BRE Global / LPCB News ICSC use BREEAM to green its retail developments throughout Europe The International Council of Shopping Centres (ICSC) now has over 20 of its members shopping centres in thirteen countries being assessed under BREEAM. ICSC are using BREEAM to drive the sustainability of retail developments throughout Europe, creating a benchmark for their environmental performance to ensure ongoing improvements. Ermine Amies, Managing Director at ICSC Europe said: Whilst there has been much talk about the greening of buildings, over the last three years enlightened ICSC members have been taking practical steps to make sustainable development a reality. We are delighted that a growing number of our members are now reporting successful adoption of the BREEAM standard for their new developments. To find out more about BREEAM click here Docks 76 by developer Unibail-Rodamco Both the Agrivin and Docks buildings, part of the Docks 76 complex, achieved BREEAM Good for shell and core at the design stage. Particular features of the design which helped achieve this rating included the re-use of an existing building on the site, thereby avoiding the environmental impact of demolition and reconstruction, and a 20% reduction of electricity consumption through the use of natural ventilation. The development also incorporates leak detection systems and water-saving features with the use of water by visitors expected to be reduced by 30% through these measures. In addition to waste segregation during the construction phase, dedicated waste management facilities have been incorporated into the development. A post-construction review will be carried out to determine the final BREEAM rating after fit-out. To find out more about BREEAM click here INSITE09 Constructing the Future 1-4 June 2009 INSITE09, formerly known as OFFSITE, will build on the success of the previous events with a four day exhibition. Visitor to BRE Lord Corbett visits BRE Lord Corbett of Castle Vale, Chair of the Parliamentary Labour Peers, recently visited BRE and was presented with a copy of the Red Book, as pictured below. Guy Hammersley presents Lord Corbett with the Red Book Industry News Oxfordshire Schools Sprinkler Projects Two recent projects in Oxforshire demonstrate further the benefits of sprinklers in schools. In Oxfordshire's first academy, on which work recently started, 1600 pupils in three units on one campus will benefit from full sprinkler protection. A library on the same site to which the public will have access is also to be protected. The other project demonstrates the flexibility and cost effectiveness which sprinklers can bring to a fire-engineered project. The new science building at the independent St Edward's school was designed from the outset to incorporate sprinklers and the innovative design has allowed the block to be built with only one staircase and permits the used of circulation spaces for teaching. The added benefit is that the sprinkler installation is cost-neutral. To read more about these projects please click here. To find out about LPCB s approval of sprinkler systems please click here. 21 die in homeless family hostel fire 21 people were killed in a fire on Sunday night at a hostel for homeless families in Kamien, in northwest Poland. Intense heat destroys structure, damages neighbouring buildings in Texas A lumber yard fire completely destroyed a 100-year-old business in Jarrell, Texas. The building contained paints, lubricants and other flammable material and was constructed of wood. It had a raised floor and a sheet metal exterior. The fire raced through the structure quickly and within five to 10 minutes, the building was fully engulfed. To read the story in full, please click here. New Publications Fire Engineering in Tunnels Pressure on the use of land and environmental protection increasingly mean that new road and rail transport infrastructure is being placed underground in tunnels, with all the inherent fire challenges that this presents. This Digest, by David Charters, provides good practice guidance on the application of fire safety engineering principles to tunnels. It briefly covers a range of issues related to tunnel fire safety, fire safety engineering and consideration of some tunnel-specific issues related to the sub-systems of fire safety engineering. It also lists references for further reading and where to obtain further information. For you copy of Fire Engineering in Tunnels please click here.
