6 Specific hazards associated with the respective campus include pressure releases, spills involving hazardous chemicals, and fires which threaten the environment and human health. All hazardous materials are stored in proper containment (e.g. flammables, corrosives, poisons cabinets) and are labeled appropriately to HazCom standards. All incoming chemicals are inspected for package and content integrity. Additionally, all incoming hazardous material are further classified, segregated, and stored based on the dangers they pose and compatibility by trained personnel using information such as an SDS. Assigned personnel from each department performs routine inspections of chemical storage containers and containment areas to identify potential problems and if necessary, take corrective action. In the event of a spill, emergency spill containment materials are available within each department. When an incident occurs, the first step is to keep the problem from escalating by closing off the affected area, if possible. In case of a spill, floor and storm drains are plugged and all sources of ignition are removed. Small fires are put out with appropriate fire extinguishers and the Maintenance and Operations team is notified. First, the material and the point of release need to be identified. Next, the source must becontained if the situation is safe. In the event of a spill, the hazard will be contained using emergency containment material. After containment and proper decontamination, the container will be labeled and prepared for proper disposal. If the pressure release, spill, or fire is too large or dangerous to handle, then a emergency call will be utilized. Spills involving less than 5 gallons, or if the spills creates an immediate danger to life and health (IDLH), an emergency activation of our contract abetment company will occur. When emergency situations require a building evacuation, building Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) members activate their buildings emergency notification protocol (see attachment below). Additionally, Public Safety will be contacted to evacuate building personnel and students to their identified Evacuation Areas. If the emergency is beyond our ability of respond and impacts IDLH to the entire campus, the campus emergency alarm will be sounded to signify an immediate campus-wide evacuation. In an event of an emergency, would utilize the Blackboard Connect Mass Notification system to notify employees of a hazardous event. This system provides multi-level messaging which includes call out to home and cell numbers, text messaging and s. 7 The full report will be found within the Public Safety Office, as well as in each department where hazardous materials are located. Employee training records (including drills), release reports, persons responsible for maintenance/safety records and emergency phone lists can also be found at in the office of the Coast Community College Coordinator. Employees receive training in various subjects relating to spills, emergency response/ notification procedures (ex. theuse of a SDS), labeling and other facets of environmental regulations upon being hired and review annually through on-line delivery training, scheduled training and department meetings. Hazard specific training is provided to each department based on the type of material, the handling, storage, and emergency response requirements.
