2 Why Recycle? The average American generates 4.4 pounds of trash per day, adding to the grand total of about 251 million tons of trash the United States accumulates per year. American communities recycled and composted nearly 35% of municipal solid waste in 2012, diverting 87 million tons to recovery according to the U.S. EPA. Top 5 Reasons to Recycle Conserves natural resources. Recycling conserves natural resources such as trees, water and minerals preserving the environment for future generations. Reduces the need for landfills. Recycling reduces the need for landfills and incinerators because when materials are recycled, less waste is sent to disposal facilities. Prevents pollution. 3 PLASTIC BOTTLES Did you know Over 1/3 of all carpeting made in the U.S. is from bottles. It takes 35 PET bottles to make one square yard of carpet. 5 GLASS BOTTLES Glass Bottles are 100% recyclable A Bottle can be recycled over and over again. Did You Know Recycling one Glass bottle saves enough energy to light a hundred watt bulb for 4 hours, or power a computer for 30 minutes Source Glass Packaging Institute In 2012, 41% of beer and soft drink bottles were recovered for recycling, according to the U.S. EPA. Another 34% of wine and liquor bottles and 15% of food and other glass jars were recycled. In total, 34.1% of all glass containers were recycled, equivalent to taking 210,000 cars off the road each year. 8 Bloomsburg Recycling has bins for the drop off of the following paper products Paperrecycles.org --- reports that the amount of paper & paperboard recovered in the US increased 76% between 1990 and 2012 Office Paper- general writing or copy paper Corrugated Cardboard boxes that have a fluted inner lining Magazines includes brochures and all glossy paper Mixed paper- items such as junk mail, paste board boxes, phone & paperback books was added to Bloomsburg s program in Newspaper Hard cover Books have been accepted since 2002 What does paper become? Recovered paper is made into new products, such as boxes, paper bags, newsprint, printing &tablet paper, tissue & towel products, paperboard packaging and specialty products such as ceiling tiles and insulation.
