The course requirements consist of viewing on line videos that come from 3 fall seasons of the television program "In the Garden With Bryce Lane" which aired on UNC TV during 2003, 2004 and Each show is about 30 minutes long. There are a total of 73, 30- minute programs that make up HS 200. The show topics are listed below. The assignments for the course (listed below) can all be done at home and there is no requirement for you to come to campus to complete any assignments. I am excited that you have decided to join me in this unique form of distance education, and I look forward to working with you as we move through this class. If you have any questions about class material or about the assignments please don t hesitate to contact me, either by phone or by . The videos are available via streaming video and you can access the following web site to view them: There is a Moodle site for this course. Correspondence and assignment submission can be conducted through that site and a gradebook will be posted. The link to the Moodle site is: If you are not able to access the MOODLE site, you can mail, or use software like Dropbox for submission. The 15 assignments can be submitted a few at a time during the semester or all at the end of the semester but no later than the last Thursday of the semester. I hope you enjoy learning about the basic principles that lead to better gardening. Lastly, please feel free to call or me if you have any questions about any part of the course.

2 HS 200, Home Horticulture - Syllabus and Course Outline Instructor: Course Details: Objectives: Lee Ivy, 124 Kilgore Hall NC State University, Box 7609 Raleigh, NC Lee_Ivy@ncsu.edu Three credit hour video course based on the NC PBS television show, In the Garden with Bryce Lane After completing this course students should be able to: 1. understand how plants are classified and named and how to use those names to better select plants for the home garden 2. have a working knowledge of horticultural terms and vocabulary 3. understand the environmental and cultural factors the affect how plants grow and manage those factors to grow better plants 4. propagate plants both sexually and asexually 5. manage their garden soils by composting, fertilizing and building them 6. properly select and care for indoor and outdoor plants for the home garden 7. plan their own landscape area and properly select plants for that area 8. select correct plants for appropriate landscape settings 9. identify proper methods of planting, pruning, pest management, and soil preparation. 10. explain how to develop a specialty garden 11. select plants based on their ornamental characteristics (flowers, fruit, branching, habit, bark etc.) 12. demonstrate how to use containers in different forms of gardening 13. demonstrate the correct methods of garden bed preparation

Pest Management HS 200, Home Horticulture 15 Assignments: To be completed after watching all 73 Shows of "In the Garden" It is important to read the assignments first before watching the 73 videos so you can plan completing the assignments in a timely fashion. ALSO, keep in mind that digital photography would help you create excellent records for many of your assignments. ******Your own photographs are required in some of the assignments, so be sure to read the assignments well ahead of time to plan accordingly! You will see how incorporating photos into your assignments can help communicate your knowledge immensely!

6 Assignment #1 Vocabulary List Compile a list of a minimum of 125 terms that are talked about in all 73 episodes of In the Garden and write a definition of the term in your own words, then use it in a sentence. Also Identify what show you heard the term. Example: Olericulture: The study of the cultivation of vegetables. Carrots, beets, and squash are examples of olericultural crops. Introduction: show #1. Assignment #2 (Photographs required) Plant classification Visit a local garden center or botanical garden, photograph each tag/label of 20 different plants, then write down the scientific names found on a plant tag or sign. Label each scientific name, identifying each part of the name. Also, evaluate whether the sign or label was correctly written using the botanical rules and indicate how it should be written correctly if it is not. Be sure to consult a reliable source to find the correct name. Example: Ilex Fosteri : Ilex is the Genus Fosteri is the cultivar term the specific epithet is missing, it should follow Ilex and precede Fosteri I looked up the plant and the specific epithet should be attenuata The correct name should be Ilex attenuata Fosteri Or Acer platanoides: Acer is the genus platanoides is the specific epithet Acer platanoides is the species Name is correctly written Assignment #3 (photographs required) Take some cuttings and, grow some seeds The assignment is to propagate some plants using cuttings, and using seeds. Based on the classes about propagation choose some plants to propagate (at least 4 different species for each) sexually and asexually. Keep a record of exactly what you did from the time you started until the plants either rooted substantially or seedlings began to grow. Take photos documenting what happened (or didn t happen!) Your records should include such things as a description of the materials used, structures built, plants chosen, dates of sowing, cutting, dates of germination and rooting, percent germination and percent rooting etc.the final document should be detailed enough so that someone could read it and reproduce your work! (This assignment can t be done until you watch shows # 13, 14, and 15)

