4 History of Robovent 22 Years of Excellence 2008 was one for the textbooks. The economy was in shambles and most industries were teetering on the brink. Yet John and Jim Reid, partners in RoboVent were not deterred. They had devised a plan and were determined to weather the storm by expanding their business. It seems counterintuitive perhaps, but true nonetheless that entrepreneurs often see opportunity where others see turmoil. But could they succeed in spite of the dire business climate? You only have to look back to the beginning for the answer. RoboVent started in 1989 as Great Lakes Air Systems, a local distributor of dust collectors. Business was steady but it soon became apparent that there were more opportunities for a better dust collection system. So the idea was hatched in 1994 and by 1997 Great Lakes Air Systems began manufacturing its own brand of collectors. Soon after, an in-house engineering department was created and became an integral part of our growth strategy and the rest, as they say, is history. In 1996 Great Lakes had developed a breakthrough technology for fire suppression in weld cells. It was followed by a succession of new products. And an interesting thing began to happen. Due to the success of our branded dust collection systems, customers began referring to Great Lakes as RoboVent. And so in 2007 Great Lakes changed its name to RoboVent. From its humble beginning as a distributor of dust collectors, the company grew because it constantly asked, what else can we do for our customers to make their business better? But even with RoboVent s expertise in dust collectors, and especially because we were a small business, we looked at difficult situations not as problems, but rather as challenges to be conquered. Back then our livelihood literally depended on it. Today, more than 22 years and 70 employees later, RoboVent has become a design, engineering and manufacturing company providing a range of products used in process systems at manufacturing facilities. 6 Dust Collection Applications RoboVent FlexMount dust collection equipment has been successfully applied to hundreds of applications covering a variety of industries and processes besides welding fumes and metal cutting operations. Fiberglass Fiberglass and Fiber Reinforced Plastic dust typically contain fibers that tend to cause bridging between filters in horizontal cartridge collectors. The vertical filter design of the RoboVent FlexMount Series collectors works well in these applications, resulting in longer filter life, and lower maintenance costs. RoboVent offers specialized filter medias to best aid in proper discharge of fiberglass strands and dust from the cartridges. Wood Dust Many wood dust applications involve the collection of stringy material that can cause bridging between filters in horizontal cartridge collectors. The vertical filter design of the RoboVent FlexMount Series collectors along with the PowerFlex pulsing system works particularly well in high-loading applications, achieving longer filter life and lower maintenance costs. We offer specialized filter medias to ensure proper discharge of wood dust and shavings from the cartridges. Pharmaceutical & Chemical The RoboVent FlexMount Series collectors can be used on a variety of pharmaceutical dust applications. Applications include blending, granulation, conveyance, coating, tablet presses, fertilizers, pesticides and paint pigments. Safe change-out containment systems are available for hazardous materials. Metalizing Metalizing often presents a particularly tough application. The FlexMount Series collectors have successfully been applied to these processes with extremely high loading levels. The PowerFlex self-cleaning system has multiple parameters that can be adjusted to deliver optimum performance in these applications. With more than 20 years of experience, we can provide a safer, better solution. Abrasive Blasting Abrasive blasting applications range from wheel blasters and air blasters to cabinet blasters. Because each utilizes a variety of abrasive blasting medias including sand, garnet, steel, plastic and shot each application must be reviewed before an equipment recommendation can be made. Special consideration is required for silica sand and aluminum blasting, and we have a range of products suitable for these applications. Paper Dust The vertical filter design and the PowerFlex pulsing system in the RoboVent FlexMount Series collectors works well in applications such as shredded paper scrap where fibers and strands tend to cause bridging. Filter Removal System. Our Dust Collectors feature a slide-out filter changing mechanism that makes replacing filters fast and simple. The filters are specially designed with square plates on top and have closed ends with a heavy-duty gasket for sealing it from the dirty-air and clean-air sides. The Slide-Out mechanism has two handles to release the filter. With a simple pull, the entire rack unclamps and releases the filter for a quick replacement. The PowerFlex self-cleaning system uses compressed air to backpulse the filter cartridges via high performance nozzles. 