Functions and solutions xcomfort is a wireless control system for the electronic equipment in your house, which gives the house smarter functions, greater security and increased comfort. The xcomfort system can be used for anything from updating existing installations or extending, renewing and improving them, to setting up completely new installations. You can start small, with simple and practical functions, and expand later as the need or desire arises. Do you need an extra light switch in the hall, or at both the top and bottom of the stairs? These are standard tasks that xcomfort carries out every day, with absolutely no visible cables. 3 Control your house from the other side of the world Odd Atle Strømland is one of many people who have installed xcomfort, a system that gives you full remote control of anything electronic in your home. Wireless light switches, dimmers and thermostats can be placed anywhere in the house, without having to rely on any cables. We focused on controlling the lights and central heating. All the light switches are wireless and we can put them wherever we like, says Strømland. He lives in a house in Kolbotn with his wife and three children. The detached house covers roughly 330 square metres and is two storeys high. When you live in a big house, having an xcomfort system installed is extremely practical. The house is divided into zones, and these settings mean we save energy. For example, one of the zones is set up so that the light always comes on at 70 percent of full brightness, says Strømland. Master switch gives full control The system also does away with unsightly cables, as all the switches are wireless. The xcomfort system has time-switches that can start and stop various electronic devices. That means you can wake up to a pot of freshly brewed coffee every morning, or make sure your clothes finish washing just as you get home. Connecting devices like coffee-makers to a time-switch also provides extra security, by turning off the power if you forget to do it yourself. We have a master switch by the entrance, which lets you switch off all the lights in the house with a single click. When we come back in, it only turns on the light we have programmed in advance to switch on, says Strømland. He is very happy with the light system, but also emphasizes that the xcomfort system controls the central heating throughout the house, including in the studio they rent out. We have a wireless thermostat that makes sure the temperature is always optimal in every room in the house, says Strømland. xcomfort can also be set up so that the heating switches off when a window is opened, and back on again when it is closed. Control from your phone or by SMS If you re away from home, you can control your devices through a smartphone or by SMS and receive a report containing important information on the temperature both indoors and outdoors. You can also switch systems like your heating, lights and alarm off and on. If something happens say there s a leak, the temperature in the freezer increases or the alarm goes off you can see the details right on your mobile phone. 3

4 A sea of possibilities xcomfort With xcomfort installed in the house, you have access to all the technical equipment inside through various different user interfaces, such Eaton is showing in the picture above. Standard solution You buy xcomfort from your local electrician. The electrician sets up a solution with the desired light and heating control, and the associated timeswitches. The system can also be extended to include blinds and security cameras. Extended solution If you want to extend the system, then the TV, radio, amplifiers, set-top boxes, doors, garage doors and more can also be controlled through the remote. All the remote controls in the house can be reduced down to one, meaning that you can switch everything off with a single button press. If you want to reduce your energy consumption, you can implement maximum power monitors, automatic over-consumption alerts and presence sensors, as well as the built-in time-switches. 4

5 Light control Soft lighting creates the right atmosphere. A single button press, and the lighting is just the way you want it. Then you can bring up the dining-room light, the TV light or the reading light instead, to adjust each individual set of lamps. Simple, functional and smart! In a country where it gets dark early in the evening several months a year, lighting is not only an essential but also an ambience-creating factor. In some countries it is nothing unusual to use light as part of the furnishing. And dimming has almost become a natural thing to do. A few good light control solutions: Several groups of lights in the room, each of which can be dimmed to a desired level. Different light settings create the right atmosphere. Buttons, remote controls or a touch button on a smartphone that call up the desired light settings. A control button in the handiest place right by the armchair or under the dinner tabletop. A night light that casts a dim light from the bedroom and into the bathroom, and turns itself off when you are finished there. Shared switches by the exit and on the bedside table that switch off all the lights. Motion sensors that turn lights on and off, such as in the bathroom, the storeroom or the cellar. Lights that turn themselves on with various alarms. 5

