Our guest speaker Janet White s theme was The lowdown on Soils and she gave a humorous address on Soils. She told us the best composition of Soils especially for Roses, in content and texture. Janet spoke of anchor roots and feeder roots as well as Compost & ph. She then talked about Nitrogen for leafy growth, Phosphate for fruit and flowers and lastly Potassium for strength and vigour. ROSE CARE CALENDAR: Tips for February We still experience very hot weather conditions and rain hasn t come so far. SEAMUNGUS keeps your plants cool to survive in these extreme weather conditions. It reduces heat stress, improves plant and root growths in dry conditions.

2 Tips from the Chair YELLOW & ORANGE FLOWERS ATTRACT GOOD INSECTS TO YOUR GARDEN! Plant Nasturtiums, very easy to grow, look pretty & don't need any care. You can eat the flowers in salad & also the leaves which have a peppery taste like cress. NEVER WET THE LEAVES OF ANY PLANT! Unless you are wanting to wash off dust, or remove accidental fertiliser... Rain is OK, as it doesn't have Chlorine or Fluoride etc. COMPANION PLANTING RULES FOR SOME COMMON HERBS Never grow Parsley and Mint together, they don't like each other and do a lot better planted at least a metre away from each other. Put Mint in a pot as it is very, very invasive and keeps shooting from the smallest piece under the soil. Never grow Coriander & Dill (Fennel) together, same applies. Happy Gardening Jan Lyn and Tracey Seiffert who volunteered over the past year to provide us with coffee and tea at our meetings have had to step back from their afternoon Coffee/Tea duties for the next two months, due to unfortunate family circumstances. The Chair thanked Lyn and Tracey for their excellent work and asked for more volunteers. At the end of the day, Pauline Cain volunteered to undertake these duties. Thanks to all of you! Last month s raffle prizes were a Rose called Bonica; it has small perfect pink buds on a small Floribunda bush. The other prize was a First Issue of Rose stamps. Many thanks to our Deputy Chair, Ruth Sumners for her diligence with the Raffles. The rose was won by Jan Hissey, unfortunately the name of the second winner of the First issue of Rose stamps was not recorded.

3 L I B R A R Y N E W S Don t forget to have a close look at our Library next time you attend the meetings. There are quite interesting books available helping novices as well as experienced rose growers to perfect their skills. Here are just a few examples. Natural Rose Growing is a book for rose growers who would like to cultivate roses in a natural, chemical-free garden environment. It explains how to control pests and diseases and how to fertilise using natural methods. Recipes and directions for use of organic sprays and fertilisers are given, together with lists of natural predators that will provide alternative methods of disease and pest control. What Rose Is That? This book is an authoritative and comprehensive guide to more that 1100 of the world s most popular and best-loved garden. It will appeal to both experienced rose growers, and those who would love to establish a rose garden in any part of the world. This book combines detailed information on the care and cultivation of roses with specific information on individual species, listed according to variety. What Rose Is That? Is the definitive reference work that will inspire and delight everyone, from the gardener with a casual interest in roses, to the confirmed enthusiast. THESE ARE ONLY TWO BOOKS IN OUR LIBRARY STOCK! Have a look at ALL of our books at the next meeting where all books are on display! Kerralyn, our Librarian is happy to assist you! Our February Guest speaker will talk about Gardening in Containers. Here are a few tips beforehand from our member John Humphries about planting Roses in containers: 1. Pick a large pot. At least 50cm diameter for bush roses, miniatures 40cm, climbers 80cm.

4 2. Buy a top quality potting mix. You really get what you pay for. 3. Feed with Neutrog Sudden Impact for Orchids. 4. Additional liquid feeding every 1-2 weeks during growing season. 5. Spray every 7-10 days for pests and diseases. Remember prevention is better than cure. I use an organic products from Organic Crop Protection. 6. Water frequently, at least every 2nd day and in hot weather more regularly. Roses love water. Give them a good soak not just a sprinkle. This will encourage roots to grow to the bottom of the pot. The Tahlia Rose is the Signature rose of our club. A tall growing floribunda rose, bred and introduced by leading Australian amateur rose breeder Richard Walsh. It has large, double, hybrid tea style blooms in a deep rosy pink with a creamy centre and a yellow reverse. They are generally produced in small clusters, have a moderate fragrance, and are set amongst medium to dark green matt foliage. 1.6m x 1.2m. It has been suggested at our January meeting by Barbara Snowball, to arrange a visit at Ruth and Richard Walsh s farm near Maitland with over 1000 roses of which 600 are breeding roses. NAME BADGES At our January meeting the matter of name badges was raised and it was agreed to ask our members to find out who is interested in a name badge, at member s own expenses. Preliminary research made, suggest that a simple name badge with the name of the member, the Thalia Rose symbol which is our Club s signature rose, would cost in the vicinity of $ each, depending on the numbers we order. Cheaper versions with just the name on it are around 50% less. A separate will be send out to find out who is interested in purchasing a name badge.

6 GOULBURN S 25 th Annual Rose Festival 10 th - 11th MARCH 2018 The Goulburn Rose Committee is holding their 25 th Annual Rose Festival at the Veolia Arena 47 Braidwood Road, Goulburn Showground. The theme of the Festival is The Mad Hatters Tea Party and will be officially opened at on Saturday 10 th March. Entries for Rose display are open now at the cost of $1.00 per entry. (Instead of our meeting at the Wyee Community Hall). Cost per person $10.00 which is heavily discounted and includes: Guided Tour by their Horticulturalist, John Humphries, who is a member of our Rose Regional Club. Entry fee as well as tea & coffee. 7 HAPPY NEW YEAR (AGAIN) AND WELCOME TO THE YEAR OF THE DOG! The Chinese Horoscope 2018 predicts that this year of the Brown Earth Dog is going to be a good year in all respects, but it will also be an exhausting year. You will be happy, yet frustrated, rested, yet tired, cheerful, yet dull! Planning, postponing and negligence are words you will need to remove from your vocabulary during this year. Refreshed and regenerated, the Dog will accelerate the initiation of all things, but this will bring, in the same time, pressure and stress in the everyday life. According to Chinese Astrology, 2018 is a very good year regarding the financial aspects, but a little difficult from a health point of view. Actually, in the year of the dog, all zodiac signs will want to pay special attention to their health. Year 2018 is the ideal time to start eating healthy, doing sports and getting rid of bad habits and indulge in gardening and nature!
