2 WELCOME TO THE LAWRENCEVILLE 2011 GARDEN AND BACKYARD TOUR! After a few year hiatus, the garden tour in Lawrenceville is back! This self-guided walking tour is brought to you by the Lawrenceville Hospitality Association. Lawrenceville is a large neighborhood and the stops are spread throughout, so we hope you have your walking shoes on. All of the gardens show the rich history and each one offers unique features. The Allegheny Cemetery has generously offered their parking lot located inside right beside the Community Garden! If you choose to park there, please be mindful all vehicles must be cleared from that lot by 3pm. Street parking will be available all day! Each house will be marked with signs and balloons. Many of those opening their outdoor spaces to the public will also be providing drinks and food along the way. Make sure to thank all of the participants. Lawrenceville changes a little bit every day new restaurants and cafés, new galleries, new home renovations, new vintage clothing outlets, new design companies. This garden tour is just another way of experiencing the hospitality of Lawrenceville. SUPPORT LOCAL RESTAURANTS! For lunch, be sure to stop by one of the many restaurants in Lawrenceville. They serve up the flavors you savor, from home-style breakfasts through late-night bites. Multi-generational Lawrenceville mainstays attract loyal customers for world-famous fish sandwiches and old-world Italian favorites. Newer ventures expand into vegetarian, New American, and global traditions. Lawrenceville is also home to five coffee shops that deliver an early-morning lift. And when you re in need of a nightcap or live music, drop into one of Lawrenceville s hip bars or traditional taverns.
3 SUPPORT LOCAL BUSINESSES! Just don t window shop on your walk, be sure to check out the great merchandise that the businesses have to offer. Lawrenceville is becoming known for its locally grown businesses, because of the friendly community feel and the creative vibe. Our business districts are home to independently owned shops, studios, and art galleries that offer many one of a kind products. For more information, please visit: LAWRENCEVILLE HOSPITALITY ASSOCIATION LHA was incorporated in 2010 by a group of Lawrenceville residents for the purpose of engaging in activities that promote the positive aspects of residence in the community, and through fund-raising activities to make distributions to community organizations and grassroots activities that lead to the improvement of the quality of life in the neighborhood. The Annual House Tour is the Association s signature event and has been held annually since The tour is held each year on the 1 st Sunday in October and is open to houses in the 6 th, 9 th and 10 th wards. The Annual Garden Tour of some of Lawrenceville s many creative uses of backyard urban spaces was reinvigorated by the Association in June The Garden Tour is FREE to the public and self-guided. From roses to herbs our Garden Tour is another way to show our Hospitality to friends, neighbors and visitors.

5 EACH LOCATION WILL BE MARKED WITH NUMBERED POSTERS AND BALLOONS. Allegheny Cemetery Door on Butler Street near Stanton Avenue Stanton Avenue & Butler Street Lawrenceville Organic Community Garden in Allegheny Cemetery 5218 Butler Street Access through front door of studio 5234 Butler Street Prism Stained Glass / greensinner 5301 Lotus Way Front porch garden 4821 Butler Street Gate on right side of the house 4642 Hatfield Street Gate along fenced yard 184 Home Street Gate is on the left side of the house. Pick-up location for tour maps. Representatives from various community groups will be on hand to share even more ways you can get involved with Lawrenceville happenings! Make sure to get one of the limited number of VIP reusable bags, on sale for a suggested donation. Their mission is to promote urban food production and community building. They provide a forum to connect with neighbors and share cumulative knowledge on plants and food. Volunteers at the garden are able to take home any fresh vegetables, fruits, herbs that are ripe and available. This space gets its character from the stone retaining walls for flower beds and the original brick walkway. The garden features Peonies, Hostas, Astible, Lilly of the Valley and a variety of herbs. Containers of annuals and brightly colored furniture add interest to this relaxing retreat. Ice tea and cookies will be provided to visitors. Prism Stained Glass has generously provided use of their studio yard as a cut flower garden for greensinner, a community vegetable garden and as a meditation garden to bring a little