2 2018 Washington State FFA Spring Fair Aims and Purposes It is the aim and purpose of the Washington State FFA Spring Fair to produce a setting for Agricultural Education students to display, for the public, their agricultural projects developed through the Supervised Agriculture Experience Program and through the FFA. Agricultural Education prepares students for successful careers and a lifetime of informed choices in the global agriculture, food, fiber and natural resources systems. Exhibit excellence is stressed. Exhibits should include the art, science and production of crops, livestock and aquaculture; and the management and exploitation of natural resources including forests and its products, and wildlife. Chapter exhibits need to be arranged in attractive groupings. The objective of the FFA Exhibition is to attract the attention of fair guests, so they will stop and appreciate each display. These groupings will be awarded 30 to 50 points as chapter displays. 2. Regarding display "furniture": The Fair has a limited supply of display risers and carts for us to use if chapters are interested in reserving them in advance. However, chapters need to provide the balance of their own furniture to display their exhibit groupings. Posters and trifold entries may use fair-furnished 3 x 8 tables and poster display panels if requested. Please make arrangements by April 10th with the FFA Spring Fair Manager. 3. Each FFA display need to have appropriate sized signs that clearly identify the following: A. The chapter that created the exhibit B. Description of the display and its purpose. C. What is its value to the education of FFA students. 4. FFA Chapter exhibits need to include some kind of engaging feature. Examples are: A. Explanatory presentations or demonstrations by FFA members. B. Activities that involve public participation C. Simple games (related to the exhibit) that pique the curiosity of the fair guests D. A looping explanatory video E. A display board showing the steps done to complete the FFA exhibit. 5. A Chapter Promotion exhibit lot has been added for chapters to describe their yearly activities using text, photos, drawings etc. 6. Small animals (such as rabbits and chickens) may be used when making public presentations or demonstrations. 7. A two hour presentations by FFA members are required for every exhibits of the same class, lot and theme. 8. FFA exhibits that are class assignments (multiple floral displays, rope work and tooled leather items etc) need to be judged by the exhibiting chapters and recorded on the display tags. Note: The above changes follow the recommendations by the 2017 WSFA Spring Fair Commissioner and The Washington State Fair Administration. 2

3 Rules and Regulations Continued 9. Exhibitors must use Entry Tags furnished by the FFA Spring Fair. Exhibitors must PRINT NEATLY his or her first and last name, description of entry (in some divisions), Class, Lot, and Chapter with a ball point pen. Unreadable entries may be disqualified. Tags must be securely attached to each exhibit, but allow one copy of the tag to be removed without losing any information on the underlying copy. 10. Exhibitors will be paid on their best two entries per Lot unless otherwise specified. Except for UPDATED Agri-Science projects, entries shall NOT have been shown in previous school years at FFA fairs at the Puyallup fairgrounds. 11. The Washington State FFA Spring Fair reserves the right to withhold premium payments from any exhibitor conducting himself / herself in a manner unbecoming to the FFA. 12. The Manager and staff may disqualify any projects that do not meet the standards of quality and workmanship that proudly represent the FFA program. (Computer generated and enlarged materials are recommended). 13. All entries must be projects of active bona fide FFA members and chapters in good standing. 14. All judges decisions are final. Protests must be made in writing and must be filed with the manager within 24 hours after the cause for protest. 15. Except for Ag Issues Exhibits, official dress is required when conducting presentations, demonstrations or participating in any of the exhibits. Ag Issues dress may be typical of the dress that they are demonstrating. 16. Except for expensive portable equipment (which is allowed to be removed daily for security reasons), exhibits will be in place at the Fair by 12 noon on Thursday, April 19th and remain in place until the Fair closes on Sunday. (Exhibits will be accepted from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM Wednesday.) 17. Rules of Conduct: FFA members must follow and are under the rules of local school districts, and during the FFA Spring Fair must follow special rules pertaining to the Spring Fair. FFA members must follow the FFA Code of Ethics as adopted in 1952 at the National FFA convention and published in the Official FFA Manual. Disciplinary Action: the advisors will deal with Students out of compliance with the rules of Spring Fair. If this action does not remedy the situation, the responsible supervisory person shall deal with the issue. A state staff person shall deal with any difficulty beyond this point. 18. Advisors should contact the FFA Spring Fair Manager for ADA concerns. 19. Premium moneys awarded to chapter entries will be paid to the respective chapters. 3

