2 Part 1b: Design Parameters 1) The car must be powered by one or two Victor brand mousetraps (1 ¾ x 7/8 ). Other brands may be used by they must be of the defined size. (No Rat traps) 2) Cars should be primarily made out of objects found around the house. Apart from the mousetrap, no materials need to be purchased. 3) The mousetrap cannot be physically altered except for the following: 4 holes can be drilled only to mount the mousetrap to the frame and the locking mechanism can be removed. 4) By definition, a vehicle is a device with wheels or runners used to carry something. Therefore, launching a ball from the mousetrap will be ruled illegal. 5) Vehicles must be self-starting. Vehicles may not receive a push in the forward direction or side direction. 6) The vehicle must steer itself. 7) Distance will be measured from the front of the starting line where the front of the car will line up on to the front of the car after it has stopped. 8) Racers cannot receive a running start. 9) The racing officials (Mrs. Rooney and Mr. Dalzell) have the final decision as to the appropriateness of any additional items that might be used in the construction of the car. Please check before adding. Part 2: Research (1 page) A) Research at least 3 distinctly different mousetrap car designs (at a quick glance, the designs are different enough to notice). B) For each of the three designs: Provide a picture and a one-sentence caption describing the design. List (in bullet points or complete sentences) three Pros and three Cons of the design. C) Below your three designs, determine which design will be your base design. Your base design is the starting point of your design or the one most similar to your design. State in 1 brief paragraph (4-5 sentences) why you chose this design.
3 Part 3: Design and Design Calculations (1 page) A) First, provide a list of materials (bullet points) used in the construction of YOUR mousetrap. B) Measure the Wheel and Axle diameters in centimeters. Round to the nearest tenth of a centimeter (millimeter). C) Calculate the Ideal Mechanical Advantage of the Wheel and Axle you are using. Show the initial formula/equation used (with descriptions), the formula/equation with your wheel and axle measurements in it, and finally the Ideal Mechanical Advantage (rounded to nearest hundredth). D) Calculate the Ideal Force Output. Show the initial formula/equation used (with descriptions), the formula/equation with your calculated values included, and finally the Ideal Force Output. E) Calculate the Ideal Distance traveled while force is being applied. This is based on the length of string and circumferences of your wheel and axle. Show the initial formula/equation used (with descriptions), the formula/equation with your calculated values included, and finally the Ideal Distance while force is applied. F) Describe in 1 brief paragraph (4-5 sentences) why using a simple machine (wheel and axle) with a Mechanical Advantage greater than 1 is important for the Mousetrap car to travel larger distances. Hint: include friction and traction. Example of what is expected for C, D, and E: Let IMA = Ideal Mechanical Advantage (diameter of wheel) IMA= (diameter of axle) =(15.6cm) (1.5cm) =10.4
4 Part 4: Pre-Test and Analysis (1 page, use this page) For the Trials, pick one distance in meters (therefore, the distance column should be the same for all three trials). Measure out the distance and mark your start and end lines. Time how long it takes your car to travel the distance (to the nearest hundredth of a second). Note: any computer with internet access or any smartphone can work as a stopwatch. Calculate the average speed (round to nearest hundredth of m/s) for each trial. Once all trials are finished, Calculate the Mean Average Speed of the three trial average speeds (round to nearest hundredth of m/s). Based on the Mean Average Speed, calculate how much time your car will take to travel 2 meters. This is your Expected Time based on Mean Average Speed. Trial 1 Distance (m) Time (s) Average Speed (m/s) Trial 2 Trial 3 Mean Average Speed (m/s) Expected Time based on Mean Average Speed (s) Give example calculations for: Average Speed, Mean Average Speed, and Expected Time below.
5 Part 5: Extra Credit (optional) To earn the extra credit, you must draw on graph paper three scale drawings of your car. It should include a Top, a Side, and a Front view. It can be in either Customary or Metric units. It must include three accurate and neat drawings on graph paper (use a ruler), the measurements, and a scale (the same scale must be used for all drawings. The drawings must be accurate so that a person can recreate the car based solely on the drawings and materials list. Graph paper can be found here: If you need a refresher on how to draw Top, Side, and Front scale drawings, look here: or try googling or finding on youtube another resource. Part 6: Final Thoughts and Advice In your Packet, you must have: Page 1: Part 1- Rubric (use attached page) Page 2: Part 2- Research (your own page, typed) Page 3: Part 3- Design and Design Calculations (your own page, typed. Formulas and calculations can be neatly written instead) Page 4: Part 4- Pretest and Analysis (use attached page) Pages 5-7: Extra Credit scale drawings (optional) Leave room for error. Your design may not work exactly the way you want to begin with. Try changing one thing around at a time and see how that affects the outcome. And finally, some inspiration from Thomas Edison: Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up. - Thomas A. Edison