7 Assignment #4 Diagram of Plant Growth Without copying another source, use the information from the shows on absorption, translocation, photosynthesis, transpiration, and respiration to create a diagram of plant growth. The diagram should show/explain each process and show/explain how they relate to each other. Use a diagram w/ text to represent the processes so someone who knows nothing about plant growth would understand it. Each process that you describe should occupy at least ½ of a page or they can be combined into a comprehensive drawing. Artistic quality is not required but clarity is essential. Assignment #5 (photographs encouraged) Landscape Planning Choose a small non-landscaped garden space. Draw up a pre plan, a to-scale base map and final plan for that space indicating what plants are to be selected and where they are to be planted. Be sure to indicate the planting size of the plants and the time of year the garden will be installed. Including images of the space would help you show the space you intend to work with. Provide a plant list and describe each plant you intend to use in the landscape area. Assignment #6 (photos required, can be taken from the web) You are a writer for a gardening magazine. You have been asked to do an article on woody plants for the home landscape. Choose 10 trees, 10 shrubs, 5 vines, and 5 ground covers and write up a detailed description for each plant describing the plant s size, spread, other ornamental features, cultural requirements, and uses in the landscape. Remember, this is a magazine article and it should be creative and graphically interesting Assignment #7 You are working as a consultant for a homeowner who likes to do it yourself however he/she needs careful instruction in lawn establishment and care, pruning woody trees and shrubs, and correct container gardening. Write up a program, at least one page for each task, (diagrams are welcome) that they will use to complete the landscaping tasks listed above. Remember to write in a way that someone with limited horticultural knowledge would be able to successfully perform. Assignment #8 Specialty Garden Plant List (photos required) Choose 4 specialty gardens covered this semester and develop 4 separate plant lists with 7 plants for each specialty garden. Describe each plant and explain why it is recommended for that particular garden. Possible specialty gardens: Patio, shade, espalier, arbors, retaining walls, water gardens, fragrance garden, topiary, vegetable garden, etc.

8 Assignment #9 Bed Preparation Choose a garden space in or around your own home (or someone else s). Perform a soil test using the NCDA service. If you are not in NC, check with your state agency or purchase a simple soil testing kit. Based on the soil test report amend the soil correctly. Add any other amendments that you believe will make that garden bed more successful. Write up a summary of what you did including the results of your soil test. Include a copy of the soil test report. In order to complete the task in a timely manner it is recommended to take the soil samples early in the semester Assignment #10 Learning from other gardens (show # s 32, 40, 41, 50, 53, 58, 63, 64) This season we devoted 7 shows to other gardens located in North Carolina, England and in Italy. Prepare a complete list of gardening practices that were identified from all the gardens visited. In other words, what ideas did we get from visiting the other gardens. Example: Isola Bella in Italy: 1. Using tier gardening to deal with steep slope and increase planting area and reduce erosion. 2. Hydrangeas are a plant that can be espaliered along a wall. Assignment #11 Gardening Calendar Put together a gardening calendar scheduling garden practices for September, October, November, December, January and February. List specific practices for specific months. Give at least 15 practices for each month. Assignment #12 (photographs required) Postharvest life of cut flowers This assignment is designed to help you determine the best way to treat cut flowers to make them last the longest in the vase. Purchase or procure one half dozen cut flowers (roses, carnations etc.). Place one flower in each of 6 vases. One vase should be filled with water, one with a combination of water and Sprite or 7-up (1/2 & 1/2 mixture), one with water and floral preservative, one with water and a penny and one with water mixed with one aspirin. Change the solutions and re-cut the stems every 2 days. The sixth vase should be filled with water only and the flower not cut every two days. Also, do not re-cut the stem in the sixth treatment. Keep a record of the appearance of the flowers and record when the flower in each treatment has fallen below acceptable quality. Photograph the progress of this experiment. Assignment#13 (images required can come from the web) Tender perennial and annuals Create a list with descriptions of 10 tender perennials and 10 annuals that you would recommend for a garden to be planted in the public area of one's home. Be sure to explain why you chose each plant. Assignment#14 (images required can come from the web) Growing Houseplants (shows 47 & 48) Choose and describe 10 different houseplants (use scientific and common names). Be sure to include how to select and choose the right interior location for each plant. List the cultural requirements for each plant (potential pest problems, watering needs, light needs etc.)

9 Assignment #15 (images encouraged) Write a plant paper Choose a horticultural plant that you would love to learn more about. Research the plant you chose in books, journals, magazines, the Internet, or any other reliable sources. Write a 4-6 page paper that includes historical information about the plant, how to grow the plant (culture), and how the plant is used by people. Be sure to include a bibliography at the end of the paper indicating where you found your information. Try not to get bogged down by this assignment, but concentrate on learning about a new plant!
