Foreword This South African standard was approved by National Committee SABS/TC 064, Lighting and optics, in accordance with procedures of the SABS Standards Division, in compliance with annex 3 of the WTO/TBT agreement. This document was approved for publication in December This document supersedes SANS :2011 (edition 3.6). A vertical line in the margin shows where the text has been technically modified by amendment No. 7. This standard is referenced in the Regulations of the Local Government: Municipal Systems Act, 2000 (Act No. 32 of 2000), the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996 (Act No. 108 of 1996), the Water Services Act, 1997 (Act No. 108 of 1997), and the National Building Regulations and Building Standards Act, 1977 (Act No. 103 of 1977). 5 Symbolic safety signs Part 1: Standard signs and general requirements 1 Scope 1.1 This part of SANS 1186 specifies requirements for standard ordinary (non-reflective) symbolic safety signs, including signs on vinyl sheets (decals). This part of SANS 1186 also specifies general requirements applicable to self-luminous (radioluminescent), internally illuminated, retro-reflective and photoluminescent symbolic safety signs (complete with their backing sheets, where applicable). 1.2 This standard does not cover road signs.