6 Heat control Temperature is an important factor for well-being. Controlling the heating is not only sensible, it also shapes your mood. Taking care to lower the temperature in rooms that are not in use is a good way to reduce the building s heating costs. With xcomfort, this can be put into practice in both existing buildings and new builds. Heating your home is important in an European climat. On the other hand, lack of resources, energy costs and environmental consciousness mean that we need to manage our energy consumption carefully. xcomfort can help you to do just that! Controlling your heating can have many advantages. First and foremost, it makes sure the temperature is comfortable when you want and need it to be. What s more, the control can stop you from pouring money down the drain by spending money on energy you are not using. xcomfort can be used to control either electric or water-circulation central heating. Functions like automatic night-time reduction and energy-saving programmes for extended absence are obvious solutions. Each room or heating zone can have its own temperature profile, tailored to the room s daily usage patterns. Components used in heating control solutions: Actuators that control heat sources like electric heaters, heating cables, radiator valves or valves for water-circulation floor heating, and more. Thermostats or temperature sensors to measure room or outside temperature. Sensors that detect if a a window in the room is open so that the heat supply can be cut off. A local override option to change the desired temperature or set the heating to stay on for longer than specified by the timer. Frost protection so that the water in the pipes does not freeze on its own when you are away. 7 Security Many people have had the experience of being unsure if they turned off the iron or the coffee maker when they left the house. Don t let concerns like that spoil your holiday. The fact that xcomfort is wireless itself brings unimagined possibilities for its use. Among other advantages, the system provides the opportunity for a functional and sensible security solution. What if the lights went on in all the bedrooms and escape routes if the fire alarm went off? The power to the coffee maker and iron can switch itself off when you leave the house. The same goes for the stove. If you have access to xcomfort control, you can also check and, if necessary, switch off equipment from wherever you might be. Solutions for better security at home: Actuators that control the outputs of common fire hazards like irons, coffee makers and stoves. Smoke detectors that turn on the lights in the bedrooms and all hallways when activated. Motion sensors that turn the light on when you re at home, but can be used to set off an alarm if they detect any movement when the house is in away mode. Alert functions that attract attention and intimidate intruders. Alert functions that let you know if a sensor is not receiving enough power. An alarm button by the bedside table that you can use to turn on all the lights in the house if you hear unfamiliar sounds. The same motion sensors that turn the light on when you move in the house can be used to set off an alarm if they detect any movement when you re away. xcomfort lets you coordinate different parts of the installation and use the same sensor for different tasks under certain conditions. 7

8 Solar shading Even though rainy summers might make us think otherwise, the sun is the number one source of the heat we need. On hot summer s days, though, it can be too much of a good thing! Strong sunlight can make it uncomfortable to be indoors, so we are happy to implement measures to stop it from getting too hot. Awnings and blinds are common physical means of providing shade from the sun. Cooling systems can also regulate the temperature, but they have some undesirable effects such as high energy consumption. Awnings and blinds are therefore preferable in many cases. Automatically deployed awnings and blinds take care of providing shade when the sun shines in and affects the inside temperature. When the sun goes down or light levels are low, they retract again automatically. It is also possible to include safety functions that retract the awnings in the event of strong winds, or if it suddenly starts to rain. Suggested solar shading solutions: Actuators that control one or more sets of awnings or blinds. Push-buttons, remote controls or smartphones that operate awnings and blinds manually. Wind and rain sensors that retract awnings or blinds in bad weather. Time-switch functions from a shared control unit that closes and opens the blinds at specified times. xcomfort can control solar shading effectively and securely. That way, you can avoid using up energy on cooling. xcomfort can also be used to control cooling systems. 8

9 Saving energy Because xcomfort is a wireless solution, the solutions can be installed and used in existing buildings without having to carry out extensive and costly alterations to the building. In other words, it s easy to implement functions that reduce heating and energy consumption when they re not needed, but that still make sure it s comfortable when you want it to be. Managing your heating sensibly is one of the measures that will give the fastest results. There are many examples of how energy consumption is reduced through smart management. By using an xcomfort control system in a normal house with electricity as its main source of heating, you can expect a saving of 20-30% in the electricity used for heating. There is no need for extensive installations or alterations to achieve this. It doesn t matter what heat source is used either. xcomfort can tackle most things, and the system can be used to control both water-circulation and electrical heating. 11 Wireless communication everywhere With xcomfort you get full access to wireless control of your house wherever you are. It makes no difference whether you re at home or travelling. You use the same user interface anywhere. The Smart Home Controller connects the xcomfort- System and the WLAN-Router of the home network. The Smart Home Controller stores and contains all information for controlling xcomfort. Local network The xcomfort products are communicting wireless to each other and also to the Smart Home Controller. The communication between Smart Home Controller & Router is done wireless via WLAN to the smartphone - where the APP is installed. The APP is used for visualization and control. Internet or phone The xcomfort system from Eaton can be controlled from anywhere. If you re at home, you control the system directly through your home network. If you re away, you still have full control through the internet or on your iphone via Eaton Server. 11
