1 Central Coast-Lake Macquarie Rose Region Tahlia Rose Chair: Jan Hissey Meetings 3 rd Sunday in the month at Wyee Community Hall at 1.30 for 2.00pm start Corner Hue Hue & Wyee Road, Wyee NSW Bank: St George Bank Account No: Branch: Proudly sponsored by Newsletter January 2018 NOVEMBER MEETING We raffled off 3 prizes, one big tub of Sudden Impact donated by Neutrog which Peter Sumners won, a $50.00 gift voucher donated by the Wyee Nursery which Lionel Peak won and also a large potted rose donated by the Wyee Nursery won by Marie Mc Laughlin. The November meeting with guest speaker Anja Harper attracted over 30 people. Anja talked about different rose varieties, rose pests & diseases and how to eradicate them. She demonstrated the art of pruning roses and what to do, to grow healthy roses. Many members brought in samples of their roses with diseases and Anja explained what the specific disease were and what could be done about it. We welcome two new members to our club: Una Sherry and Jocelyn Perry who both joined at our November meeting, which brings our membership to a current total of 63.

2 NEW MEMBERSHIP FEES AS PER JANUARY 2018 The State Council of the NSW Rose Society Inc. decided on a new membership fee structure as per 1 st January Individual membership fees remains at $ Membership fees for households, i.e. 2 adults living in the same household will attract an additional $5.00. As mentioned previously, this step was necessary due to insurance reasons. ROSE CARE CALENDAR: Tips for January (From NSW Rose Org.) Water the roses regularly; spray to control black spot and mildew, as well as two-spotted mite, as retention of foliage is very important. If you prefer to have flowers right through summer and autumn, with quality varying from poor on warm days to fairly good on cool days, continue to remove faded flowers and feed the bushes well in late January. We recommend NEUTROG S Sudden Impact for Roses as it has all the essential nutrients your roses need. Chair s Advice Fertilise before rain and weed after rain. If nothing else, remove weed seed heads as 1 year s weed seeds means 7 years weeds! The Lowdown on your SOIL Janet White, will be the January Guest Speaker talking about The Lowdown on your soil. Janet holds a Diploma in Horticulture, a Certificate of Viticulture and a Certificate of Oenology. She taught The Basics of Gardening and an advanced Gardening for Gardeners at the Hunter Community College from 1995 till She also planted a small vineyard and made wine under licence with her husband Barry Gow between 1993 and Currently she is involved with a number of environmental groups in Lake Macquarie Lake Macquarie Landcare, Ocean and Coastal Initiatives, LMCC Community Ecosystem Monitoring Programme, Australian Plants Society. 3 Which will address terrestrial soil composition (not potting mixes), ph, local soils, soil improvement, rose requirements and touch on fertilisers. This is your big chance to BRING IN YOUR SOIL SAMPLE from your patch, to find out about the condition of your soil. Instructions for bringing in a sample Dig down 50mm (2") Use hand fork to loosen this soil. Take out half cup full & put into plastic bag or clean container. Please label it with your name. Depending on time, Janet will test one sample per person first; you can bring in multiple samples, but she may not get time to test more than one each. Anyone interested in cheaply buying some 'Architectural Succulents' Agaves should contact Chris & Brigitte Zakos. Phone: of Blue Haven. Agaves are easy to care for, easy to harvest & replant, just cut the stem with a BIG knife about 2-3"down from head and plant up to their necks in any soil. There is something about leaving them out of the ground for a week, best look it up. They prefer sun being Succulents but really do well anywhere.