4 DIVISION I AQUACULTURE 1. Each exhibitor, will be limited to one pen. A pen consists of three (3) of the species entered. 2. All entries MUST BE individually owned by the exhibitor for 60 days prior to the opening of the Fair or be part of a Supervised Agricultural Experience. 3. Exhibitors will provide all holding tanks and aeration equipment required to exhibit the entry. 4. All feeding, cleaning and care for the fish MUST be provided by the exhibitor for the entire length of the fair. 5. The judge may eliminate (excuse) any entry or group showing evidence of diseases or severe stress. 5 DIVISION II - HORTICULTURE 1. All exhibits shall conform to the size requirements indicated by the management. 2. Chapters and individuals must have owned the exhibits and have personally groomed them. 3. Exhibits shall be free of contaminating insects and disease. The exhibitor or chapter may be asked to remove any exhibit showing contamination. 4. Exhibits shall be in place for the duration of the fair. 5. No commercially grown plants shall be entered in the Horticulture division, except class All Horticulture exhibits (except for plants used in a Class 800 Landscape) shall have been grown or produced as part of the instructional program or supervised agricultural experience program of the FFA. 7. Exhibitors will be paid on a maximum of two per Lot. In Design and Floral classes, each exhibitor will be paid on only one per Lot. 8. Exhibitors must follow the changes shown on page 2 (New in 2018) CLASS CHAPTER COMMERCIAL DISPLAY 1. Display will be made up of plants grown by the chapter. 2. Chapters will be limited to one entry per chapter. 3. Premium points will be awarded to the chapter for its display. 4. Plants will be displayed in an attractive manner as if for sale. 5. Exhibits shall be limited to an area of approximately 40 square feet 6. Space shall be assigned according to the needs of the display. LOT-A Chapter Display CLASS INDIVIDUAL COMMERCIAL PRODUCT DISPLAY 1. Plant materials will be displayed in an attractive manner as if for sale. 2. Display must feature common name, variety and color. 3. Display must include a written scenario, as to how/where the display will be used. (Flower shop Mall, NW Home and Garden Show etc.) 4. Exhibits shall be limited to an area of approximately 10 square feet 5. Premium points will be awarded to a maximum of one entry per exhibitor. LOT-A Individual Display CLASS LANDSCAPE DESIGN 1. Plans must be designed and drawn by the students. 2. Plans must be 20 by 24 on vellum or white copy paper and mounted on 22 by 28 poster board in a neutral color. 3. Entries may be for: outdoor residential or commercial design; indoor (mall, lobby, interior) design; or an outdoor design including a hot tub, deck (with construction details); or design for FFA Exhibition landscape. 7 CLASS 1200 TURF AND GOLF COURSE MODEL 1. At least five students must be involved in the making of the display (size: 2.5 x4 to 4 x8 ) 2. Display must be a three dimensional scale model. Winners in this division will subsequently compete to represent Washington State FFA at the National FFA Agri-Science Fair in the fall. 2. Refer to Agri-Science Handbook at for additional information or call Projects competing for the National FFA Science Fair must submit the project s abstract to the Spring Fair Manager by April 7, and must include the exhibitor s name, FFA chapter, Class and Lot (see below and see Abstract Form at the end of this book). A judged presentation must be presented on Saturday, April 21. All displays must be signed in and left in the Agri-Science area by noon, Thursday, April 19. Exhibitors residing outside of King, Pierce, Thurston, Kitsap and Mason counties may bring their project materials to the fairgrounds on Saturday morning and remove them after their presentations. However, premium points will not be paid on these projects, just the presentations. They still will compete for Nationals. The Class and Lot for the Agri-Science presentations is 2400A. 4. Displays will be judged on the following criteria: Educational value; attractiveness; readability; spelling, punctuation and grammar; and workmanship. Management may disqualify any displays not meeting criteria. Exhibitors will be paid on one entry per Class. 10 DIVISION VII PRESENTATIONS 1. Demonstrations / Presentations must be rehearsed before agricultural instructors before presentation at the fair. 2. Demonstrations / Presentations will be given on the hour from 10 am until 8 pm. Exhibitors will give continuous demonstrations during the hour they are assigned. 3. FFA official dress MUST be worn during the demonstration. No more than white points will be awarded to exhibitor without FFA officials. Ag Issues teams may wear costumes. 4. The Judged Agri-Science Presentations consists of the exhibitor, standing by his/her entry and answering a list of questions posed by the judge about the exhibit entered. This applies only to Agri- Science projects. They are required for entries competing for Nationals. 5. Public Presentations consist of the exhibitor presenting his/her entry to the public at the fair. A Public Demonstration is the traditional How to.
