2 Frenger active ceilings Frenger offers a wide range of heated and/or cooled ceiling systems for nearly all kinds of uses. Concepts Frenger active ceiling systems offer individual solutions for many types of building. This versatile system allows either heating, cooling or both systems in operation. Both types of ceiling systems contain steel tube grids, the heating component being connected to a heat source and the cooling system to a chiller unit. The pipe grids are connected together in groups. The pitch depends on the heat loss or the cooling duty. This has the advantage that there is nearly no warm air produced, thus obviating wasteful stratification.the radiant energy warms both people and objects surrounding, i.e. floors, walls and furniture resulting in an even floor to ceiling temperature without draughts. In case of cooling, the ceiling system becomes cool. It acts as in an absorbent manner, by absorbing heat from people and the surroundings area. In addition, by cooling the air close to the ceiling, this cooler air circulates within the room, thus creating a cooling effect without causing down draughts. Our History Frenger Systemen BV was founded in 1950 in the Netherlands. Today, there are two main offices, one is located in Gross-Umstadt near Frankfurt and one in Veenendaal near Anhem, the Netherlands. We employ local represantatives in many European countries. In 1950 the first heated ceiling was installed and in 1960 the first chilled ceiling, which was carried out by Frenger Systemen BV. Up to today, there are 4,3 million m 2 installed in the whole of Europe increasing every year. 3 Advantages Economic saves energy A main advantage of our ceiling systems is the saving of energy. This is based on the concept of radiant heating: it is possible to lower the air temperature up to 3K without any loss of comfort. This saves energy. By quick calculation there is saving of 6% per 1 K of lower air temperature. Prevents pollution Another advantage of this system s energy saving is preventing the pollution of the environment. Saving room space The heating or cooling system is installed at a position, where free space is available at the ceiling. You can use the whole area for other services. Walls can be used for the integration of other furniture etc. Finished Ceiling Surface The finished surface is an integral part of the system. Additional surface finishes are not necessary. Integration of light fittings It is possible to integrate many different types of lights and diffusers into the ceiling. Low maintenance and running costs The ceiling system has low service costs, because there are no working parts. Only the boiler, the circulating pump e.g. have to be maintained normally. Similar temperature profile The floor to ceiling temperature is almost constant, resulting in a comfortable environment. Higher wall and floor temperatures Radiation emitted by the ceiling reaches the walls, floor, furniture and people in the room. The walls and the floors are large places, which absorbs radiation and gets warmer. Many ailments are caused by cold walls or floors. No noise Our ceiling systems are constructed in a way that there are no moving parts and no noise is produced. Hygienic Because of minimum air movement, there is very low air circulation and hence movement of dust. This is an important matter for asthmatics. Noise absorption There is no need for additional noise absorption within the ceiling. Our systems contain noise absorption characteristics. 3

4 S-85 Paneldeck The system for high specification in terms of output and durability This heated panel ceiling provides an elegant overall active panelled design. High quality materials and the sophisticated design and construction are trademarks of this system. It is often used in gymnasiums, sport halls and swimming pools but is equally used in schools, offices, department stores, banks and showrooms. Heated Ceilings are fitted with steel panels and aluminium panels are used for chilled ceilings. This system is patented by law. Colours The visible side of the standard version is mat-white similar to RAL 9002 while the reverse has an additional protective coating. Other RAL colours are available on request Aluminium Panels are finished to RAL Lighting Frenger also offers an Integrated Lighting Package, please phone for details. Insulation Nonflammable mineralwool 25 mm thick, packed into L.D.P.E. bags prevent the egress of loose fibres. Sound insulation Frenger panelled ceilings have excellent noise absorption and reduce disturbing echoes considerably. With 15 % open area incident sound energy is allowed to pass into the ceiling cavity where it is largely absorbed by the nonflammable mineral insulation. Optional perforated panels are also available, which provide additional sound absorption. Ballproof properties Frenger panel ceilings are resistant to ball impact in accordance with DIN part 3. 