9 Robovent s downflow Design vs. competitors The biggest loss of filter life in any dust collector is due to re-entrainment. Re-entrainment is the term used for picking up dust that has already been removed from the filter and re-depositing it on the filter. In fact, experts believe that filter life could be extended almost indefinitely if re-entrainment could be eliminated. The Air Filtration Process 1. Airflow from process Clean air returned to your plant via built-in silencer. 5 With DownFlow technology, air is delivered evenly and without turbulence from the top. The general movement of the air within the cabinet is downward the same direction as the falling dust that has been removed by the pulsing system. While this design makes the equipment especially difficult to build, the results are well worth the effort. 2. Air forced downward through filters, which collect debris. 10 Flexmount dust collector Key ROBOVENT features: Powerflex Pulsing System (Standard) The FlexMount Series equipment utilizes the state-of-the-art PowerFlex System, an extremely efficient self-cleaning system that delivers consistent pulsing pressure across the entire filter. epad Control Board (Standard) The RoboVent epad Controller is a touch screen panel that allows control of all aspects of the system including the blower, filter differential pressure and PowerFlex System. It provides constant monitoring with in-plant systems, it tracks maintenance history and includes a built-in diagnostic feature. The epad monitors differential pressure and system safety functions, giving you a digital readout for simplicity and versatility. This system allows for a much more efficient installation since all controls may be prewired in the equipment. E-Drive Auto VFD (Optional) The E-Drive system uses a sensor to constantly monitor the airflow, and then using a VFD, it automatically adjusts the RPM of the motor to compensate for filter loading. Energy peaks and valleys are evened out, energy usage is cut by 20% to 30% and filter life is extended as much as 30%. The result is a system that is quieter and can operate at maximum efficiency to save money. Autosaver Auto On/Off (Optional) The AutoSaver feature instructs the RoboVent air filtration system to rest when it s not needed to save on energy costs. It mounts in the control panel and senses power usage or a control feed from your process. AutoSaver turns the system on when the process starts and turns it off if it s idle for 5 minutes. The epad XE features a larger, full-color touch screen with even more options than the standard epad model. One important feature of the epadxe is the remote login access for quicker, more convenient troubleshooting. If issues arise, especially during third shift or off-hours when service is at a premium, a Robovent technicians can access, diagnose and fix a problem to help you avert a major disruption in production. The epad XE also has the capability of controlling the edrive from the touchscreen. This offers easy access to ramp up or power down motors to allow for improved airflow from the dust collector. Safesensor Particulate Monitoring Device (Standard) The SafeSensor particulate monitoring device detects a leak past the filters. If a leak occurs, the system shuts the equipment down and sets off an alarm to help keep a workforce safe. Supprex-200 Fire Suppression System (Optional) The Supprex-200 is a dual stage system activated by either smoke or heat. When smoke is detected a dampening system is activated. If heat is detected, FM-200 gas is released to extinguish the fire. With the Supprex-200 System there is little cleanup should a fire occur. The Supprex-200 fire suppression system is engineered to exacting standards to ensure safety and effectiveness. Sparkout Spark Arrestor (Optional) If your manufacturing process produces sparks, the RoboVent SparkOut system is the answer. The advanced design of the SparkOut System is the result of years of extensive field-testing under heavy manufacturing conditions. 13 Endurex W13 Pre-Conditioning Process Pre-coating filters to improve performance has been a fairly basic procedure until now. RoboVent s engineers have developed a highly controlled approach to create a super filter. By designing a precisely monitored process, the pre-conditioning stage embeds microscopic particles to improve a filter s efficiency while avoiding a build-up of filter particles that cannot be removed through pulse cleaning. These pre-conditioned filters are a unique and powerful example of RoboVent s industry-leading designs, and drive to produce fresh, clean air. TESTING ENSURES THE PRE-CONDITIONING PROCESS Pre-conditioning a filter is one thing testing each filter batch to make sure it meets the highest quality standard is something else entirely. But that s exactly what RoboVent does. By utilizing a particle monitor to measure microscopic pre-coat particles that may pass through a filter, graphs