4 Accelerated Weathering Test Methods of Automotive Nonmetal Components and Materials Using a Xenon-Arc Apparatus 1 Scope This Standard specifies the accelerated weathering test methods and evaluation methods of automotive nonmetal components and materials using irradiance-controlled xenon-arc apparatus.. This Standard is applicable to the automotive nonmetal components and materials, such as plastics, rubber, textiles, leather, adhesives, coatings and etc.. 2 Normative References The following documents are essential to the application of this document. 5 3.7 Test specimen It is used to expose the test specimen. 3.8 File specimen Specimen, stored under stable conditions, that has not undertaken the exposure test; it is used to compare the changes of performance before and after the exposing period. 3.9 Reference material A performance-known material, which is used to monitor whether the xenon lamp runs properly. 4 Test Equipment 4.1 Test equipment takes xenon lamp as radiation source. Test specimen is installed within the test chamber; it shall ensure the consistence of test condition of test specimen. The test equipment shall, through certain method, automatically control the irradiance, black panel temperature/black standard temperature, air temperature of the chamber, and the relative humidity within the chamber. Before the test, both parties of test shall agree on the test equipment s manufacturer and test equipment s model. Detailed reference of the test equipment shall refer to GB/T Equipment s manufacturer is responsible for the equipment approval, providing test equipment s key parameter indicators, including the spectral power distribution (SPD) etc. It shall adopt some recognized standard reference materials to conduct verification test against the test equipment, such as polystyrene light-resistant standard materials, AATCC L4 blue wool standard fabrics. Equipment s manufacturer shall provide some necessary data to prove the comparability of test results against different models of equipment; which shall at least include 250nm~800nm relative spectral energy distribution, as well as the data on the repeatability and reproducibility of the standard reference materials. Both parties of test shall, before the test, shall confirm the equipment s model. NOTE: In the daily test, different equipment may generate different test results; the test results depend on the characteristics of test sample and design of test equipment. 4.3 Unless otherwise agreed by both parties of the test, the test equipment shall be installed with black panel thermometer or black standard thermometer. 4.4 Test equipment shall ensure, at any location in the test specimen exposure area, the irradiance is 70% maximum irradiance in this region at least. 6 GB/T According to the operation instructions of test equipment, expose the test specimen, so that its surface can accept the irradiance uniformly. 7.4 When testing the textile for interior parts, add white cardboard as back lining. As for other types of test specimen except for the textile, if their dimensions are smaller than the specimen holder, then add white cardboard as the back lining. 7.5 To maintain the consistence of test condition, all vacancies on the specimen holder shall apply inert, non-reflective plate (such as white cardboard) to fill; if the plate generates obvious deformation, it shall be replaced. 7.6 Different test specimens that have mutual effects towards the test results shall not be installed within the same test chamber to test at the same time. 7.7 Select test method; set each test required radiant or time. It is suggested, during the test period, to apply the reference materials to compare at the same time. 7.8 During the test period, regularly change the test specimen s position, so that further improve the consistence of the test. If it is specially required, both parties of the test shall agree on the changing mode of test specimen. NOTE: Additional operation of test equipment, such as, during the test period open the test chamber to inspect test specimen, may lead to the deviation of test results. 8 Result and Evaluation 8.1 Evaluation of degree of discoloration Instrument measurement Use instrument to measure the test specimen s color values in CIE LAB color space before test and after accept certain radiant; calculate color difference; the measuring process can refer to Appendix B Visual observation method According to AATCC Evaluation Procedure , apply AATCC grey card to evaluate the colorfastness Under the measuring condition given in AATCC Evaluation Procedure , the degree of discoloration is described in the following terms: a) No change test specimen has no change on hue, lightness and saturation; b) Minor change conduct close-distance observation against the test specimen, it Page 10 of 19

