7 ARRESTER SYSTEMS Safety First Reliable Protection It is a legal requirement that fire doors be kept closed at all times. This is important because fire doors are an effective way of preventing the spread of dangerous smoke and fumes from a fire. On the other hand, you need barrier-free passageways for unhindered movement of persons and efficient work processes, for example in hotels, kindergartens, hospitals and business premises. Two Requirements, One Solution How can these two conflicting requirements be met? With arrester systems from effeff. The principle is simple but extremely effective. Each fire door is fitted with a door closer and a arrester device. Normally, the arrester device, an electromagnet, holds the door open. Visitors can pass unhindered, and business operations are not hampered by the continual opening and closing of the doors. Smoke detectors monitor the critical zones. When danger threatens, the smoke detectors fully automatically detect even the slightest concentrations of smoke or fumes day or night, even at weekends and outside working hours. They immediately send a message to the smoke protection switch. This interrupts the current supply to the electromagnet, and the door closer closes the door automatically, without outside intervention. This effectively prevents the spreading of the highly toxic smoke and fumes. If there are still people in the area of the fire, they can escape by the doors, the door closer reliably ensuring that the doors are again closed tightly against the smoke after each person has passed. The Complete System effeff offers all the components needed for a functioning system: smoke detectors, smoke protection switches, magnets and counter holding plates, and interruptor pushbutton. All the elements in this system are harmonised with each other and carefully tested. This guarantees reliable functioning and a long, uncomplicated lifetime. For reliable protection of persons and property. 7

Mains connection 230 V Fire and smoke doors, smoke flaps and similar installations are legally required fire barriers. In case of a fire, they prevent toxic fumes, smoke and flames from spreading through openings in walls and ceilings. This protects people and preserves the value of property. Fire barriers must be kept closed at all times. Output for external signals The disadvantage: Closed doors hamper the movement of persons and goods. The danger: The fire barriers are kept open by wedges or something of the sort. In case of fire, the barriers can no longer serve their purpose, and lives are endangered. Magnet cable, 2-core Input smoke detectors, 2-core 8 The solution: effeff arrester systems hold fire barriers open. Persons and goods can pass freely. When danger threatens, that is, when a fire is only just starting, the fire barriers are closed reliably. Their protective function takes over reliably. Output smoke detectors, 2-core The Functional Principle Fire barriers must be self-closing. However, to allow persons and goods to pass unhindered, the barriers are normally kept open by arrester systems. Should a fire start, the smoke detectors detect the increased concentration of smoke and fumes. The doors are released, and close automatically. Terminator resistance 2.4 kω The fire barriers are normally held open by magnets. Persons and goods can move unhindered. Should a fire start, the magnets are switched off and the fire barriers close. Persons who are in the room can flee safely. The fire sections are closed off. The escape routes remain free of smoke.
9 Rauchmelder Rückstellung Tür freigeben Betrieb Auslösung COMPONENTS The Components Arrester systems for fire barriers always consist of several components: The arrester devices (magnets), which normally hold the doors open. In the case of an alarm, or when triggered manually, they release the doors. Planning and Installation of Arrester Systems Arrester systems for fire doors must have a general certificate from the inspector of works. Effeff arrester systems are licensed by the Deutsche Institut für Bautechnik (DIBt, German Institute for building technology). They hold the system licence Z The smoke detectors, which are mainly installed in the form of optical smoke detectors. They monitor the concentration of smoke and fumes in the room. If this concentration increases, they put the fire alarm box in alarm mode. Another method is to monitor the room temperature. Heat sensors are used for this purpose. If the room temperature rises quickly, or exceeds 58 C, the alarm boxes go into alarm mode. The smoke protection switch, the central power supply and distribution unit in the system. The signals from the smoke detectors arrive here and are evaluated. In case of an alarm, or if the integrated trigger switch is actuated, the smoke protection switch switches the magnets off. The doors can now close securely, thus shutting off the rest of the building. The manual triggering buttons, mounted immediately next to the doors to allow them to be closed manually. When this button is pressed, the electrical circuit to the magnets is interrupted, and the door is closed V AC 3 2 Smoke Rauchschutzschalter protection switch Manual triggering Hand- Auslösetaster button Smoke Brandmelder detector Feststelleinrichtung Arrester device (z.b. 10 SMOKE PROTECTION SWITCH 10 Central Power Supply and Processing Unit The smoke protection switch accommodates the mains adapter for the power supply of the entire arrester system and the evaluation electronics. At the core of the system, the smoke protection switch evaluates the incoming signals from the smoke detectors. If the signals indicate too high a concentration of smoke and fumes, or too high a temperature, the smoke protection switch interrupts the supply of electric current to the magnets. The fire doors close, preventing the further spread of smoke and fire to the next section of the building. 