are plotted to provide an objective, data-driven evaluation. Filters that don t meet the standard are rejected. This critical step provides RoboVent customers of the finest quality filters and of cleaner air. Proven Cabinet Design If you want to be sure that filter cabinets are leak-proof, then 100% welded construction is mandatory. And that s exactly what RoboVent does. The epad XE control panel is a full color touch screen that puts all the major functions of the ventilation system at your fingertips, including the PowerFlex Pulsing System. The epad also tells you when filters need to be changed and for safety it shuts down a unit if smoke is detected or particulate gets past the filters. The edrive system uses a sensor to continually monitor airflow through the unit, and then using a VFD, automatically adjusts the RPM of the motor to compensate for filter loading. All control systems are thoroughly tested before and after installation following a specific quality control checklist. Furthermore, every unit is powered up and tested on the factory floor to ensure that each is fully operational. Quality Assurance How can RoboVent guarantee quality? By following a strict quality control procedure including a Black Light Test for all cabinets and filters. A special florescent powder is dispersed into the equipment while the blower is operating. Then a Quality Control Technician examines the cabinet thoroughly to verify there are no leaks in the system. Should a cabinet show any potential for problems, it is returned to production. Each filter is also subjected to this rigorous testing to be certain that each can be seated properly and that the gasket seals the filter completely from the clean side to the dirty side. This design ensures cost-effective removal of contaminants that will help you meet federal regulations on emissions. The hood design is endorsed by the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) and is widely accepted as the correct way to address manual welding ventilation. 15 Overhead hooded systems RoboVent s Flexan Hood Stations are used in facilities where medium to large sized parts are manufactured. The hood is positioned over the weld area and is ducted to a main collector. RoboVent can provide either curtain or solid walls using the Flexan Enclosure System. Light can pass into the enclosure through the clear top making it easy to see without installing costly lighting fixtures. The modular design of the Flexan Hood allows for quick changes and all parts are reusable. The system uses Quick Clamp Ducting for easy moves and changes. weldpro xt booths The WeldPro XT Series Air Cleaner is a compact system that recycles contaminated air using a high efficiency, self-cleaning filter system. The unique design provides clean air, a clean plant and cost-effective removal of contaminants that will help enable you to meet federal regulations on emissions. In many applications the WeldPro XT can be extended to become a Dual Station by adding a second workbench module, either side-to-side or back-to-back. 16 MANUAL WELDING (Source capture) RoboVent PowerPro The RoboVent PowerPro is a self-contained unit that allows the CrossFlow hood to be placed wherever it s needed in a work area. It can be ducted or used as stand-alone unit and located virtually anywhere in the work area without restricting overhead cranes. It s an excellent solution for cleaning the air while maintaining plant flexibility. 17 Robovent Fumearms FumeArms are a versatile and simple solution for capturing smoke and fumes from welding and other industrial processes. The FumeArms are available in 6" and 8" diameters and are designed to move easily into position to extract smoke and contaminated air from a worker s breathing zone. Unlike many competitive brands, RoboVent FumeArms are designed for industrial applications. They are durable, robust and virtually maintenance free. All joints are on the outside of the arm, not in the dirty air stream. All metal surfaces are powder-coated to protect from scratches. RoboVent FumeArms are self-supporting with smooth, low-friction control, and require minimal maintenance. FlexPro Hi-Vac System The RoboVent FlexPro hi-vac smoke collection system is a versatile and simple solution for welding smoke extraction. The FlexPro can be connected to any welding gun that is outfitted with tip extraction. The system captures the fumes right at the source of generation by high powered suction at the weld gun tip. High Pressure extraction is provided to the guns by the FlexPro Power Plant, a very high powered filtration unit that is the heart of the system. The smoke and fumes are filtered from the air stream, and clean air is returned to the plant. RoboVent Extension Booms are designed to extend the reach of the RoboVent FumeArms providing up to a 35-foot radius of combined coverage. The Extension Booms are heavy-duty, welded construction with a durable powder-coat finish. All Booms include a bracket for securing the Boom to a wall or post and a heavy-duty flange to attach the FumeArm. They are available in 6", 8" or 10" diameter. 