7 Appendix A (Normative) Maintenance, Replacement and Calibration of Test Equipment A.1 Maintenance A1.1 To obtain the best test result, clean the test equipment regularly. Generally, the cleaning frequency mainly depends on test water quality, instrument air quality, and lab air quality. A.1.2 Cleaning steps shall refer to the use instructions of equipment, the following parts shall be particularly concerned. --- Test chamber; --- Xenon lamp filter; --- Optical components; --- Black panel thermometer or black standard thermometer; --- Xenon lamp pipe. A.1.3 Regularly check the nozzle blockage. If blockage occurs frequently, during the equipment water supplying period, the additional filter is required to install. Follow the manufacturer s recommendation, replace the nozzle. A.1.4 According to the equipment requirements, maintain the humidity control system. A.1.5 Check the running state of equipment everyday, so as to ensure each test parameters conform to the regulated requirements, and ensure them accurate. A.2 Replacement A.2.1 Consumptive materials shall be replaced in strict accordance with equipment requirements; pay attention to the following components: xenon lamp pipe, light filter, optical components. When the stipulated irradiance can t be reached or components generate obvious changes, such as discoloration of light filter, increasing of lamp pipe s opacity, then the xenon lamp pipe and (or) filter need replacing. A.2.2 According to equipment requirements, regularly replace the black panel thermometer or black standard thermometer. Timely replace the black panel thermometer or black standard thermometer, when they lose luster or the bottom Page 12 of 19

8 Appendix B (Normative) Evaluation Method of Light-Resistant Colour Fastness B.1 Principle This Appendix applies AATCC L4 blue wool fabric as the reference fabric; use color difference meter to measure the reference fabrics color value in CIE LAB space before test and after accepting certain radiant; and calculate the color differenceδe*, so that verify whether the test equipment runs normally, or is used for the comparison test between different equipment. B.2 Operation procedure B.2.1 Use white cardboard as the back lining of to-be-measured reference fabric; place the reference fabric and white cardboard into the standard environment (temperature is 23 C±2 C, relative humidity is 50%±10%) for at least 2h. Before measurement, insert a layer of unexposed similar reference fabric between reference fabric and white cardboard. B.2.2 Use the flat part of reference fabric as the measuring area. When measuring, color difference meter shall get close to the measuring area; record, under D65 light source/10, the observation angle s actual measured value of color. B.2.3 After the first-time measurement, rotate the reference fabrics about 90, and then conduct the second-time measurement; take the mean measurement value of the two measurements as the initial color vale of reference fabric. After measurement, take out the fabrics used as intercalation, then place it into the sealed container for backup. NOTE: Reference fabric is sensitive to light. The reference fabric used as the intercalation shall be replaced after using 50 times or appearing obvious color change. B.2.4 Fix the reference fabric taking white color cardboard as back lining on the specimen holder; then place it firmly and close to the specimen holder of black panel thermometer (black standard thermometer); the reference fabric shall face the light source. B.2.5 After the test reaches the setting radiant, take out reference fabric and white cardboard as back lining; place it in the standard environment (temperature is 23 C±2 C, relative humidity is 50%±10%) for 1h at least. B.2.6 Repeat the operation steps in B.2.1 to B.2.2; measure the color of post-test Page 14 of 19

9 Appendix C (Normative) Use of Polystyrene Light-Resistant Standard Materials C.1 Principle C.1.1 This Appendix describe the method using polystyrene light-resistant standard materials as the reference material, and monitoring the xenon lamp test device. C.1.2 Use color difference meter to measure the reference material s yellowness index Δb* in the CIE LAB color space before and after receiving certain radiant. C.2 Operation procedure C.2.1 Color difference meter can meet certain requirements, such as mirror element, D65 light source, 10 observation angle; can provide CIE LAB color value. During test period, according to the test specimen surface situation, select transmission or reflection mode, the specific color measurement steps can refer to the instructions of reference color difference meter. C.2.2 Measure the reference material s initial color value. C.2.3 Install the reference material on the specimen holder, make it close to the black panel thermometer or black standard thermometer. C.2.4 After reaching the monitoring radiant, take out reference material out of the equipment. C.2.5 In the reference material s exposing area, measure the color value, and calculate the yellowness index Δb*. C.2.6 Compare Δb* with reference material s corresponding standard Δb*. NOTE: The supplier of polystyrene standard material shall provide standard chart for the buyer C.2.7 If Δb* is not within the predetermined value, operate as per the Step C.2.8. C.2.8 After each calibration, expose certain radiant of polystyrene standard material. If the reference material s data is not within the predetermined range; expose the other block of polystyrene standard material at the shortest time interval. If the polystyrene reference material s data is still not within the predetermined range, stop the test till the problem is solved. C.2.9 The purpose of using polystyrene is to monitor the test procedure; it belongs to Page 16 of 19
