2 PALO ALTO UNIFIED SCHOLL DISTRICT (PAUSD) SCHOOL SITES F. PALO ALTO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT (PAUSD)-SCHOOL SITES School Maintenance Program Policy All contract personnel shall be finger printed prior to working in a P.A.U.S.D. School site. Check in at the office prior to performing maintenance if required by the school. Utilize only restrooms designated for adults. Check with the office if unsure. Herbicide use is not permitted! Moving vehicles and equipment in Elementary Schools must halt once children are present. If a vehicle must move, it needs to be accompanied by a staff person walking along the side of it for security purposes. Irrigation inspections must be performed on non-physical education days. The grass is to remain dry on these days. This also means no automatic watering the night before if possible. During the weeks of Star Testing, noise is not permitted! Mowing needs to be completed before and after school hours. Typical activities that must be scheduled around include: Times are approximate, Children traveling to school (8-8:25am), Morning recess (10-10:20am) lunch (11:30am - 12:50pm alternating grades), Children departing from school Monday Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday (2:45pm). Wednesday has an early departure (1:30 pm). Each school also has Physical Education classes that must be scheduled around. The days and times for each school vary and are provided at the beginning of the school year. General Maintenance Hazards must be reported immediately unless rectified at the time of discovery. Daily litter removal and emptying trash cans around the turf areas. Monthly turf edging is required. Weed control utilizing string trimmers and garden hoes, No Herbicides Allowed. Weeds along fence lines, pathways, play equipment and ball diamonds must be controlled monthly. Gopher control must be completed before 7:30 am whenever gopher activity is present in or adjacent to turf areas. Traps cannot be left unattended and must also be removed by 7:30 am.
3 Only electric blowers are to be used to clean hardscaped areas on a weekly basis. Leaves and grass clippings are to be removed upon accumulation on the turf as required by the City. The turf must be mowed in accordance with the Schedule developed by the City for the School district. The turf areas must be mowed in a timely manner as to not interfere with the use of the lawn area by the students and to minimize the amount of noise to the least amount possible. Aeration to a depth of 4inches utilizing solid tines must be done 3x annually. (May, August prior to the start of the new school year, and again in November) This process must be scheduled so it does not interfere with school activities, School sites must be fertilized 3x annually at a rate 300lbs. per acre utilizing Earthworks organic granular slow release fertilizerall hard surfaces must be clean after a fertilizer application before leaving the site. School sites must be over-seeded and mulched with nitrified sawdust during the December Holiday period. A blue/rye blend of 20/80 must be used at a rate of 5 lbs /1000 sq. ft. The Elementary sites are again seeded/mulched during the summer months between the middle of June and the end of August. Hybrid Bermuda seed for sport fields is used during this application at a rate of 1 lb. /1000 sq. ft. Low spots and pot holes are again filled prior to this procedure. Some tree maintenance is required if branches interfere with the use of the field or present a safety hazard. They must also be raised if they interfere with the efficiency of the sprinkler system. Pruning is required 3x annually for landscape along fences or growing through fencing onto the turf areas. This includes fencing that contains ivy. Turf areas are to remain free of pot holes, bumpy or rough playing surfaces and low areas where water might accumulate. Soil must be added to level these areas as often as needed. Softball Field Maintenance The softball fields should be groomed weekly with equipment that can scarify the baseball cinder and remove high areas and fill low spots on the playing surface (an Infield Baseball Groomer is recommended).the playing surface should be watered to soften the material before roughing up the cinder to a depth of two three inches. The bases, home plate and pitching rubber should be installed at proper distances and to the specifications required for field use. Extra base anchors should be made and used for replacement should a base anchor need replacing. The batter s boxes should be packed with a 4inch layer of clay with approximately two inches of cinder on top, The infield turf area has to be edged monthly. The baseball cinder is to remain free of weeds and grasses. Each February when school is not in session, the softball diamonds at JLS, Jordan, and Terman must be renovated. This includes rototilling the entire cinder diamond while blending in at a
4 minimum of 25 tons of Baseball infield cinder from TMT on each field. Mark all bases, sprinklers, quick couplers, and other obstacles prior to work. You will be responsible for replacing damaged items. The field must be floated level and the pitching mounds (if present) must be restored. All bases should be level and at appropriate distances depending on scheduled use. The infield turf edge must be level with the cinder edge. Any humps, bumps or lips along the turf edge must be restored to level with the playing surface. School Field Closures The soccer fields at JLS, Jordan, and Terman are closed each year according to a field closure program. They remain closed for approximately three months. The remaining Elementary sites are not closed, but are seeded and top dressed (pot holes and low spots) again during the summer at the rates listed in the School Maintenance Section. This must be completed prior to the beginning of the school year at the end of August. During the renovation, the fields must be fenced closed and signed Fields Closed. The turf is first aerated to a depth of 5-6 inches then bare areas must be rototilled and leveled. A minimum of 50 tons of topdressing material (sometimes more, exact amount to be decided by the City) is applied.the topdress material should only be T mix from TMT or equivalent used by City. Sand should not be used for topdressing sports fields.this material is used to fill the aerated holes and level pot holes, low areas, and rough playing surfaces. The field is then seeded with a blue rye mix or with Bermuda seed depending on the climate. The rate for Bermuda seed is 1lb. /1000sq. ft. The rate for the Blue/Rye mix is 250lbs. per acre. A minimum of 25 yards per field of nitrified sawdust is then applied to protect the seed. The seed must be kept moist during the length of field closure. Upon opening the field, the turf must be dense and hardy enough to withstand soccer play and other activities. Mowing: Monday: Terman, Nixon, Escondido, Barron, Briones Tuesday: El Carmelo, Greendell, Palo Verde, Ohlone. Wednesday: Duveneck, Addison, Walter Hays, Jordon. Thursday: Fairmeadow, Hoover, J.LStanford.
