Vol. 16 No.11 November 2018 Up the Garden Path by Jill Storrie These are photos of an amazing garden I was lucky enough to visit in September. Located in Castle Hill, it s a remnant 5 acres of one of those marvellous big properties on Old Northern Road, with distant views to the mountains. It has an architect-designed Modernist house and landscaped Japanese style gardens, with a pond full of Koi, a little natural looking waterfall tumbling over bush rock between azaleas in all their glory. What did I love? All of it the lines of the house, married beautifully with the Japanese garden, fringed at an upper level carport with a white wisteria in full flower, hanging like the fringe of a huge parasol. Lower down, there were terraced woodlands, with a small orchard further afield, and unusual plants and trees, bright double orange clivias, rhododendrons, and hippeastrums trying to find the sun.

2 November 2018 Page 2 Some bits and pieces. With Susan and Elizabeth, I attended the Hawkesbury Spring Gardens Competition Presentation Evening in October. You may remember we sponsored a $100 prize. It was won by Ebenezer Public School Our very own Elizabeth Teo won a highly commended in the Best Seniors Garden, despite her recent shoulder surgery. Congratulations Elizabeth, and thanks for our visit last month! The last photo is of my son s garden at Woodford, with the tulips I bought at a meeting last year after a talk by Mirva from Mr Fothergills. Rob s first-ever tulips doing very well! 3 November 2018 Page 3 Meeting 1 st November 2018 Gardening Q & A and Discussion regarding Open Day / Library Event This is a get together where members can seek information regarding gardening matters and or participate in providing answers for others. The last time we held one of these sessions many members commented on how much they enjoyed it. It will also be an opportunity to put forward any suggestions to improve the next open day. By Louise Johnson There are many terms to describe areas of vegetative growth, some of which appear to mean the same thing. I was curious about this and decided to do some research. I started with familiar terms, and discovered along the way other terms I had not heard before. Listed below are the results of my research. Boscage A mass of trees or shrubs; a thicket. Bosk A small wood or thicket, especially of bushes. Bush. Brake A place overgrown with bushes, brambles, or cane. 4 Clump A small, close group or cluster, especially of trees or other plants November 2018 Page 4 Copse From coppice, by contraction, originally meaning small wood grown for purposes of periodic cutting. Forest A large area of land covered with trees and plants, usually larger than a wood. Grove A small wood or forested area, usually with no undergrowth. A group of trees planted and cultivated for the production of fruit or nuts. Holt (archaic) A wood or grove; a wooded hill. Hurst (archaic) A wood. Orchard An area of land devoted to the cultivation of fruit or nut trees. Plantation A large group of trees that are grown to be cut down for wood. Scrub An area of land covered with short trees and bushes, growing on dry ground of low quality. A large area covered with low trees and shrubs, as the Australian bush. Spinney A small wood with undergrowth. Stand The growing trees, or those of a particular species or grade, in a given area. Thicket A thick or dense growth of shrubs, bushes, or small trees. Underwood Woody shrubs or small trees growing among taller trees. Woods A growth of trees and other plants usually covering a smaller area than a forest. Our Gardens Magazine Our Gardens Magazine is the quarterly magazine published by The Garden Clubs of Australia for the members of affiliated garden clubs such as ours. It has many interesting articles on a wide range of gardening subjects such as notable gardens, individual plant species and their culture, and pest control etc. mostly written by garden club members. Judy Horton has a regular page and Peta Trahar is a frequent contributor. This publication is available by annual subscription of $15.00 mailed to you. Those members wishing to subscribe or renew their subscription for 2019 please contact John Jones no later than 6 th December 2018.

November 2018 Page 5 Macquarie Towns Garden Club Minutes of Meeting Held on Thursday 4 th October, 2018 At Elizabeth Teo s Home, 21 Greenway Crescent, Windsor Commenced: 2.20pm Ann Chilman welcomed everyone to Elizabeth s and thanked Elizabeth for hosting the afternoon. Library Event/Open Day Ann said that the Open Day went very well. Some suggestions for next year: Provide small boxes for multiple plants for people to carry with them Different plant tables for specific plants eg succulents Afternoon tea being provided free was excellent General opinion is for April over September as there is better weather to bring more people along and there would have been more plants due to no frost over the growing season. Day should commence at 1.00 pm so that people who are on a lunch break could attend. Stan Steven s room was an excellent venue, ask library if the room can be made available to us next year. Alexander s talk on waterwise gardening was fantastic and thanks to him for providing written notes. General Business We have not heard back from either the Council Garden Competition or the drought relief. $100 was donated for a prize for the School Garden. The presentation is to be held at Windsor RSL on 17 th Oct 7.00pm. Susan will pick up Elizabeth Teo as she has entered again this year. Christmas Lunch Village Kitchen at Kurrajong, 12 noon, 6 th December Visit to Penrith Regional Gallery and Lewer s Bequest Tuesday 30 th October Flyer received from Open Fuchsia Garden Hazelbrook Public School 10 th November No florist talk in November so there is a discussion re open day as well as Q & A from members The Secret Garden is looking great after frost damaged a lot of the plants, Ann said that they have done wonders in the last 4 years. Ann moved that the Club provide a $100 donation for the Hawkesbury Show for Seconded by Susan.
