Green your space! When you choose to purchase premium quality slab cut turf from Coolabah Turf, your landscape investment also buys you free lawn care advice for the life of your lawn not just on the day of delivery! Our back up support team of professional turf managers will GUARANTEE you always have the best looking lawn in the street! All of our turf comes with a 10 year guarantee, ask about our GREAT GRASS GUARANTEE when you place your order. The Coolabah Turf philosophy to specialise in the exclusive supply of environmentally sustainable watersmart turfgrass varieties will ensure we fulfil our lawn for life promise to every customer. All Coolabah Turf instant lawn varieties are harvested fresh daily from our Echuca farms straight to your home all in less than 24hours! All Coolabah Turf products are supplied in an easy to lay slab cut form to ensure fool proof establishment for every DIY home or commercial landscape project. Premium slab cut turf also means each piece is nearly half the weight of traditional turf rolls, making the install process less back breaking and more fun for the whole family. It also means our turf can comply with maximum lift weight requirements dictated by OHS legislation.
Because slab cut turf comes with a thicker base of soil (between 30-40mm) it will establish twice as fast, require half as much water, and means our premium varieties are now available all year round! We do however recommend that turf laid during cooler weather be placed in full sun and low traffic areas only. We offer daily deliveries, 6 days a week to service professional landscape, commercial and homeowner DIY projects in every region, including Albury, Echuca-Moama, Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong, Gippsland, Horsham, Melbourne, Mildura, Mornington Peninsula, Shepparton, Swan Hill and everywhere in between. To enable our regional customers to let their toes try before they buy, we have a number of retail outlets around the state. Checkout our website for a full list of distributors to locate your closest landscape display and stockists of our aftercare product range. Despite our state s water storage levels being at capacity currently, it is critical we all continue to water lawns on an as needs basis only. Make sure you always install drought tolerant turf to help protect your long term landscape investment because when our next cycle of drought returns all our lawns can easily be sustained with tank, grey or bore water if need be. Green your space today with luscious lawns from Coolabah Turf. We guarantee you ll love it!
Sir Walter is Australia s number one selling Buffalo lawn and is the only Coolabah Turf variety that will thrive in full sun and shade. Sir Walter has become so famous; homeowners now install Sir Walter around homes to boost property prices before going under the hammer! Perfect for: Residential yards with kids and dogs, or a non invasive, low maintenance feature lawn around garden beds, courtyards, and pools. Its broad leaf exaggerates texture in all landscape environments. Available: All year round for areas that are full sun. Shaded or high traffic areas should be limited to September to May only. Characteristics: Soft broad leaf, which is a luscious, rich emerald green colour. It s drought tolerant, low maintenance, highly resistant to most common insect pests including Black Beetle, and most turf diseases. It is also salt tolerant and pet resistant. Unlike other buffalo varieties, Sir Walter will withstand a broader range of selective herbicides and other chemicals to aid with ease of ongoing maintenance if required. It has a fast creeping growth habit, which means it is self-repairing against any damage from daily wear and tear. Unlike other creeping grasses, Sir Walter s unique root system only travels across the top of the soil surface, not underneath it, which means it is less invasive and easier to manage without any chemical. This lateral growth habit also helps slow evaporation which means Sir Walter is able to survive on less water. This dense growth habit is not only responsible for reducing irrigation frequency, it also acts as a barrier to weeds. Consequently, Sir Walter is known as one of the most environmentally friendly grasses available, requiring less fertiliser and chemicals than other varieties.
Sir Walter thrives on heat, but will, unlike most other summer active grasses, still perform well in shade. Details: As Australia s go anywhere, grow anywhere premium lawn turf, Sir Walter is the most versatile grass currently on the market. The initial cost is a little higher than many other varieties of instant lawn, but the ongoing costs of watering and maintaining Sir Walter are a lot less than any other turf. The long-term durability of Sir Walter will also mean greater protection of your investment. Sir Walter is a new generation soft leafed buffalo, which is protected under the Plant Breeder s Rights Act. To ensure the supply of Sir Walter is a consistently high standard, it can only be sold by licensed growers. All genuine Sir Walter turf will be sold with a certificate of authenticity. A thriving Sir Walter lawn should be mown at a height between 30mm-40mm.