12 SMOKE DETECTORS Which smoke detector for which room? The system licence permits the use of two types of smoke detectors in effeff arrester systems: Optical smoke detector Model Heat sensitive, thermo-differential detector Model Which type of detector you should use depends on the probable source and development of a fire. Almost all fires start with a smouldering phase. Long before a blaze starts, the fire is detectable by the presence of smoke and fumes. In locking systems for fire barriers, optical smoke detectors are used almost exclusively, because they can detect smoke and fume particles in the air reliably. 12 Use heat sensors only in exceptional cases in: Rooms in which dust, smoke, steam or aerosols occur, because here the smoke detectors could trigger even under normal operating conditions. Examples: woodworking, kitchens, etc. Rooms in which a fire could start without a smouldering phase, or with only a short one. Examples: ignition of solvent fumes, fluids, etc. Tip: Smoke detector rather than heat sensor Give the use of smoke detectors the priority. In the case of arrester systems for barriers in escape routes and for smoke doors, smoke detectors are compulsory.
13 TECHNICAL DATA Optical Smoke Detector Heat Sensitive, Thermo-differential Detector With pedestal and LED display for individual identification. For connection to smoke protection switches Model : Optical smoke detectors work on the principle of diffused light With pedestal and LED display for individual identification. For connection to smoke protection switch. The thermo-differential detector serves to detect fires that cause a rapid rise in temperature. It works on the principle of rise in temperature within specific unit of time and the threshold temperature value. According to EN 54, Part 5, Class 1 with a threshold temperature of 58 C. 14 SMOKE DETECTORS Function Optical smoke detectors work on the principle of diffused light. The interior of the smoke detector forms a labyrinth, so that no external light can penetrate it. The pulsed measuring light beam is reflected by any smoke that has entered, and falls on the light-sensitive element. Here, the incidence of light causes the current to increase. When the threshold value is exceeded, smoke is recognised and the alarm signal is triggered. Photo transmitter LED Smoke in the measuring chamber Optical smoke detectors react very promptly, especially in the case of smouldering fires with large, light-coloured smoke particles. Their advantage lies in the prompt reaction to smouldering plastics, blazing plastics and smoking, burning fluids. Labyrinth Photo receiver Reflection Alarm signal Installation with Wall Openings 14 Monitoring Range of smoke detectors Usually, several smoke detectors are needed to provide optimum monitoring. Smoke detectors have a limited monitoring range of up to 4 metres in diameter. When reading the following explanations, bear in mind that the entire width of the opening must always be monitored. In the case of openings wider than 4 metres, or by very high ceilings, you must install correspondingly more boxes. Is the door a rotating door? What is the distance between the top of the doorway and the ceiling on one or both sides? Up to 1m Yes No Greater than 1m Number of smoke detectors The required number of smoke detectors and their correct mounting depend on structural criteria of the building. The following diagram shows a simple way to determine the minimum required number: How wide is the doorway? Up to 3m Greater than 3m 1 Lintel box Min. 2 boxes (one ceiling box each side) Min. 3 boxes (one ceiling box each side and one lintel box on one side)
15 MOUNTING AND INSTALLATION Mounting Dimensions and Prescribed Distances 1 2 The distance between the top of the doorway and the ceiling is up to 1 metre, and the door had turning leaves with an opening of up to 3 metres. max. 3 m max. 1 m max. 0,1 m You need at least one lintel detector on one side or the other. Always mount the lintel detector in a vertical position. If necessary, use the mounting bracket, It is best to mount the lintel box in the centre, directly above the opening and a maximum of 0.1 meters from the top of the doorway. The distance between the top of the doorway and the ceiling is up to one metre, the door is a sliding or roller gate, or a turning door with an opening more than 3 metres wide. 1 2 max. 1 m min. 0,5 m 15 You need at least 2 detectors, i.e. one ceiling detector each side. Always mount the ceiling detectors on the ceiling that is fire-protection classified, i.e. on the first seamless, smoke-proof ceiling. At any rate, however, install it where the highest concentration of smoke and fumes is to be expected first. Always mount the box vertically above the opening in the wall. The distance between the opening and the wall must be at least 0.5 metres and must not exceed 2.5 metres. more than 3 m min. 0,5 m max. 2,5 m max. 2,5 m Note! In the case of openings wider than 4 metres, you must install correspondingly more smoke detectors. Note! Non-licensed detectors and detectors that are mounted differently or in different areas from those described above, can be attached, but do not count as effective smoke detectors as defined in the DIBt memos.
