6 Facility Location and Description Outside Flammable Storage & Hazardous Waste Storage Building Boom Room Between the Dow Science Building and Brooks Hall. Hazardous waste is stored in the Outside Flammable Storage Building which is surrounded by the Greenhouse. The waste building is completely separated from the Greenhouse internally but shares three common walls. It can be accessed from either Washington Street or Ottawa Court Single Entry Door Only Roof has 4 large plastic or metal blowout panels that will NOT support the weight of a human. The building is protected internally by a solid powder fire suppression system that can be activated manually or automatic from a sudden increase in temperature inside the building. A portable fire extinguisher is mounted near the door When this system is activated an alarm will sound at CMU Police. The building has an internal 8 dike to contain liquids in the event of an accidental release. The building is kept locked at all times. An eye wash station and safety shower are located inside the building. A spill control station has been installed on top of the shelving. It consists of 22 pound bags of cellulose absorbent material (Hazmatpac), spark free shovel, broom, smaller spill control pillows, booms for larger spills, empty drums for packaging cleanup, emergency drum sealer, gloves, etc. The building also stores Chemistry Dept. flammable liquid solvents in 1 gallon bottles on the west wall. This includes: Acetone (280 gal), Hexane (120 gal), Methanol (60 gal), Isopropanol (40 gal), Petroleum Ether (4 gal) and Ethyl Acetate (60 gal). Yearly purchased volumes are indicated in parentheses. There are also 37 small 30- ml plastic bottles of pure Mercury metal with double containment provided in the interior room. They are located on the shelves within the inner small room. Exact amounts of reagent chemicals can be found at this link: Hazardous Waste is stored on the shelves opposite from the flammable solvents. The Biology Department stores their inventory in the left corner of the building as you enter. The Biology Stockroom Manager is Jeff Scofield (989) , Brooks Hall Room 141, scofi1ja@cmich.edu Biology Dept. Office (989) , Biology Dept. Chairperson Tracy Galarowicz Biosciences Building Room 2100 (989) The Chemistry Department occupies the back half of the building. The right rear corner of the building is the location of the solid powder fire suppression system. The tanks are mounted on the wall inside this area.