Perfect for: Public green space corridors, low maintenance school ovals, second tier community sporting venues, nature strips, or residential home yards without automated irrigation. Eureka VG Premium is perfect for areas which need to sustain high traffic during winter as it is more active than other drought tolerant turf varieties during dormancy. If this lawn is loved too much, it will be extremely high maintenance, so is perfect for anyone who wants a lawn they rarely have to fertilise or irrigate but be prepared to mow regularly during peak summer periods! Available: All year round full sun only. Characteristics: Eureka VG Premium is a bright green turfgrass (generally two three shades stronger in visual colour than common Kikuyu). It boasts a tight sward which is due to a unique characteristic of shorter internodes, which promotes more frequent branching and therefore greater density. This unique growth habit aids in faster establishment, faster recovery from wear and superior weed suppression than other common Kikuyu varieties. Eureka VG Premium is grown exclusively under license, and was sought by Coolabah Turf production managers in the hunt for a warm season turf variety with superior drought tolerance and winter colour retention. Eureka VG Premium s superior degree of drought tolerance is due to its massive fibres root system which enhances more efficient water and nutrient uptake than common Kikuyu varieties. This trait dictates that Eureka VG Premium is watered significantly less than any other drought tolerant turf variety currently on the market. We recommend it is watered on an as needs basis only to prevent high thatch build up and unnecessary maintenance.
Eureka VG Premium s proven winter activity means it will establish in cool climates all year round, whether the project is installed with both hard turf, or stolens. Its impressive winter growth habit also enables Eureka VG Premium to recover against wear or frost damage despite cold temperatures. This core trait makes Eureka VG Premium an appealing alternative for Councils managing open green space corridors and is a superior performing turf choice for community sporting reserves. Details: Eureka VG Premium must be grown in full sun. It will not tolerate shade. Eureka VG Premium is best managed if mown at approximately 25mm. When used in a sports turf environment Eureka VG Premium will perform best if maintained with a cylinder mower at an optimum mowing height of between 15-20mm.
Perfect for: High traffic areas including public access parks & gardens, playgrounds, caravan parks, nature strips and recreation reserves. A great low budget home lawn option. Available: All year round. Characteristics: Hard wearing, drought tolerant, requires minimal fertilising, self repairing, aggressive growing, competitive against unwanted weeds. Details: Eureka grass is like the Collingwood Football Club - you either love it or hate it. It is most widely used in northern Victoria by councils, schools, and caravan park owners because its aggressive nature guarantees it will withstand the wear and tear of heavy foot and vehicle traffic in public access areas. For home lawn situations, you will need to either apply a chemical, build a substantial garden edge or edge your lawn on a regular basis if you wish to control Eureka s invasive lateral growth into adjoining garden beds. Eureka will lose some of its colour during the cooler months while it is dormant. Eureka needs to be grown in full sun.
Perfect for: A great backyard turf for budding sporting heroes ideal selection for backyard cricket if you want the ball to bounce or to help create a home golf green! Great drought tolerance, best results when cut with a cylinder mower. Perfect for professional sports turf environments and premier community sporting fields. Available: All year round full sun only. Characteristics: An attractive, fine leaf dense turf variety which can be mown extremely short to produce a manicured looking home yard. It has high thatch, low water requirements (great droughttolerance), superior performing sports turf, aggressive creeping grass, recovers well from general wear, can be maintained as low as 10mm in height for sports use. Details: A summer active grass which prefers to grow in full sun areas, Nullarbor Couch has been the superior performer in golf course situations in southern Australia for more than 15 years. It is a very dense grass and grows aggressively in most soil types. Nullarbor Couch is an exceptional drought-tolerant grass and is midgreen in colour. Nullarbor Couch will lose some of its colour during the cooler months while it is dormant.
Measuring and ordering Measuring and ordering your turf Simply work out the square meterage (m 2 ) of the area you plan to cover with instant lawn. The following examples may help with more accurate measurements: Square or rectangle length x width = m 2 l w Triangle (90 o ) length x width 2 = m 2 l w Circle 3.14 x radius x radius = m 2 r Semi circle 3.14 x radius x radius 2 = m 2 r Once you have determined the correct m 2, contact us for a quote and to confirm delivery details. Generally we require two to three days notice prior to your preferred delivery date.
Site preparation Each situation will differ according to the type of soil you are working with. The best lawns are in the best preparation this is a critical step to ensuring a great result for a healthy lawn longer term. We recommend you do not lay turf on top of any existing grass to avoid any future weed problems, therefore, it is advisable to spray out existing grass using roundup or a similar product, then remove the desiccated weeds from the site. If your site already has a good base of topsoil of at least 100mm you may just need to rotary hoe the area. Then smooth and shape the finished surface. If you have minimal topsoil onsite, you will need to import a quality turf underlay from your local sand and soil garden centre. We recommend an ideal soil depth of between 100mm-150mm of quality soil. To accommodate for our premium quality slab cut turf, we recommend your prepared surface sit approximately 30mm below concrete paths, or garden edges for Nullarbor and Eureka varieties. If you are installing Sir Walter, you will need to leave your soil height 40mm below. You may choose to check your soil PH is maintained at a neutral mark of approximately. 7 to ensure the essential nutrients are available. PH testing kits are available at most nurseries. Applications of pelletised fowl manure eg. dynamic lifter or a similar product, applied to your prepared surface at 20kg/100m2 will help with initial soil moisture retention while also providing an effective slow release fertiliser.
