10 Solid Waste Education and Enforcement Program SWEEP DPW is in charge of enforcing all sanitation regulations for the District. Education and enforcement are the tools that SWEEP inspectors and investigators use to work with residents and businesses to keep the District clean. 12 What can we do? Rethink: Take responsibility. Consider your Environmental Footprint! Reduce: Consciously manage your habits so that you waste fewer resources and less energy. You will generate less pollution, less trash, and find you save more money! Reuse: Find new ways of using objects and materials which have fulfilled their primary functions. Be creative! Recycle: Recycling requires special equipment and energy expenditure to sort materials, break them down, and remanufacture them, but it sure beats burning or burying materials!!!

16 Materials Required by Law The following items must be recycled. Paper (newspaper, office paper etc.) Paperboard Corrugated Cardboard Plastic* Aluminum Cans Steel Tin Glass (green, clear and brown) *narrow necked plastic bottles Ps all the other recyclables are ok such as Rigid Containers, wide-mouth containers etc.

36 * *Suggest they can sort recyclables for higher value. (With single stream recycling this option may not be available). *Sort recyclables the first time they are handled. *The majority of waste collected for disposal is recyclable. *Sort recyclables at first point of contact (for example, collect cardboard boxes for recycling as soon as they are unpacked). *Locate recycling containers in or near work areas where recyclables are generated.

37 Container Options for Office and Desk Recycling Several types of containers are suitable for small places and ideal for use in offices. Some are designed to fit small spaces such as: A small box on the desk Recycling/trash containers under the desk Inside the kitchen area By the copy machine or printer Containers for Common Areas These or 96-gallon carts work well both inside and outside buildings. Many recyclers are able to pick up recyclables directly from these automated collection carts.
