2 EDITORIAL Dear customers and business partners of Schrack Seconet AG, The classical age pyramid is a thing of the past. It has developed towards a deltoid and someday soon it might even stand on its head, thus illustrating the demographic change. Business with the older generation is booming. Some years ago, the generation 50+ was of only little importance to the advertising sector. Recently however, these people have come to be recognized as potent consumers who want to spend their money. They like to travel, go shopping, they prefer elegance and quality, in short: they want to enjoy their lives. And a great number of senior citizens can afford to give up the organizational responsibility of living in their own houses and flats and move into a senior citizens residence. However, the increase in life expectancy sometimes brings about the problem of frailty, and, consequently, the need for care by third parties also increases. And even in this field a lot has changed during the past years. Operators of nursing homes have been faced with a rising demand and have modified their services accordingly. In this issue of Fire & Care we will deal with interesting demographic facts and figures as well as with the branch of business active in this sector and the services offered. Schrack Seconet has equipped several nursing homes in Austria and abroad with its communication systems. With these systems it can be ensured that people in need of care will be able to meet their needs of security, communication and information as well. And we have developed something special for our fire alarm systems, which are based on IP-technology: In future, the control panel can be mapped also to smartphones by means of IP or Android technology. In this way we can provide information even faster and in line with the needs of our time and thus reduce response times. Yours, Accurate and fast detection in all kinds of environmental conditions The reliable detection of fires in extreme environmental conditions, such as heat, frost or humidity, places the highest demands on technology. The new multi-point heat detector HeatSCREEN MHD 535 is particularly suited for use in such areas. In temperature ranges between 40 C and +85 C it works equally reliably as in relative humidity of 100%. A great number of highly-sensitive sensors are installed in the interior of the heat measuring cable, detecting conspicuous rises in temperature and increase of infrared radiation extremely fast. The freely selectable distance between the sensors is between 2 and 20 meters, the response behaviour of every single sensor can be programmed individually. In this way alarms can be localized accurately and significant data can be transmitted to the fire alarm panel. The HeatSCREEN MHD 535 reliably protects people and property from the consequences of a fire not only in tunnels. 3 SecoNEWS Information at any time and at any place Technical developments over the past years have made it all come true: We can make telephone calls from practically any place, we can receive messages at any place and we can even access the Internet almost everywhere. A logical result, therefore, was to make use of all these mobility benefits also for fire protection and safety. INFO In addition to Integral MAP, the practical and userfriendly control panel of the fire alarm panel Integral IP, which makes possible multiple and summary operation as well as additional control functions or administration in four languages during live operation, the IP-technology based Integral VirtualMAP has been developed. This innovation allows loading the control panel onto the PC or the laptop of the fire protection officer and access to the fire alarm panel and makes possible data transmission all over the world. VirtualMAP functions both on conventional PC monitors and on touchpads. Now another highlight is available: In order to further increase mobility and to facilitate accessibility, Schrack Seconet is developing access options via UMTS for ipads and iphones. Fast response with Integral VirtualMAP VirtualMAP The control panel is loaded onto the mobile terminal unit and all data can be viewed anytime. This translates in faster response times in case of faults and failures, and operators don t lose time when they have to make important decisions. SecurWATCH based on IP SecurWATCH has taken over important tasks in the fields of nursing and care for the elderly, explains Christian Wimmer, Head of Product Management for Security Systems at Schrack Seconet. This local positioning system (LPS) fulfils protection and security tasks for old people who suffer from dementia and disorientation. A tag or badge fastened to a safety band makes it easy to localize the person wearing it. Of course SecurWATCH may also be used for many other tasks, such as the protection of notebooks or the monitoring of industrial processes. Schrack Seconet now has introduced a new technological development: For the first time SecurWATCH is available based on IP-technology. Consequently, the system can be used with LAN cabling, which means that high licence payments for LON-BUS components are not required anymore. This is a decisive factor, especially for large projects. Any conventional CAT-5 or CAT-6 cabling can be used to transport data securely and fast. It is no longer necessary to provide special cabling. In addition to cost benefits, the new solution also offers technical benefits, as specifically conventional onedoor solutions can be simplified and improved with these new components. Interest in this new development of SecurWATCH is very keen, says Christian Wimmer, who is glad about the positive market feedback. WORLDWIDE 3