Laying your lawn NB. Turf is a perishable product. It is critical you lay your turf as soon as it is delivered. Laying tips Before laying the turf, ensure the following: Ensure the prepared surface is firm enough to walk on whilst laying but not packed too tightly. Make sure the soil is moist to avoid scolding the roots, especially during warmer months. We recommend you rake water crystals through the top 20-30mm of your prepared area to enhance moisture retention. Apply fertiliser as supplied over prepared surface before laying your lawn. Begin laying turf along the longest and straightest edge of the prepared site, using a brick laying technique. This simply means you should stagger the joins, which will help retain turf moisture. If laying turf on steep gradients, you may have to peg it down to prevent it from moving until roots have initiated. When you have finished laying all turf, you may wish to use a roller over the surface to ensure good soil-turf contact. Water the turf immediately after laying and then two to three times a day, for at least the next fortnight. (Depending on the time of year and climate conditions of the immediate environment). Keep traffic to a minimum during the first 6 weeks after laying the turf. Essential equipment you will need to lay your turf: Spade Shears or sharp knife to cut turf in and around garden edges, sprinklers etc Rake (to smooth out any disturbance to soil whilst laying)
Irrigation Protect your investment install an irrigation system! To ensure the long term life of your lawn and minimise the demands on your personal time caring for it, we recommend you install an automated irrigation system prior to laying your turf. If you live in a region severely affected by water restrictions, warm season grasses (ie: Sir Walter, Eureka, Nullarbor) have the lowest water requirements of all turf varieties on the Australian market. This makes them the most drought-tolerant lawns you can buy. Their unique growth habits mean they can live without water for 4 months of the year. They should only need to be watered between October and April #, as compared to Fescue lawns, which will usually require moisture all year round. Regardless of your turf variety, once the turf has matured, don t feel obligated to water every night. You should try to water less frequently, but with larger quantities. Ideally you should try to get into the habit of watering once a week, or twice a week during peak summer months. This will force the roots to chase the moisture further into the ground and help train your lawn to become more drought-tolerant. To calculate your total summer water requirement, you could estimate approximately 20-25mm/m2/week for the main irrigation season. For new turf establishment you could estimate approximately 40mm/m2/ week. NB. This will vary according to climate conditions and soil type. To minimize water requirements during establishment we recommend you use Sir Launcher (starter fertiliser and water crystals) when laying your new turf. # In Northern Victoria, dependent on seasonal weather conditions. If you would prefer assistance from qualified landscapers to help install irrigation systems and lay the turf for you, contact Coolabah Turf for a list of professional contacts in your area.
Mowing your new lawn You may start to mow your new lawn as soon as the turf is firmly rooted (generally about 2 to 3 weeks - root establishment may take longer during cooler months). When mowing, ensure your blades are always sharp to prevent plant injury. Generally, never remove more than one third of the grass length in a single mowing. When mowing your Sir Walter lawn, keep your mowing height between 30mm 50mm to ensure it maintains its soft leaf texture. Mowing heights for Nullarbor and Eureka varieties should be between 20mm 30mm. During the cooler winter months, these warmer season grasses require minimal, if any, mowing at all. Annual maintenance Apply Sir Walter Fertiliser to your new lawn 5-6 weeks after installation. November February Dethatch your lawn if it starts to feel a bit spongy (optional). Apply Sir Walter Fertiliser after dethatching to enhance your lawn s speed of recovery following dethatching April Apply Sir Walter Fertiliser (critical to prepare your lawn for winter conditions) May Apply Sir Walter Fertiliser June Apply Seasol (a plant conditioner to help protect your lawn from frost and promote winter colour retention) July & August Apply Seasol September & October Apply Sir Walter Fertiliser (critical to help your lawn recover from Winter) NB. This is a guide only. If your lawn incurs any additional stress it may require further management. You may notice some weed invasion during winter dormancy this is a normal part of a warm season grass life cycle in our region. You may choose to either hand weed where possible, or apply a selective herbicide to assist.
