2 STRADA ACTIVE CEILINGS S trada offers a wide range of heated and/or cooled ceiling systems for nearly all k inds of uses. C O NCEPTS Strada active ceiling systems offer individual solutions h eating, cooling or both systems in operation. for many types of building. This versatile system allows either B oth types of ceiling systems contain steel tube grids, the heating component being connected to a heat source and t he cooling system to a chiller unit. T he pipe grids are connected together in groups. The pitch depends on the heat loss or the cooling duty. i n case of heating, the ceiling emits long wave radiation, which is comparable to the sun. This has the advantage that there is nearly no warm air produced, thus obviating wasteful stratification.the radiant energy warms both people and o bjects surrounding, i.e. floors, wall s and furniture resulting in an even floor to ceiling temperature without draughts. In case of cooling, the ceiling system becomes cool. it acts as in an absorbent manner, by absorbing heat from people a nd the surroundings area. in addition, by cooling the air close to the ceiling, this cooler air circulates within the room, t hus creating a cooling effect without causing down draughts. In 1950 the first heated ceiling was installed and in 1960 the first chilled ceiling, which was carried out by FRENGER S ystemen BV. Up to today, there are 4.3 million m² installed in the whol e of Europe increasing every year. 3 A STRADA ACTIVE CEILINGS D VANTAGES E conomic s aves energy A main advantage of our ceiling systems is the saving of energy. This is based on the concept of radiant heating: it is p ossible to lower the air temperature up to 3 K without any loss of comfort. T his saves energy. By quick calcul ation there is saving of 6% per 1 K of lower air temperature. P revents pollution A nother advantage of this system s energy saving is preventing the pollution of the environment. S aving room space T he heating or cooling system is installed at a posi tion, where free space is available at the ceiling. You can use the w hole area for other services. Walls can be used for the integration of other furniture etc. S imilar temperature profile T he floor to ceiling temperature is almost constant, resultin g in a comfortable environment. H igher wall and floor temperatures Radiation emitted by the ceiling reaches the walls, floor, furniture and people in the room. The walls and the floors are l arge places, which absorbs radiation and gets warmer. Many ail ments are caused by cold walls or floors. N o noise O ur ceiling systems are constructed in a way that there are no moving parts and no noise is produced H ygienic B ecause of minimum air movement, there is very low air circulation and hence movement of dust. This is an important m atter for asthmatics. N oise absorption T here is no need for additional noise absorption within the ceiling. Our systems contain noise absorption characteristics. F inished Ceiling Surface T he finished surface is an inte gral part of the system. Additional surface finishes are not necessary. I ntegration of light fittings l t is possible to integrate many different types of lights and diffusers into the ceiling. L ow maintenance and running costs T he ceiling system has low service costs, because there are no working parts. Only the boiler, the circulating pump e.g. h ave to be maintained normally.

4 T S-85 PANELDECK HE S YSTEM F OR H IGH S PECIFICATION I N T ERMS O F O UTPUT A ND DU RABILITY This heated panel ceiling provides an elegant overall active paneled design. High quality materials and the sophisticated design and construction are trademarks of this system. lt is often used in gymnasiums, sport halls and swimming pools but is equally used in schools, offices, department stores, banks and showrooms. Heated Ceilings are fitted with steel p anels and aluminium panels are used for chilled ceilings. This system is patented by law. C O LOURS: The visible side of the standard version is mat- white similar to RAL 900 while the reverse has an additional protective coating. Other RAL c olours a re available on request. Aluminium Panels are finished to RAL 9010 L I GHTING: S trada also offers an integrated Lighting Package, please phone for details. I N SULATION: N onflamm able mineralwool 5 mm thick, packed into L.D.P.E. bags prevent the egress of loose fibres. S OUND IN SULATION: Strada panelled ceilings have excellent noise absorption and reduce disturbing echoes considerably. With 15% open area incident sound energy is allowed to pass into the ceiling cavity where it is largely absorbed by the nonflammable mineral i nsulation. Optional perforated panels are also available, which provide additional sound absorption. B ALLPROOF PR OPERTIES: Strada panel ceilings are resistant to ball impact in accordance w ith DIN 1803 part 3. Certificates have been awarded by t esting authorities.

