Designed as an eco-friendly community, these townhomes promote many options for people looking to minimize their impact on the environment. The extensive green roof began with a Tremco Built-Up roof to protect the interior of the building. After the membrane was secured, the engineered media, pea gravel edging, and decorative plants completed the green roof. The first photo shows the completed waterproofing of the roof. The second photo documents the installation of the plants. This roof garden also has a patio area with potted plants. A paver walk way invites the owners to meander through the green space. To add interest and variety, square metal dividers are filled with two types of rock; Dark Mexican Beach Stone and Multi-Colored River Rock.

2 Neuhoff Packing Plant 1312 Adams Street GREEN ROOF DESIGNER/ LANDSCAPE PIVOT Landscape Architecture Portland, OR PLANTS & GROWING MEDIA: GroWild Nursery Fairview, TN Famos Mod-Bit roof 2,600 square feet Historic Renovation As part of the owners' ongoing renovations of the original meat packing plant, an extensive green roof was proposed on a two story section. Designed as a pilot project to determine the viability in this area, the owners plan to install a larger green roof on an adjacent building with further plans to turn this once abandoned warehouse into a center for Nashville's arts and sustainable conservation design. The project started by removing the existing roofing to install the necessary vapor barrier, insulation, and first layer of Famos waterproofing. The top membrane integrated copper foil into the modified membrane and surfaced with hydrogel crystals to improve drought resistance. Five inches of growth media topped the waterproofing. Over 1200 plants from 15 different species were installed on this roof. The landscape architect and plant supplier chose to use plants indigenous to Middle Tennessee. The edges and penetrations required an 18" border of pea gravel to aid in proper drainage and to limit root migration.

The greenroof facilitates the reduction of air pollution by returning oxygen into the atmosphere. The roof s growth media is an excellent insulator that aids reduction of heat build-up in the interior resulting in a decrease in utility bills. Additionally, the greenroof reduced storm water run-off and established a habitat for birds, butterflies and other creatures eight stories above street level. The two-ply Modified Bitumen roof system provides the waterproofing along with additional components of root resistance, drainage, and water retention. Wall flashings were covered with a soy-based reflective coating for aesthetic and environmental reasons. RD Herbert also fabricated and installed metal edging to add support to the rubber pavers and provide containment of the growth media in specific locations. Additional metal included 16-oz copper drip edge, copings, and curb covers. Our custom sheet metal shop fabricated and installed the 11 ga powder coated aluminum safety rail around the perimeter of the green roof. By utilizing all aspects of our company, roofing, sheet metal and custom metal, allowed smooth transitions from one phase to the next and limited the amount of different trades on the roof

Prior to construction of the nature center, the architects envisioned a structure that reflected the sense of being on the water and decided to mimic a pier. The extensive green roof over the public meeting space provides the park building with an effective roof covering and a nature display for the center. This project has been recognized by the State of Tennessee and the American Institute of Architects for it's sustainable design. Our company supplied all the materials, growth media, and plantings and installed the entire system. A variety of sedum plants were chosen for their hardiness and ability to withstand drought. The scope of work also included flashing, custom fabricated drain-through edge metal, and gutter. We also integrated a rain chain to funnel water to the ground in lieu of a downspout.

Having completed many of the cities' green roofs, our company decided to install an extensive green roof over our own entrance canopy. When a client enters the secondfloor reception area, the green roof provides a pleasant view through the windows. This photo shows the installation process of the root barrier, drainage mat and metal edging. The metal edging separates the pea gravel from the plantings and does not allow shifting of the growth media and aids in preventing root migration. An assortment of plants chosen for this area include: Liriope Silver Dragon, Dianthus Deltoids, Rosemary, Elijah Blue, and Liriope Big Blue.

Using CCW 500R to waterproof the roofing deck provides maximum protection while allowing for multiple finished surfaces. Exposed coverings include concrete slabs, wood decking, and planting areas. The use of native plants reduces the necessity of excessive watering. Separate roof areas allow the building owners to have their own relaxing, secluded private roof space while providing additional separate community roof areas. Opposite the green roof, a white Carlisle TPO membrane reflects the sunlight to reduce heat in the building.

Fundamental sustainable items include a geothermal heating and cooling system, a cistern that reclaims water from the parking structure to be used for irrigation and restroom lavatory facilities, and a green roof that helps keep the building cooler, manages storm water run-off, and extends the life of the roofing system. A two-ply/glaze coat temporary roof was installed on all concrete decks to allow interior work to progress at the same time as the roof installation. The new roof is divided into several roof assemblies each beginning with a Garland built-up roof. Specific areas were then surfaced with the green roof, finished with a reflective coating, or covered by pavers. Our company also installed a Berridge Vee-Panel wall system with all associated trim, flashing, and gutters.

This contemporary structure incorporates many values of sustainable design including a green roof, NanaWall (window wall system) and Rheinzink metal wall panels. The project includes new hot rubber waterproofing for the roof and under the roof top saltwater pool. Multiple finished surfaces include extensive green roof, paver ballast, rock ballast, teak decking, and gunite at the pool. All but the last two finishes are supplied and installed by RD Herbert. Rheinzink Blue-Gray reveal metal wall panels encase the penthouse, mechanical area, and elevator shaft. Matching Rheinzink coping, gutters, downspouts, flashing, and edge metal finish the roof. Concerns about the salt water tarnishing the Rheinzink flashing guided our company to use a stainless steel ledge flashing around the pool area.

The existing sculpture with its marble base were retained. This extensive green roof aids in water retention and visually expands the area. RD Herbert & Sons Company installed a loose laid TPO membrane over the existing roofing. A root barrier and drainage mat were applied over the membrane to complete the waterproofing system. A perforated shop-fabricated drain-box covered the existing roof drain, allowing access for maintenance. The growth media and plants were provided by GroWild Nursery.

In 1974 the gardens were replaced with Legislative Plaza. Renovations started in 2004 to repair leaks in the offices and parking garage below. Our work included waterproofing the entire plaza, front atrium, stairs, and a small structure across Charlotte Avenue. RD The architect chose Carlisle CCW reinforced liquid membrane to cover and protect the space below the Plaza. The existing plaza pavers were removed by the General Contractor to allow us access to the concrete deck. Due to the size of the project, phasing was necessary beginning with the main plaza then the stairs, front atrium and finishing with the tunnel access building across the street. Two additional upgrades to the Plaza were also done by RD Herbert at the request of the State.
