About the October Meeting October 10, :00 P.M. University of Washington Center for Urban Horticulture 3501 NE 41st Street Seattle, WA Norito Hasegawa: What's New in Paphiopedalum Breeding His interest lies mainly in the hybridization of Paphiopedilums and also the propagation of the Paphiopedilum species. He is an accredited AOS Judge with cross qualifications as a CSA (Cymbidium Society of America) Judge. He is also a former trustee of The American Orchid Society and has served on the Board of Directors of the Orchid Digest Corporation. He travels internationally to keep orchid fanatics up to date on Paphiopedilum happenings. Norito will also be bringing plants to sell. Norito Hasegawa is the owner of Paphanatics Unlimited which is located in Santa Ana, California. Paphanatics has been specializing in Paphiopedilums since Norito has been collecting, growing and studying orchids for over 30 years, and is now a retired dentist. Those years of involvement have been at many levels; as a hobbyist, author and commercial grower.

He will not be at the Oct. 10th meeting but Chris, Pat or Peter can take your checks or cash. Or you can send payment in the mail using our mail box address. Mike will be making the NWOS Membership Directory in early November so this is the FINAL CALL FOR DUES. Dues are $25 for one person or $30 for two people at the same address. Members who joined at or after the Flower & Garden Show in February are paid through June Dues are kept low to encourage membership but they cover only a small portion of the society's expenses. NWOS Annual Fall Sale: Nov. 5 and 6 at Swanson's Nursery Mark your calendars and tell your orchid-loving friends about the Northwest Orchid Society s annual fall sale on Nov. 5 and 6 at Swanson's Nursery in Ballard ( th Ave. NW, Seattle, WA 98117). Doors will open both days at 9 am. The sale will close at 6 pm on Saturday and at 4 pm on Sunday. The NWOS sale will be in the north glass house. Volunteers are needed to help cashier and bag on both days (sign up sheets will be at the October meeting) or or phone Kathy Murray (kandmmurray@frontier.com, ) or Leanna Fox (l_fox@comcast.net, ). And your blooming orchids will be needed for the display table. Either bring these to Swanson s on Friday afternoon or contact George Grantham to drop them off at his house in Shoreline (georgegrantham@hotmail.com). Mike Cory will give a talk on orchids at 10 am on Saturday and there will be potting demonstrations at various times on both days. Vendors will include Emerald City Orchids, Seattle Orchid.com, Sorella Orchids and possibly Hatfield Orchids, a California cymbidium specialist. There will also be a NWOS member sales table. If you want to sell on that table, be sure to fill out the seller s sheet with information about how your tag is marked, to whom the check should be payable, and your mailing address. Please be sure to have double tags (one removable with the price and your identifying information) to assure that you are paid. If you re unfamiliar with Swanson's, it is a large nursery with indoor and outdoor sales areas. There is even a café that serves breakfast and lunch (hours: 9 to 4 daily). For more information about Swanson's including a map click here.
3 The Conservatory at Volunteer Park Click on the interesting 4 minute video below about the Conservatory at Volunteer park. There is a large collection of orchids there and a constant show of orchid plants. NWOS members can become better informed about the Conservatory by taking a few minutes to watch this video. Save the Conservatory at Volunteer Park! A video introduction to Volunteer Park Conservatory, a 100-year old Victorian-style Greenhouse located in Seattle, Washington. It includes interviews with senior gardener David Helgeson, former senior gardener Stephanie Johnson-Toliver, architect Audrey Van Horne and community member and patron Trudy Stack. Also covered are some of the challenges facing the Conservatory in her second century. Orchid Donations to Benefit the NWOS Scholarship Fund Michael Corn has donated a number of orchids to the NWOS to be sold to benefit the society s scholarship fund. Most need repotting and will be priced from $3 to $10. There is a nice variety of orchids, including several large Stanhopeas (slightly more expensive). Kathy Murray will bring these plants to the October meeting and will handle the sales. See her since these plants will not be on the Society s plant sale table. Cash and checks accepted. Bob Gordon Orchid Books Available Between 1986 and 1994, Bob Gordon wrote five orchid books, concentrating on phalaenopsis. He traveled the US, Canada, England and Australia doing speaking tours until He passed away in September of 2011, leaving behind a vast legacy of knowledge. His son, Rob Gordon, has a number of books that he'd like to put into growers' hands. He is contacting AOS chapters throughout the US offering his books at deeply discounted prices. His website prices from 2008 were: Beginner in 2008 $10, now $5 Culture in 2008 $20, now $10 Seedling in 2008 $18, now $10 Survey in 2008 $25, now $15 Writing in 2008 $3.50, now $2 Shipping charges will be the actual shipping via your choice UPS Ground or USPS Priority. If you have questions or would like to order some books, please Rob at rgordon93@sbcglobal.net. He ll need some lead time to fill the orders, but will attempt to get the books out within four weeks of order.

5 Report from the September Meeting Mike finds spider mites on Leanna's plant. The Douglas classroom was filled with interested members and guests. The Sept 12 th meeting was held in the Douglas Classroom at the Center for Urban Horticulture. It was our annual Orchid Culture Clinic. Mike Foster stood in front taking a first look at the plants that each member had brought in. Andy, Jamie, Mike C., George G., George K., Kathy, Peter, Joff and other veteran members helped with identifying problems and offering solutions. It was very informative and gave new members as well as experienced growers some new insights into how to grow better plants. Oftentimes, several solutions were given for any particular topic. Therefore when we go back to our own collections we could choose for ourselves what would work best from a number of options. Sometimes we find out that our plants aren't as bad as we thought There was a nice showing at the Orchid Table. We didn't formally review the table but the members were able to see the plants during breaks. The growers were on hand to answer any questions. Here is a sampling of what was on the Orchid Table at the September Meeting. George Krasle brought a large selection