6 T GIPSDECK HE IN VISIBLE H E ATING & C OOLING SY STEM T his system can be designed to your individual r equirements. A complete hidden environment the new gypsum ceiling b y Strada. A heated and chilled ceiling system can be provided by the use of a smooth plastered ceiling. This system has the o bvious advantage of being inconspicuous while allowing suffic ient space in the ceiling for luminaries and diffusers. The main construction elements are the grids with suspension units, profiles and a specially designed extrusion allowing h eating or cooling to transfer to the finished plasterboard. T his system creat es a stable and comfortable climate in the room without air movement. T here are many variations to the finished design i t is up to you!

8 T CASSETTE DECK HE S YSTEM W ITH H IGH A ESTHETIC QU ALITY T his system is available in two concepts: square or linear tiles. S olidly constructed in aluminium or steel with sophisticated coffer designs and high output. These are the distinguished features of this ceiling for heating & cooling systems. lt is used predominantly in administrative buildings, hospitals, l ibraries, stores and schools. B ecause of its modular construction, the system is suited to most areas and to your individual design. lntegrated l uminaries and ventilation diffusers can be fitted within this total ceiling concept. C O LOURS: T he standard finish is S OUND IN SULATION: RAL 9010 matt finish. All other RAL colours are available on request. S trada cassette deck makes additional sound proofing of the ceiling superfluous. The special perfo rations and the thick layer of non- f lammable mineral fibre largely absorbs incident sound (see chart). P E RFORATION: S tandard perforation is in rows with hole diameter of 3 mm and a free sec tion of about 6%. Other perforations on request. Proven Design: Square tiles (600 x 600) have been used in Hospitals I Universities etc for 30+ years in the U.K. The l inear strip is an evolved concept.

10 D STRADA ACTIVE CEILINGS ESIGN C O NCEPTS / W ORKED EX AMPLE V E NTILATION: A cooled ceiling system often matches the cooling duty of the room or the complete building. But it i s important that fresh air is provided for the occupants. This cannot be done by opening the windows - b ecause the conditioning systems will not operate satisfactorily in these circumstances. T here are standards, like DIN 1946 which define the minimum fresh air volume per person in a room. For example 40 m³/hour per person (60 m³/hour for smokers) for an of fice. The most efficient system acceptable to the users is the combination of a chilled ceiling system with a ventilation system. Usually enough output of the chilled ceiling satisfies the required cooling duty and the air exchange rate is very low, in s o me rooms often very close to 1 No. per hour. T he same chiller may be used for cooling the air and the cold water. i t is easy to integrate the ventilation system in our chilled ceiling systems, with various options available using individual d esigns. C O NTROLS: E very cooling system has to be controlled a chilled ceiling too. First the control unit manages the room temperature. There is normally a control panel in each room or sector, where the u ser can change the temperature to their wishes. Usually, there is an average temperature defined and it may be changed up to +/ - or 3 K. If the ceiling is used as a combined chilled and heated ceiling, the control unit has to manage the change- over between h eating and cooling. That means, if you would like to get the room temperature 1 degree higher, in winter time the valve must be opened (more water like every heating system) but in summertime the valve must be closed because there s hould not be so much cool water in the ceiling. An important factor is the Dew-point. Every chilled ceiling system has to be equipped with a dew-point- sensor which is connected with the control unit and indirectly then with the valve. This would override the room controls in order to close t he valve due to unexpected circumstances. 11 W STRADA ACTIVE CEILINGS ORKED EX AMPLE A dditional Ventilation Requirements: 3 No. Occupants (1 smoker) x 60 m³/h = 180 m³/h ( values stated by BSR1A) m inimum air exchange rate = 1 times/hour T o cover the shortfall in cooling duty (70) Watts, the foll owing air exchange would be required: 0.70 kw x 3,600 /(1.5 x 9) = 30 m³/h air exchange rate of 1.7 times/hour A s can be seen, both rates are very low, nearly similar and not recognisable! Conventional Air- C onditioning System: T o cool this room with only a conventional air conditioning system, the following exchange rate would be required: 4.8 kw x 3,600 / (1.5 x 9) = 1,536 m³/h therefore air exchange rate of 8.5 times/hour T his air exchange rate is high and can cause down draught effects, noise. dust etc. which can be harmful to certain p ersons (asthmatics. etc.) T his worked example shows, how chilled ceiling systems are environmentally friendly. S ummary: L ow air movement An internal temperature of 4-6 C is a satisfactor y summer design condition C onventional air conditioning systems usually require large fans, terminal equipment, pumps, filters, etc. All of w hich consume peak rate electricity with attendant capital and running cost penalties.