4 SecoPROJECT INNOVATION VISOCALL IP adds value to Pakistan hospital In 1985, the Aga Khan University Hospital was opened in Karachi, with more than twelve million inhabitants the largest city of Pakistan. It is a private hospital, owned by Prince Karim Aga Khan, the first hospital in Pakistan that also trains students. The non-profit hospital with 565 beds offers most advanced health standards. In this general hospital about 50,000 patients a year are treated in-house and more than 600,000 are given ambulant care. Medical research is a major focus area of this hospital. The hospital technology is state of the art. And with its multimedia communication platform VISOCALL IP, Schrack Seconet has advanced the Clinical Research Unit of the hospital even further. VISOCALL IP offers the highest security, greatest convenience and faster information sharing between doctors, patients and nursing staff. Fire alarm systems for railways in Levant The fire alarm systems of Schrack Seconet are used in many parts of the world. We have implemented a great number of projects in this area from Eastern Europe, to Arabia and India. Recently also railway stations of the Syrian railways were equipped with fire alarm systems of Schrack Seconet. The Arab Republic of Syria is located in the Middle East and has about 20 million inhabitants. About one third of its economic output derives from agriculture. Mineral oil, textiles and foodstuff are the main export goods of Syria. The capital of the country, Damascus, is one of the world s oldest permanently inhabited cities and is of great importance as a cultural center in the region. The railways have a great Aleppo railway station tradition in Syria and today they connect all parts of the country. And now 36 Integral fire alarm panels protect local railway stations. Via an internal control system the data from the individual systems are transmitted to the head stations and subsequently represented at the main stations. Among others, the railway station in Aleppo is monitored by systems of Schrack Seconet. The city is an important hub between the Mediterranean and Euphrates. The technology and flexibility of Schrack Seconet proved to be a convincing argument in case. Also the transmission options and the multi-sensor detector are highly appreciated in Syria. 4 SECURITY

5 Everything s well in the Delfin Wellness World Since September 2010, Delfin Wellness GmbH has been offering its customers a very special spa landscape. The company s new headquarters was built on an area of 1500 m 2 in Leonding. The costs amounted to some 5 million euros. Delfin Wellness GmbH not only is responsible for individual projects but also plans and installs complete spa systems. With 20 employees the company has become one of the most successful all-in vendors in the spa and recreation sector. The range of products comprises swimming pools, roofing, Jacuzzis, Jacuzzi tubs, steam showers and steam baths, as well as saunas and infrared cabins. In the new company building many products are exhibited, some of them may even be tested, as for instance a spillway pool installed on the generously designed roof-top terrace, where you can enjoy a swim above the roofs of Leonding. Schrack Seconet has installed security and fire alarm systems at Delfin Wellness GmbH on a total area of 1,500 square meters, and has implemented a fire alarm Delfin Wellness in Leonding panel, an Integral IP, an intrusion detection system as well as an escape door control system. The access control and door management system is equipped with an electronic time recording system and is used by employees every day, making possible reliable and accurate processing. All these high tech solutions from Schrack Seconet can be networked by means of IP technology. In this way all spa aficionados may enjoy a taste of their own future oasis in a carefree and safe environment. Fotostudio Meister Eder Fotostudio Meister Eder Rooftop terrace with swimming pool Arnulf Rainer Museum: optimum protection for cultural treasure The Arnulf Rainer Museum in Baden near Vienna offers its visitors insights into the great oeuvre of the artist Arnulf Rainer, who was born in Baden. Already some 60 years ago the now 81-year old artist created works of art winning him high acclaim both on national and international level. That s a good enough reason for dedicating a museum to the worldrenowned artist. For this purpose the former ladies bath at the Josefsplatz in Baden was transformed into an exhibition hall. Every year about 12,500 interested people visit the marble rooms and the former changing rooms, which provide a home to several Rainer exhibitions. The oeuvre of the artist is not only valuable in terms of money but it also is an important cultural treasure. All the more important, then, not to give thieves any chance. 7 SecoCOVER VISOCALL IP SPECIAL SecurWATCH IP Health is a valuable asset. In Austria many billions of euros are spent on people s well-being every year. But when people are getting older they often suffer from one or several handicaps and therefore need a lot of care and nursing. Demographic developments show that Europeans are getting older and older. In Austria life expectancy of women in 2009 was 82.9 years and that of men 77.4 years. This makes professional nursing facilities ever more important. And this is not only due to the higher life expectancy but also to the fact that there are more and more single homes and fewer extended families. Only rarely are relatives actively involved in the care for their grandparents. WORLDWIDE 7

8 In Austria long-term nursing accounted for about 13 percent of health expenditure in 2009, with total health expenditure amounting to 30.3 billion euros. The number of old people s and nursing homes is continuously rising. In 2008, 817 facilities offered spaces for 65,000 people. Already 18 years ago the Austrian government responded to the increasing need for care and provided the option to receive allowances for nursing purposes, an option which has been taken up quite readily. At the end of 2010, more than 420,000 persons received nursing allowances. The sector is also an important employer. In Austria about 18,000 around-theclock nurses take care for the wellbeing of thousands of people, most of them senior citizens. In Europe the share of people of 65+ years in the total population is highest in Italy with 20 percent. On EU average this share is SecurWATCH: friend and helper 16.4 percent. With a share of 17.1 percent, Austria was well above-average already in In 2010 this share was already 17.4 percent. For example, Schrack Seconet has equipped some provincial senior citizens residences and nursing homes in Lower Austria with VISOCALL PLUS over the past years. The homes offer best care and the greatest comfort for their residents and patients last but not least thanks to VISOCALL PLUS. Modern homes that are accessible to handicapped people as well as full day-care make sure that residents and patients are in a safe environment, where they will feel at home. A new project was started in autumn 2010 in Vienna: The restructuring and the building of the annex of the senior citizens residence Rosenberg, which is being transformed into the Innovative residence and nursing home Rosenberg. The outstanding feature of this type of residence is that the apartments can be transformed into nursing facilities whenever the need arises. This ensures that residents may stay in their usual surroundings