6 Gipsdeck The invisible heating & cooling system This system can be designed to your individual requirements. A complete hidden environment the new gypsum ceiling by Frenger. A heated and chilled ceiling system can be provided by the use of a smooth plastered ceiling. This system has the obvious advantage of being inconspicuous while allowing sufficient space in the ceiling for luminaries and diffusers. The main construction elements are the grids with suspension units, profiles and a specially designed extrusion allowing heating or cooling to transfer to the finished plasterboard. This system creates a stable and comfortable climate in the room without air movement. 8 Cassette deck The system with high aesthetic quality This system is available in two concepts: square or linear tiles. Solidly constructed in aluminium or steel with sophisticated coffer designs and high output. These are the distinguished features of this ceiling for heating & cooling systems. It is used predominantly in administrative buildings, hospitals, libraries, stores and schools. Because of its modular construction, the system is suited to most areas and to your individual design. Integrated luminaries and ventilation diffusers can be fitted within this total ceiling concept. Colours The standard finish is RAL 9010 matt finish. All other RAL colours are available on request. Sound insulation Frenger cassette deck makes additional sound proofing of the ceiling superfluous. The special perforations and the thick layer of non-flammable mineral fibre largely absorbs incident sound (see chart). Perforation Standard perforation is in rows with hole diameter of 3 mm and a free section of about 6%. Other perforations on request. 10 Design Concepts / Worked Example Ventilation A cooled ceiling system often matches the cooling duty of the room or the complete building. But it is important that fresh air is provided for the occupants. This cannot be done by opening the windows because the conditioning systems will not operate satisfactorily in these circumstances. There are standards, like DIN 1946 which define the minimum fresh air volume per person in a room. For example 40 m 3 /hour per person (60 m 3 for smokers) for an office. The most efficient system acceptable to the users is the combination of a chilled ceiling system with a ventilation system. Usually enough output of the chilled ceiling satisfies the required cooling duty and the air exchange rate is very low, in some rooms often very close to 1 No. per hour. The same chiller may be used for cooling the air and the cold water. It is easy to integrate the ventilation system in our chilled ceiling systems, with various options available using individual designs. Controls Every cooling system has to be controlled a chilled ceiling too. First the control unit manages the room temperature. There is normally a control panel in each room or sector, where the user can change the temperature to their wishes. Usually, there is an average temperature defined and it may be changed up to +/- 2 or 3 K. If the ceiling is used as a combined chilled and heated ceiling, the control unit has to manage the change-over between heating and cooling. That means, if you would like to get the room temperature 1 degree higher, in winter time the valve must be opened (more water like every heating system) but in summertime the valve must be closed because there should not be so much cool water in the ceiling. An important factor is the Dew-point. Every chilled ceiling system has to be equipped with a dew-point-sensor which is connected with the control unit and indirectly then with the valve. This would override the room controls in order to close the valve due to unexpected circumstances. Worked Example Conditions: Cooling load: 4,800 W Room size: 60 m 2 Occupants: 3 No persons Room height: 3 m Flow/Return: 16/18 C Air temperature: 26 C Mean radiant temperature: 24 24,5 C Cooling load = 80 W/m 2 D t = 9 K Chilled Ceiling System cooling output of Gipsdeck 68 W/m 2 60m 2 x 68 W/m 2 = 4,080 W Additional Ventilation Requirements: 3 No. Occupants (1 smoker) x 60 m 3 /h = 180 m 3 /h (values stated by BSRIA) minimum air exchange rate = 1 times/hour To cover the shortfall in cooling duty (720) Watts, the following air exchange would be required: kw x 3,600 /(1,25 x 9) = 230 m 3 /h air exchange rate of 1,27 times/hour As can be seen, both rates are very low, nearly similar and not recognisable! Conventional Air-Conditioning System: To cool this room with only a conventional air conditioning system, the following exchange rate would be required: 4.8 kw x 3,600 / (1,25 x 9) = 1,536 m 3 /h therefore air exchange rate of 8,5 times/hour This air exchange rate is high and can cause down draught effects, noise, dust movement, etc, which can be harmful to certain persons (asthmatics, etc.) This worked example shows, how chilled ceiling systems are environmentally friendly. 10
