3.11 Recreation Facilities Index of Recreation Facilities: 20. Keller Senior Center 21. The Keller Pointe The Existing Parks and Open Space Map on page 3-82a) depicts the parks, recreational facilities, open space and cemeteries in the City of Keller. Chapter 3B Existing Parks Page 3-77
20. The Keller Senior Center Address: 660 Johnson Road Type: Other Park Facilities The Keller Senior Center is located within Johnson Road Park, and is a heavily used and unique asset in the parks and recreation system. Comments The Keller Senior Center is located centrally in the City, easily accessed from Johnson Road. The siting is unique in that it and the Johnson Road Library are located within Johnson Road Park, a neighborhood park. The adjacencies of these public facilities create a synergy of use that benefits all visitors. The current facility has long since outgrown its space in terms of the numbers of people it serves. To meet the needs of Keller residents, the facility needs to be expanded or a new location sought. Public input from the Attitude Survey showed strong support for the expansion of the Senior Center, when respondents were asked if they would support a bond election for this facility as a potential project. A letter from the Keller Senior Council details their needs, and is included in Appendix B: Public Input. Chapter 3B Existing Parks Page 3-78
Existing Amenities in the Keller Senior Center Programmed Space Meeting space Various activity rooms Natural Resources/ Open Space Park adjacency Built support/ amenities Parking lot Recommended Park Improvements for the Keller Senior Center Programmed Space/Support Facilities Conduct a study to determine if the optimal, long term solution is to expand the existing facility, relocate to another existing facility, or build in a new location. Natural Resources/Open Space None Sustainable Opportunities Place preference on the application of native plantings including trees, wildflowers and grasses. Introduce shade trees as part of the annual tree planting program as appropriate For landscape maintenance; place preference on the use of naturally fertile compost and protective mulch. Chapter 3B Existing Parks Page 3-79
21. The Keller Pointe Address: 405 Rufe Snow Type: Other Park Facilities An elegant sculpture at the entry of The Keller Pointe accents the contemporary architectural expression. Comments The Keller Pointe is a modern natatorium combined with a fitness facility and indoor outdoor water playscape, located within The Parks at Town Center. The facility is well conceived, with activities for all ages, including an elevated indoor track. The siting is also well planned: parking wraps around the curving site, and the generous, arcing trail invites visitors to an outdoor play area, suitable for young children. Along the outer edge of the parking area, natural planting areas are a well designed feature. Several attractive interpretive signage pieces describe the vegetation in detail. Farther along beyond the play area, the trail leads to a steel bridge, which connects to the park areas further east. An important feature of the site is the manner in which the built structures are sensitively placed within the natural environment, creating a compelling juxtaposition and argument for local and native landscapes. Chapter 3B Existing Parks Page 3-80
The outdoor aquatic playscape at Keller Pointe is colorful and attractive. A man walking his dog enjoys the trail beside the well-conceived modern and shaded play area. A steel bridge, oxidized to a rich, natural rust color, connects hikers, joggers and cyclists from The Parks at Town Center to Keller Pointe. Chapter 3B Existing Parks Page 3-81
Existing Amenities in The Keller Pointe Programmed Space 2 Gyms 6 Basketball goals 1 Fitness center (indoor) 1 Elevated Track (indoor) Outdoor playground Outdoor Leisure Pool Outdoor pavilion Indoor leisure pool Exercise/Dance room 3 Multi-purpose rooms Childcare room Party room Massage room Indoor & outdoor locker rooms Natural Resources/ Open Space Lake adjacency Creek adjacency Designated wildflower areas Built support/ amenities Parking lot Recommended Park Improvements for The Keller Pointe Programmed Space/Support Facilities Natural Resources/Open Space Part of The Parks at Town Center. Sustainable Opportunities Place preference on the application of native plantings including trees, wildflowers and grasses. Introduce shade trees as part of the annual tree planting program as appropriate Continue to implement an integrated fertility and pest management program to maximize field conditions, plant health and safety; place preference on the use of naturally fertile compost and protective mulch.
