1 Instruction Manual Series 1650/1660 Gas Detector Sensor CAPITAL CONTROLS
2 These instructions describe the installation, operation and maintenance of the subject equipment. Failure to strictly follow these instructions can lead to an equipment rupture that may cause significant property damage, severe personal injury and even death. If you do not understand these instructions, please call De Nora Water Technologies, Inc. for clarification before commencing any work at and ask for a Field Service Manager. De Nora Water Technologies, Inc. reserves the rights to make engineering refinements that may not be described herein. It is the responsibility of the installer to contact De Nora Water Technologies, Inc. for information that cannot be answered specifically by these instructions. Any customer request to alter or reduce the design safeguards incorporated into De Nora Water Technologies, Inc. equipment is conditioned on the customer absolving De Nora Water Technologies, Inc. from any consequences of such a decision. De Nora Water Technologies, Inc. has developed the recommended installation, operating and maintenance procedures with careful attention to safety. In addition to instruction/operating manuals, all instructions given on labels or attached tags should be followed. Regardless of these efforts, it is not possible to eliminate all hazards from the equipment or foresee every possible hazard that may occur. It is the responsibility of the installer to ensure that the recommended installation instructions are followed. 5 1 INTRODUCTION These instructions cover mounting and wiring of replacement or additional Series 1650 or 1660 Gas Detector sensors, and replacement of a gas sensor element. Affected sensors are BM-5409 (chlorine) and BM-5410 (sulfur dioxide). See Instruction Manual for further information about Series' 1650 or 1660 Gas Detectors. 1.1 Mounting (See to Figure 1) Locate sensor module approximately 12" to 36" (305 mm to 915 mm) from the floor. NOTE : The sensor module may need to be raised if there is constant gas present Position the module with sensor element and cable fitting(s) pointed downward to prevent water entering the enclosure through the fitting(s), resulting in erratic operation Secure the module to the wall with two (2) #8 screws. NOTE: The inside of the module enclosure is sprayed with a copper conductive coating for protection against radio frequency interference (RFI). 1.2 Electrical Connections Refer to Series 1650/1660 Instruction Manual for interconnection diagrams and figures showing location of wiring terminals. WARNING: TURN OFF ALL POWER BEFORE WIRING SENSORS CAUTION: MAXIMUM ALLOWABLE CABLE LENGTH IS 1,000 FEET (305 METERS) NOTE: FOR OUTDOOR LOCATIONS, APPLY SILICON SEALANT TO CABLE CLAMP(S) Figure 1 - Sensor Mounting Dimensions Series 1650/1660 Gas Detector
6 WARNING: TEST SENSOR AT LEAST ONCE A MONTH AND AFTER EXPOSURE TO A GAS LEAK. WHEN A SENSOR S LIFE HAS EXPIRED IT WILL NOT WARN OF A GAS LEAK Series 1650 Single Point Gas Detector Sensor Wiring (See Figure 2) a. Wire sensor using shielded, 3-conductor cable not smaller than 22 gauge. b. Loosen two (2) captive screws and remove lower receiver cover to access wiring terminals c. Loosen four (4) captive screws and remove sensor cover to access wiring terminals. d. Insert cable though the cable clamp and strip ends of each of the three (3) wires. NOTE: Field wiring terminals are located on smaller of two circuit boards. Use one of two terminal blocks provided to wire sensor e. Connect receiver terminal + to sensor field wiring terminal +. f. Connect receiver terminal GND to sensor field wiring terminal G. g. Connect receiver terminal I to sensor field wiring terminal I. h. Connect sensor end of cable shield to sensor field wiring terminal S. i. Connect receiver end of cable shield to receiver GND terminal if not already connected. j. Replace receiver cover and secure with two (2) captive screws. k. Replace sensor cover and secure with four (4) captive screws. CAUTION: INCOMPLETE TIGHTENING OF CABLE CLAMP OR COVER SCREWS CAN ALLOW WATER TO ENTER SENSOR RESULTING IN ERRATIC OPERATION l. Test gas detector operation using Capital Controls Gas Sensor Test Kit, BM-4709 or a convenient source of gas Series 1660 Multipoint Gas Detector Sensor Wiring-Series Connection (See Figure 2) NOTE: Any combination of gas sensor types may be wired in series, and in any order a. Wire sensor using shielded, 3-conductor cable not smaller than 18 gauge. b. If