16 SMOKE DETECTORS The distance between the top of the doorway and the ceiling is greater than 1 metre. The type of door does not matter. 1 2 You need at least 3 detectors, i.e. one ceiling detector on each side and one lintel detector on one side. Always mount the lintel detector upright. If necessary, use the mounting bracket, It is best to mount the lintel detector in the centre, directly above the opening and not more than 0.1 metres away from the top of the doorway. Always mount the ceiling detectors on the ceiling that is fire-protection classified, i.e. on the first seamless, smoke-proof ceiling. At any rate, however, install it where the highest concentration of smoke and fumes is to be expected first. Always mount the detector vertically above the opening in the wall. The distance between the opening and the wall must be at least 0.5 metres and must not exceed 2.5 metres. greater than 1 m max. 0,1 m min. 0,5 m max. 2,5 m 16 The distance between the top of the doorway and the ceiling is greater than 5 metres. 1 2 You need at least 3 detectors, i.e. one ceiling detector on each side and one lintel detector on one side. The ceiling detectors may be mounted on brackets 0.5 metres long. You must affix these brackets at least 3.5 metres above the top of the doorway. The regulations for the lintel detectors still apply. Always mount the lintel detector upright. If necessary, use the mounting bracket, It is best to mount the lintel detector in the centre, directly above the opening and not more than 0.1 metres away from the top of the doorway. greater than 5 m max. 0,1 m 0,5 m 0,5 m min. 3,5 m Note! In the case of openings wider than 4 metres, you must install correspondingly more smoke detectors. Note! Non-licensed detector and detector that are mounted differently or in different areas from those described above, can be attached, but do not count as effective alarm boxes as defined in the DIBt memos.
17 MOUNTING AND INSTALLATION Installation With Openings in Ceilings 3 There are special regulations concerning openings in ceilings: Mount at least one smoke detector on the ceiling of each storey. The boxes must not be more than 0.5 metres from the edge of the opening in the ceiling. Assume a maximum monitoring radius of 2 metres for the smoke detectors. In the case of larger openings, install several detectors in such a way that the entire cross-section of the opening is monitored. At the upper end of the ceiling opening you must mount a detector over the centre of the opening. 2 1 max. 0,5 m Monitoring radius max. 2,5 m max. 0,5 m max. 0,5 m Installation in through-going shafts (e.g. lift shafts) 17 In through-going shafts, the same regulations as for wall openings apply, with the following additions: 2 Install an additional ceiling detector in the centre of the ceiling of the shaft. When an smoke detector is triggered, at least the barriers on the same floor and on the floors above must close. max. 0,1 m 1 min. 0,5 m max. 2,5 m When the upper ceiling detector is triggered, all the barriers associated with the shaft must close.
