He went to a lot of trouble to provide all those in attendance a well thought out and very informative program. I would highly recommend subscribing to his tropical bonsai magazine. It is also informative and contains some great info on tropical bonsai. This month is a BYOT meeting. These are always a great way to share knowledge with each other, while we work on our trees. Hope to see you there. Ed JULY PROGRAM NOTES BY: DICK MILLER I thoroughly enjoyed presenting what I have learned about Collection Management. I think you could tell there is much more to the subject. A few people asked questions that may not be remembered as follows: The names of the recommended books are: Bonsai (its form and function), by Deborah Koreshof (may be reprinted soon, hard to find.) Botany, Plant Form & Function, Volume One by Randy Moore and W. Dennis Clark A New Tree Biology, Dr. Alex Shigo Those looking for my tropical magazine, see Subscription required to get password to read ($5 for all past issues and the rest of 2010.).

2 Those who wanted some of the organic fertilizer, I ran out of, see the same web page. Suggest buying in bulk and sharing amongst the club in baggies. Postage eats up the cost. The program was created uniquely for your club. I plan to revise it to an overview that is half the depth of detail of material presented to you (An overview), and offer focused presentations of each subject covered in detail. Thanks for your patience and interest, it was a joy to meet with you. AUGUST PROGRAM: BY: BEN LISS This month s program will be a BYOT program. For our new members, this is a, bring your own tree when we each bring in a tree or two with our tools and we work on our trees for the morning. It is an opportunity to bond with our fellow bonsai enthusiasts and ask our more advanced members for some help. As I have said before this is one of my favorite programs. Not only because I don t have to worry about getting a speaker (insert laugh here), but really because it allows us to help each other and utilize our club members expertise. It s also really nice to work inside in August! We have had some great trees for our display table the last few months. Thanks everybody for participating. Since we will be using most of the tables this month to work on, for those of you that bring a tree for display, we will display them in front of our work stations in order to conserve tables and space, so plan accordingly. CHECK IT OUT BY: TINA TROUT Recently, Anita Lorenz shared an article with me she found in the current issue of Florida Gardening Magazine about a lovely spot few people seem to have heard about. That statement seems really surprising when you consider that the entrance is marked with an 8 ton granite statue of Hotei, The Japanese God of Happiness. I m talking about The Ichimura Miami- Japan Garden at 1101 MacArthur Causeway, Miami. This lovely garden is half way between Miami and Miami Beach, on Watson Island. Mr. Kiyoshi Ichimura, a wealthy Japanese Businessman, gifted the garden to Miami in He purchased ancient Japanese artifacts and shipped them along with Japanese workmen to construct, to his specifications, (what is now) the roughly one acre site. The garden has had several rebirths through the years, thanks to city budget cuts and hurricane damage but thankfully has survived. The tranquil garden has a 4 ½ ton stone pagoda, a rock garden, a koi

3 pond with black bamboo and tropical almond trees and an 8 foot waterfall. Tropical native trees abound in beautiful presentation and harmony with rock, water and gravel. This is a true Japanese garden in all respects. Admission is FREE and the garden is open 7:00 A.M. to 3:30 P.M. Monday through Friday and 9:30 A.M. To 6:00 P.M. on Saturday and Sunday. Phone for more information. SMITH COLLECTION CURATOR SOUGHT Landingham to be the curator, but the deal fell through. Dahan said their ideal candidate will be an experienced bonsai artist; familiar with Smith s work and able to maintain the trees in his style; and able to put in hours per week keeping up with the collection and educating the public. Salary is negotiable. Jim Smith is helping to screen candidates. He can be reached at REPRINTED FROM TREASURE COAST NEWSLETTER The country s best collection of tropical bonsai may be open to the public before the end of the year. Now all it needs is a curator. Plans for the James J. Smith Collection are moving along at Heathcote Botanical Gardens in Fort Pierce, according to director Amy Dahan. Property is being cleared and old buildings are being removed to make way for the winding path that will lead visitors through 100 trees that were grown and styled by Smith. When finished, the collection will be the largest of it,s kind in the US. Dahan expects the collection to put Heathcote on the map of the bonsai world. The fiveacre park has had a small bonsai collection for many years that was donated by members of the TCBS. It also features a Japanese Teahouse built by Jonathan Turner, son of TCBS members Richard and JJ Turner. Heathcote had been negotiating with Smith s longtime collaborator Jim Van CLUB INFORMATION: TO ALL HER GOLD COAST FRIENDS Many of you have already heard the sad news of the passing of Marion Trout. A lot of you called her Mom. She was a fixture at BSF conventions for the past twenty five years or so attending with her son Ed and I. She loved talking with everyone and seeing all the beautiful trees. Mom adopted some of you, her Bonsai Boys (you know who you are). She proudly attended Gold Coast meetings when she was in town. Mom helped out manning the booth at Morikami (remember the nats and the heat!). Marion

4 was always willing to lend a hand, to help, with a joke and a smile. She never failed to ask ask after her bonsai friends and send a big REPRINTED FROM WIGERT S NEWSLETTER hello. She always treated me like a daughter. Our hearts are heavy. We lost BY: Erik Wigert a Mom and best friend. Thank you all for your thoughts and prayers and support. Her obituary follows: Marion L. Nogal Trout, 86, passed into Gods care Friday, July 16, 2010 following complications of surgery. Born and raised in Akron, OH she moved to Florida in 1952, residing in Miami, Key West and Miramar during her 35 years with Sun Bank. Predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Lester W. Trout. She is survived by 3 sons: Edward Trout (Tina) of Pembroke Pines, FL, Gerald Trout (Susan) of Lakeland, FL and Thomas Trout (Diane)of Brandon, FL; and daughter: Pamela Weixler (James) of Sebastian, FL. 11 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren. A celebration of her life was held on Thursday, July 22, 2010 at 10:00 AM at Seawinds Funeral Home 735 S. Fleming St.,Sebastian, FL. Interment was Friday, July 23, 2010 at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL. INSTRUCTOR BOOK IS NOW AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE NEWS FROM WIGERT S: We would like to announce that on Wednesday August 11th we will be joined by SUTHIN SUKOSOLVISIT of Royal Bonsai Garden in Stoughton, MA. Suthin is well known for his work with shohin bonsai among other things. We will have a morning 10 person bring your own tree workshop at 9am, followed by a lecture/demo at 2pm in the afternoon. The lecture will include refreshments and a special raffle ticket for a price of $10.00 The morning workshop will be $65.00 and you can bring your own tree or we will help you select one from our nursery. Once again we are offering the workshop first to our newsletter subscribers, there is limited availability so let us know as soon as possible if you want to attend the workshop. Also we have received shipments of collected Campeche and Nia from Puerto Rico, and will be receiving Tintillo and Malpighia Coccigera in the coming weeks as well. Be sure to stop in and see what s new this summer! Another development is we have expanded our sales of styled prebonsai and bonsai on ebay. These are unique one-of-a kind trees, view them by searching for us on e-bay. We will be listing new trees each week through the summer. We sell under the user name: wigertsmangogrove. Local buyers can pick up the trees at