beauty to the Butler Street streetscape. Water will be available to visitors. Seeds will also be given away This terraced patio on a steep street has been transformed into a verdant container garden featuring herbs, vegetables, and flowers, most started from seed. Committed to organic growing practices, a lot has been done on this patch of concrete. On land adjacent, a city owned lot is undergoing phytoremediation using sunflowers. Banana bread will be available to visitors. This charming and intimate cottage garden will truly surprise and delight the lucky guest. A hidden side gate opens to a cobblestone path lined with shade loving plants. It draws the guest past the covered veranda and toward the winding brick walkways. Perennials accented with seasonal annuals evoke a special tranquility and solitude, while a corner nook provides a private spot for meditation or bird watching. Water will be available along with fresh cookies. To maximize limited growing space, raised beds and containers are utilized. A rain barrel and rain chain serves as the sole water source for plants and a former chicken coop has been turned into a respite on those hot summer days. Visit to see a backyard surprise you won't be disappointed! Refreshments will be served. The garden was designed as an cross between an Easter Vigil Garden and a Native American Storytellers TeePee. The house is an 1880's row house with stained glass windows. Lemonade will be provided to visitors.
6 th Street Gate along street st Street Gate on left side of house 231 Fisk Street Additional access from Bowery Way 251 Fisk Street* *The garden is only reached using Bowery Way 258 Fisk Street Front and back gardens th Street Access through driveway th Street Gate on right side of house 3506 Butler Street Across the street from Dozen Bake Shop Leftover foundation stone mark where an alter and nave once stood, as this was the site of a German Reformed church. A large crepe myrtle and a 100+ year old Quince are two highlights of this shaded space. The garden provides a relaxing retreat in the city and a play place for children. Cookies and a refreshing drink will be available to visitors. This is a well maintained garden that provides a peaceful and comfortable place to relax. There is a vegetable garden along with hardy perennials. Color is noticed from the many variety of plants. A cooler of water will be on site for visitors. This gardener is not a professional, but enjoys watching things grow and is always looking for new plants. An herb garden was added this year, with Borage as a highlight. Pennsylvania native plants have been mixed into the garden found at Slyvania Natives in Squirrel Hill. Refreshments will be available. Mature lilac trees and a lush dogwood provide a shady and breezy haven for many varieties of wild birds while newly added woodland plants are beginning to fill in as ground cover in this tiny backyard which also has a parking pad when street parking is limited. Home-made sugar cookies will be available to visitors. Our gardens, front and back, feature a variety of plants chosen because of their foliage and not their flower. Almost everything is perennial and carefree! Most of the ground cover is somewhat invasive, but easy to "edit". This May we planted a beautiful triple-trunked Heritage Birch tree purchased from Cavacini's here in Lawrenceville. Refreshments will be available. This large, by Lawrenceville standards, yard has been completely transformed into gardens. Twenty years ago, this space was nothing but grass and weeds. Survival of the fittest rules in this mature perennial garden, as stronger growers crowd out the weaker. Note the special emphasis on easy care garden roses. This landscaped backyard comprises a perennial garden and a small water feature. Some of the trees and plants that can be found include a Peach tree, blueberry bushes, tomatoes, herbs, cone flowers, butterfly bushes, Japanese Maple, hostas, honeysuckle and more. A light snack will be provided to visitors. Dozen Bake Shop repurposed an overgrown city lot to grow veggies and herbs for use in the bakery. A repurposed city lot turned into a small scale urban farm. The veggies and herbs will be used in Dozen s shop. Lemonade will be available Howley Street Access from Howley Street (gate on left side) or Cabinet Way. This is a must see 42 x20 space with many unique features! Over 100 perennial flowers, vegetable garden, double helix brick pathway, green wall, cinder block planter, rain chain, rain barrels, and more! It is well worth the walk (or drive) up the hill! Water, ice tea and fruit will be available. Free Cannas will be given away.