28 weld fume regulation Hexavalent Chromium Regulations If your operations involve welding on Stainless Steel or metals containing chrome alloys, you need to be aware of the laws that came into effect in May Under the OSHA Hexavalent Chromium Standard [Chromium (VI) App A], engineering controls were required to be implemented no later than May 31, 2010 to reduce the permissible exposure limit (PEL) for hexavalent chromium to less than 5 micrograms per cubic meter measured as an 8-hour time-weighted average. This applied to all employers, regardless of size. Companies with 20 or more employees were to have completed their base-line exposure testing by November 27, Those with 19 or fewer employees had until May 30, 2007 to conduct testing. May 31, 2010 was established as the date for all companies to implement Engineered Controls for the removal of CRVI fumes. Manganese Regulations Manganese is a trace element found in the emissions of virtually all types of welding. OSHA s current PEL (Permissible Exposure Limit) stands at 5 milligrams per cubic meter for manganese, and is classified as a ceiling measurement ( 5 mg/m3 (c)). This means that an employee can at no time during his/her workday be exposed to respirable manganese fume in quantities greater than 5 mg/m3. This information can be found through the U. S. Department of Labor s web site.( Table Z-1 Limits for Air Contaminants, listed as Manganese fume (Mn) Case No ). However, the ACGIH (American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists), a highly respected independent board that is not part of OSHA or the government, has recently tabled a motion to lower their recommended TLV-TWA (Threshold Limit Value-Time Weighted Average) to 20 micrograms or milligrams per cubic meter. Plainly stated, ACGIH s potential new exposure limit would be 250 times lower than the current OSHA Limit. Justification for the updated exposure limit is based on recent data that suggests that exposure to Manganese can cause a condition called Manganism, similar to Parkinson s disease. In extreme cases, overexposure to Manganese fumes can affect the central nervous system and change neuropsychological and neurobehavioral function. It is widely expected that ACGIH will adopt new, lower limits, and that OSHA will follow the ACGIH recommendation at some point in the future, raising the bar considerably for weld fume control systems. 40 Ovens CONVECTION OVENS. These rugged curing ovens are available in standard sizes but can be engineered to virtually any size requirement. The ovens are constructed of heavy-duty, double-wall, insulated tongue and groove panels. These direct-fired ovens quickly bring the cabin to temperature and maintain it with a 90/10 recirculation. Various airflow configurations are available and monorail systems can easily be integrated to boost material throughput and productivity. INFRARED OVENS. 41 wash booths and wash lines Parts Washers. Multi-Stage Washers are used to clean the surfaces of products before they re powder or liquid coated. The number of stages used in the washing process is customized to each customers specifications and the complexity of the parts. 42 blasting booths & equipment Blasting Booths. The 2000 Series Blast Booths are designed to provide an ideal operating environment for media blast operations. RoboVent s blasting booths are equipped with premier media recovery, handling and filtration systems to provide a safe and efficient operation. Air Intakes The air intakes for the Blast Booths are on the side of the booth and off the ground, thereby saving floor space and decreasing the door weight since many other intakes are on the doors. Lexan Light Covers RoboVent provides replaceable Lexan covers for light fixtures to protect the lens from the blast grit. Product Doors The product doors to a Blast Booth are single-skinned and made of heavy-duty 12-gauge material with a 2" x 3" tubular frame. 43 Quick-Clamp Ductwork RoboVent uses special Quick-Clamp ductwork for easy installation. Quick-Clamp provides exceptional airflow for lower static pressures on the collector and easily captures fine blasting dust. Dust Collector The Dust Collectors used are RoboVent s advanced collection units, fitted with the epad controls. Collectors include the Power- Flex pulsing system and Endurex filter media. Dust collector comes pre-assembled and ready to go. Just connect the power and compressed air supplies. Heavy Duty Structure RoboVent blast booths are made of 1/8" thick, 3"x 6" tubing that is covered with a special 16-gauge sleeve that acts as a lip to the Panels to rest in when they are clipped together. With a couple slight modifications, RoboVent can strengthen the structure to allow for overhead cranes to be mounted in the booth. Exhaust Plenums RoboVent has designed exhaust plenums with interlocking baffle plates so that if grit was shot directly at the intake, it could not get into the collector and harm the filter media.