even if their health deteriorates. In future, Schrack Seconet s VISOCALL IP will be used here. Many senior citizens residences of the Kuratorium for senior citizens residences in Vienna have been equipped with fire alarm and nurse call systems from Schrack Seconet for years and are continuously upgraded. This is the motto of VBÖ Austroalarm, the association of Austrian manufacturers and systems vendors of fire protection equipment. Only manufacturers of complete fire alarm systems are members of VBÖ Austroalarm. High Austrian standards in fire protection Max Strohmeier head of product management at Schrack Seconet Schrack Seconet is a founding member of the association. Max Strohmeier, head of product management at Schrack Seconet, represents the company at VBÖ and is a member of the managing board of this interest group. Fire & Care talked to him about the goals and plans of VBÖ. F&C: VBÖ Austroalarm is an association of manufacturers of fire alarm systems. For many years VBÖ has been active for the continuous increase of quality in preventive fire protection in Austria. What is your approach in this matter? Max Strohmeier: For us it is important to be able to actively participate in the drafting of standards and regulations. As in any other legislative procedure also in the fire alarm sector experts are asked for their advice and comments. Therefore we delegate our experts to committees and associations. For example, we have delegates in the Technical Committee of the Austrian Standards Institute and we are active in VBCert, the association for the promotion of uniform standards in preventive fire protection. This accredited certification authority grants certificates and thus authorizations for companies which design, install, commission and maintain fire alarm systems. These authorities are of utmost importance and necessary to uphold the principles of safety and security in our business. We are also closely cooperating with the inspection authorities of the Austrian Federal Fire Brigade Federation and the fire protection authorities to keep up the high level of quality of standards and regulations that we have achieved during the past years. F&C: Is there also an international dimension to VBÖ s activities? Max Strohmeier: Of course it is our intention to promote our high Austrian standards also on an international level. Therefore we are participating in European standardization activities in the framework of CEN. In addition, the VBÖ is also a member of Euralarm, the umbrella organization of European manufacturers and installers of fire alarm and security systems. 10 SECURITY

11 F&C: What do you think VBÖ Austroalarm can do for quality assurance apart from the participation in standardization activities? Max Strohmeier: We organize workshops and symposia on a regular basis where quality issues are discussed and the awareness of preventive fire protection and extinguishing systems is deepened. It is also very important for us to look closely into current developments of our business and to deal with changed requirements and demands of the customers of our members. Recently, therefore, we installed a special expert group for extinguishing systems at VBÖ Austroalarm to expand our activities also in this direction. F&C: This means you are open for new solutions. Max Strohmeier: We consider VBÖ Austroalarm also as a discussion platform for sharing experiences and balancing interests. After all, we are the first point of contact for the fire prevention authority and the fire brigades whenever they have requests to the industry in the field of preventive fire protection. F&C: You have already mentioned the high Austrian level in the field of preventive fire protection. What is Austria s position in this field as compared to international standards? Max Strohmeier: Unfortunately international standards are quite inhomogeneous. The EU Services Directive permits international services in Europe, which may have negative consequences. A lot of European installers of fire protection systems do not meet Central European standards. Our focus is always on absolute quality and the highest safety and security. F&C: How can there be different standards in such an important field as protection and security? Max Strohmeier: In Central Europe the focus is always on earliest possible detection. Earliest possible detection is important for protecting lives and property. In countries that have adopted the Anglo-American philosophy of fire protection it is always fire alarm and evacuation measures that are in focus. Of course this approach is quite different The Association of Austrian manufacturers of fire alarm systems was founded in 1972 by the leading companies in the fire protection industry. Under the motto No security without knowledge VBÖ Austroalarm is active in sharing experiences with the industry, the standardization committees and associations as well as the clarification of all issues of preventive fire and therefore other standards and quality regulations are called for. However, this means that also the requirements on the systems are different. F&C: What plans do you at the VBÖ have for the future? Close Max Strohmeier: We want cooperation with to keep raising the awareness Germany and for the importance of Switzerland preventive fire protection in Austria but also throughout Europe. For this purpose we will intensify our cooperation with the umbrella organizations in Germany and Switzerland, which has been very good so far, in order to strengthen our position in Central Europe even further. It is specifically our market that is strongly determined by standards and regulations. The VBÖ is an institution that plays an essential role in this field. protection. Moreover, it is a major concern of VBÖ to create and raise the awareness for technological and regulative developments in fire alarm systems in all players on the market. T SecoCareNET Networked hospital communication he communication system Seco CareNET is based on IP-technology and sets new standards in the health sector. IP is the basis of the Internet. It is an open technology and provides the platform for all communication tasks. SecoCareNET combines the four big issues of the health sector communication, information, security and efficiency all under one roof. With the use of the Internet Protocol all relevant components of hospital communication, such as telephones for staff and patients, nurse-call, communication with the nursing staff, internet access, IP TV and radio, as well as other services are bundled into one system.
