2 Purpose The purpose of this document is to provide an overview of the LED BRIK Strobe System by Birket Specialty Lighting. This document is meant to be a quick start guide, which means that the following information will help you understand only the most commonly used features of the system. System Overview The LED BRIK Strobe System controls up to 16 channels of high powered LED strobes. Each of the 16 channels is configurable for the current supplied to the attached LED(s) on the channel. The LED BRIK Strobe System can be operated in standalone mode using patterns built into the firmware or via DMX 512 connection. Each LED BRIK Strobe System is made up of the following major components: Enclosure stainless steel (NEMA 4x) or painted metal (NEMA 12) Industrial power supply 120/220VAC to 24V DC Brain2000 DMX control board assembly with firmware (revision F05) High Powered LED Brawn Board (HPLBB) for controlling LEDs from 350 to 1500 ma LED Strobes quantity and style varies based on project requirements

System Setup (prior to applying power) As mentioned previously, each of the 16 LED BRIK Strobe channels can be set up for a specific current setting.

3 System Setup (prior to applying power) As mentioned previously, each of the 16 LED BRIK Strobe channels can be set up for a specific current setting. The current settings that are available include 350mA, 700mA, 1000mA, and 1500mA. Each LED channel on the HPLBB has a T shaped header to which a jumper may be connected and the LED current set. Your HPLBB may have been set up at the factory prior to shipping, but it is recommended that you double check all settings before power up. CAUTION LEDs will be damaged if connected to a channel with higher current setting. Understand the current requirements of each of your LEDs and set the jumper to the proper current. For example: do not connect a 350 ma LED to a channel set for 1500 ma. Please refer to the CH. LED Current Setting key printed on the PCB to set each channel. Please use the following current setting for LEDs provided by Birket. If you are using your own LEDs, please understand the forward current requirements of your LEDs. SB 010 XXX Uses Luxeon Rebel LEDs set for 700 ma SB 020 XXX Uses LedEngin LEDs set for 1000 ma SB 021 XXX Uses LedEngin LEDs set for 1500 ma SB 022 XXX Uses LedEngin LEDs set for 1000 ma FIRE Starter 1.0 Uses Luxeon Rebel LEDs set for 700 ma FIRE Cube Uses Luxeon Rebel LEDs set for 700 ma Beyond the jumpers, you should also verify all terminations have been made correctly with the proper polarity. The polarity of the connectors is labeled clearly on each of the HPLBB channels.

4 System Power On Each LED BRIK Strobe System ships from Birket Specialty Lighting with the customer requested power cord type. The LED BRIK power supply will properly detect 120V AC or 220V AC there are no settings to adjust to match your AC at the LED BRIK Strobe System install location. To power the system you will have to first plug in the AC power cord to your source of power. Next you will need to open the lid of the LED BRIK Enclosure and confirm that the LED power indicator on the industrial power supply is lit. If the indicator is not lit, make sure your source of power is active. Next you will need to turn on the low voltage to the circuit board assemblies. The industrial power supply outputs 24V DC, which is fed through an on/off switch and then to the circuit board assemblies. To turn on or off the LED BRIK Strobe System you will need to turn the on/off switch to the desired position. Once you turn the on/off switch to the on position ( ) you will see several LEDs begin to glow on the circuit board assemblies and you will also see data indicated on the 7 segment LED indicators.

When the system is turned on, the following will happen: On the Brain2000 the +5.0V LED will glow (near the power connector at the top of the PCB) On the Brain2000 the +3.

5 When the system is turned on, the following will happen: On the Brain2000 the +5.0V LED will glow (near the power connector at the top of the PCB) On the Brain2000 the +3.3V LED will glow (near the power connector at the top of the PCB) On the Brain2000 the 7 segment display will indicate the firmware revision number briefly in the format of Fxx.x where xx.x is the revision number. After the firmware revision is displayed the 7 segment display will change to display the mode the device was last in before it powered down. On the HPLBB the VLED will glow (near the fuse and J2 expansion connector) On the HPLBB the +5.0V LED will glow (near the J2 expansion connector) On the HPLBB the +3.3V LED will glow (near the J2 expansion connector) All LEDs will be simultaneously energized to the current setting of the jumper

6 User Interface The Brain2000 hosts a set of 7 segment LED displays for showing text and numbers. Furthermore there are three horizontally aligned buttons underneath the display for navigating the modes as well as decreasing or increasing values. In addition there are two LEDs located to the right of the 7 segment display; these LEDs are labeled STATUS and ACTIVITY. The user interface is segmented into screens. Inside each screen values can be adjusted. Pressing the center button (S2) will change from one screen to the next. Pressing the button on the left (S1) will decrease values while pressing the button the right (S3) will increase values. The following table explains each screen further. SCREEN Firmware Display DMX 512A Address SCREEN DESCRIPTION 7 Segment Display: Fxx.x where xx.x is the firmware revision. This screen is only displayed for a moment when the system is first started. 7 Segment Display: Axxx where xxx is the DMX 512A starting address/slot. The decrement/increment buttons will change the address to be lower or higher. Holding down the button will cause the address to change faster. The DMX 512A Address will automatically be saved as you scroll through the addresses. While in this mode any DMX 512A packets will be processed and the LED BRIK Strobes will behave according to the set DMX 512A Mode. Pattern Selection Pressing the center button will change from this screen to Pattern Selection Screen. 7 Segment Display: Pxxx where xxx is the pattern number. The decrement/increment buttons will change the pattern to be lower or higher.