18 ARRESTER DEVICES Holding Magnets The comprehensive range of effeff magnets covers all types of application. Whether for mounting on the wall or the floor with appropriate spacers effeff is your competent partner, world wide. Use of door closers with integrated arrester devices instead of magnets is permissible only when they have system approval. Magnets with Diodes Magnets for integration in fire alarm systems and other electrical systems can be supplied with a built-in recovery and polarity reversal protection diode. Order supplement... with diode 18 Magnets and Counter Holding Plates Are made of special magnetic soft iron. This ensures optimum adhesion with low power consumption and slight residual adhesion. Magnets and counter holding plates must therefore always be ordered together. The surfaces of the magnets and counter holding plates are nickel plated. The magnets may be combined with mounting housings and spacers. Ease of Mounting The counter holding plates are always larger in diameter than the corresponding magnets. This makes it easier to adjust to the magnet when mounting the counter holding plate, because the excess size of the plate takes the mounting tolerances into account.

You can do this by applying coloured markings to the floor and ceiling, or, if this is not practicable, by signs on the fire barriers themselves. There is no prescribed form for these signs. However, to make them conspicuous, we recommend signs roughly 300 mm x 150 mm at least with a red border. Inspection interval Arrester systems for fire barriers must be inspected regularly: After installation in the form of an acceptance test by authorised specialists, Once a month by the operator, and Once a year by authorised specialists. The inspections must be initiated by the operator. Each inspection must be logged. Draw the operator s attention to these inspections. The Acceptance Inspection When a arrester system has been installed ready for operation in the position where it is to be used an acceptance test must be carried out to ensure that it is working properly and has been installed correctly. The manufacturer of the release and locking equipment must point out the need for this inspection. The operator must initiate it. According to DIBt, effeff locking equipment may be acceptance-tested only by: effeff specialists, or Specialists from a recognised test centre, or Specialists who have been authorised by effeff.
27 REGULATIONS AND GUIDELINES The acceptance inspection must include the following points: 1. The units built into the arrester system must be identical with the units specified in the approval certificate. 2. The identification of the installed units must be identical with the identification specified in the approval certificate. 3. The interplay of all the devices must be inspected on the basis of the approval certificate, and must be triggered both by simulating the category of fire for which the smoke detector is designed, and by hand. When the acceptance inspection is complete, the operator must affix the acceptance plate to the wall close to the barrier. Successful acceptance is documented in the acceptance log Routine Monitoring The operator must keep the arrester system ready for operation at all times, and check it for proper functioning at least once a month. 4. The inspection must show whether the barrier is released for automatic closing when the locking system becomes functional (e.g. by removing a smoke detector or by cutting off the power). In addition, the operator is duty bound to have an inspection of the proper, fault-free interplay of all units carried out and maintenance done at least once a year, unless a shorter interval is specified in the approval certificate. Note! Fire barriers are for saving lives! The following points are therefore most important: 1. The fire barriers must be functional. They must move easily and automatically and be able to close without hindrance. They must not be blocked by objects, nor must they scrape on floor, wall or ceiling. 2. The areas around the fire barriers must always be kept clear. Nothing must be set down in them. Objects must not hang into the area of the door. Take care the objects cannot fall into the areas of the barriers. These inspections and maintenance must be carried out only by a specialist or by a person specially trained for the task. Scope, results and date of the regular inspection must be logged. The log entries must be stored by the operator

MAGNETS One of the important elements of the effeff locking devices range is the wide variety of magnets in different shape. Thanks to a low noise mechanism and the comfort of a simple mounting, the magnets are extremely suitable for additional door locking. Moreover, effeff offers high-quality surface magnets. Their modern design fits to harmoniously to the environment. 29 ACCESS CONTROL SYSTEMS Easy solutions for more security! effeff access control systems are designed to protect and control buildings, rooms or high-security areas. Different technologies, devices and systems are available and fitting every specific requirement. effeff access control systems made to our customer s requests and can be used in private, official and industrial areas. ARRESTER SYSTEMS effeff arrester systems secure fire doors that have to be left open during normal use. As soon as smoke is detected, the arrester system mechanism releases the door. The fire doors then close avoiding smoke and fumes spreading to rooms and buildings nearby and restricting the spreading fire as well.