The pattern being displayed will automatically be saved and recalled when you return to the Pattern Selection Screen. While in this mode the patterns are displayed on the LED BRIK Strobes.

DMX 512A Mode Pressing the center button will change from this screen to the DMX 512A Mode Screen. 7 Segment Display: nnxx where xx is the mode number. The decrement/increment buttons will change the mode to be lower or higher. The DMX 512A Mode will automatically be saved as you scroll through the modes. While in this mode any DMX 512A packets will be processed and the LED BRIK Strobes will behave according to the set DMX 512A Mode. Pressing the center button will change from this screen to the DMX 512A Address Screen. System Control The LED BRIK Strobe System can be controlled via DMX 512A or it can run stand alone using built in patterns. The LED BRIK Strobe System stores the last mode of operation it was in before power down. In addition the system will store any user set parameters such as DMX address or pattern settings. For instance, if the system is set to Pattern 1 (P 1 on the 7 segment display) and the system was powered off, next time the system is turned on it will return to this setting. DMX Control The LED BRIK Strobe System accepts a DMX 512A signal via the RJ 45 connectors on the Brain2000 printed circuit board assembly. There are two connectors, one is for DMX 512A input and the other is for DMX 512A thru (daisy chain to the next DMX 512A device). The wiring for these connectors follows the ESTA Standards for DMX 512A. WARNING: DO NOT CONNECT THE RJ 45 CONNECTORS ON THE BRAIN2000 TO ETHERNET EQUIPMENT. MAKING SUCH A CONNECTION MAY DESTROY THE BRAIN2000 AND THE CONNECTED ETHERNET DEVICE.

8 NOTE: As of this writing the DMX 512A firmware has not been fully tested with Remote Device Management (RDM). The LED BRIK Strobe System doesn t respond to RDM, but may behave inappropriately on networks with RDM data. There is an on going effort to revise the firmware. If you are using RDM on a network with the LED BRIK Strobe System and are experiencing problems, please contact us. When a DMX 512A source is connected to the LED BRIK Strobe System and the LED BRIK Strobe System is successfully receiving the data packets you will see the Activity LED flicker or glow. The LED BRIK Strobe System requires one or two DMX slots per LED Channel based on the mode selected. Thus a system using the LED BRIK Strobe system will require 16 or 32 DMX slots per LED BRIK Strobe System controller. Our LED BRIK does not have XLR connectors. If your system requires the use of XLR connectors for the DMX connections, adapters are available to convert the connectors without having to re wire.

9 DMX Control The LED BRIK Strobe System has three modes which are as follows: MODE SLOTS REQUIRED MODE DESCRIPTION 0 1 per channel Strobe with Variable Intensity: Uses the DMX value to set the flash intensity. Set the DMX value to the desired level Drop the value to 0 to flash the light Repeat as desired for multiple flashes 0 = OFF 1 = the least intensity 255 = the highest intensity. 1 1 per channel Strobe with Variable Rate (at maximum intensity): Uses the DMX value to set the flashing rate. 0= OFF 1 = 2 flashes per second 254 = 8 flashes per second 255 = solid ON As the DMX value is increased between 1 and 254, the number of flashes will increase linearly. Full control light fixture with Variable Intensity & Variable Rate: This mode will allow you to treat the same LED fixture as a strobe or as a lamp. 2 DMX channels are assigned to each of the 16 LEDs 2 2 per channel 3 1 per channel The first DMX channel sets the intensity: 0 = OFF 255 = Solid ON The intensity will increase linearly as the value changes from The second DMX channel sets the rate: 0 = OFF 255 = Solid ON The rate will increase linearly as the value changes from Lamp with Variable Intensity: This mode is used to treat the LEDs as luminaries with dimming. Uses the DMX value to set the intensity. 0 = OFF 255 = Solid ON The intensity will increase linearly as the value changes from

10 Standalone Operation When no DMX 512A signal is present, the LED BRIK Strobe System can be operated in standalone mode. In standalone mode the LED BRIK Strobe System will playback built in patterns. The built in patterns are as follows: PATTERN PATTERN DESCRIPTION 0 OFF: This pattern turns all channels off and keeps them off. 1 Random Blink: This pattern randomly blinks the 16 channels individually. All Blink: This pattern blinks all 16 channels simultaneously at a rate of about one 2 blink per second. Zipper Fast Blink: This pattern quickly strobe flashes each channel from channel 1 3 to channel 16. Zipper Slow Blink: This pattern blinks each channel for 0.5 seconds from channel 1 4 to channel 16. Zipper with Intensity Change: This pattern zippers through all the LEDs but ramps 5 the intensity of each channel from min to max as it cycles. Intensity Slide: This pattern increases the intensity of ALL the LEDs simultaneously 6 from min to max. Zipper with Intensity Change: This pattern zippers through all the LEDs while ramping the intensity for each cycle. 7 Cycles through the 16 channels at the minimum intensity Increases the intensity and cycles again Eventually it will reach maximum intensity.