replacing or adding a sensor within a string of sensors, loosen four (4) captive screws and remove covers of two adjoining sensors and additional or replacement sensor to access wiring terminals. c. Remove sensor hole plug and install second cable clamp. d. Use existing cables if replacing a sensor, or add cables when adding an additional sensor. Insert cables from adjoining sensor though cable clamp of new/replacement sensor and strip ends of each of the three (3) wires at the end of each cable. If replacing or adding a sensor to the end of a string of sensors, continue to Step j or k. NOTE: Field wiring terminals are located on smaller of two circuit boards. Use both terminal blocks provided to wire sensor Series 1650/1660 Gas Detector
7 e. Connect terminal + of each existing sensor to separate field wiring terminal + of new/replacement sensor. f. Connect terminal G of each existing sensor to separate field wiring terminal G of new/replacement sensor. g. Connect terminal I of each existing sensor to separate module field wiring terminal I of new/replacement sensor. h. Connect cable shield of each existing sensor to separate field wiring terminal S of the new/replacement sensor. i. Connect receiver end of cable shield to receiver GND terminal if not already connected. Continue on to Step q. j. When replacing last sensor of a string of sensors, loosen four (4) captive screws of sensor to be replaced and replacement sensor, and remove sensor covers. Disconnect and remove last sensor. Insert cable though the cable clamp of replacement sensor. k. When adding a sensor to the end of a string of sensors, loosen four (4) captive screws of last sensor and new sensor, and remove sensor covers. Remove hole plug in last existing sensor and insert a cable of desired length though cable clamp in last existing sensor and new sensor. Strip both ends of each of the three (3) wires. NOTE: Field wiring terminals are located on smaller of two circuit boards. Use one of two terminal blocks provided to wire sensor l. Connect terminal + of existing sensor to field wiring terminal + of new/replacement sensor. m. Connect terminal G of existing sensor to field wiring terminal G of new/replacement sensor. n. Connect terminal I of existing sensor to field wiring terminal I of new/replacement sensor. o. Connect cable shield to field wiring terminal S of new/replacement sensor. If adding a sensor and last existing sensor does not have second circuit board, connect cable shields in existing sensor together. p. Connect receiver end of cable shield to receiver GND terminal if not already connected. q. Tighten any newly installed sensor cable clamp hand tight, then one (1) turn with a wrench. CAUTION: INCOMPLETE TIGHTENING OF CABLE CLAMP OR COVER SCREWS CAN ALLOW WATER TO ENTER SENSOR RESULTING IN ERRATIC OPERATION r. Replace sensor covers and secure with four (4) captive screws. s. Test gas detector operation using Capital Controls Gas Sensor Test Kit, BM-4709 or a convenient source of gas Series 1660 Multipoint Gas Detector Sensor Wiring - Parallel Connection (See Figure 2) When sensors are connected with separate cables, they are wired through a Multipoint Distribution Enclosure which connects sensors to the receiver. The Distribution Enclosure provides connection terminals for up to eight (8) sensors. Series 1650/1660 Gas Detector
8 NOTE: All Gas Sensor Types May Be Connected In Any Order a. Wire sensor using shielded, 3-conductor cable not smaller than 18 gauge. b. Loosen four (4) captive screws and remove Distribution Enclosure and new/replacement sensor covers. c. If replacing a sensor, remove sensor to be replaced. Insert cable though cable clamp of replacement sensor. d. If adding a sensor, remove a hole plug the in Distribution Enclosure and install a cable clamp. Insert a cable of desired length though cable clamp in Distribution Enclosure and new sensor. Strip both ends of each of the three (3) wires. NOTE: Field wiring terminals are located on smaller of two circuit boards. Use one of two terminal blocks provided to wire sensor e. Connect Distribution Enclosure terminal + to sensor field wiring terminal +. f. Connect Distribution Enclosure terminal GND to sensor field wiring terminal G. g. Connect Distribution Enclosure terminal I to sensor field wiring terminal I. h. Connect sensor end of cable shield to sensor field wiring terminal S. i. 9 j. Connect receiver end of cable shield to receiver GND terminal if not already connected. k. Tighten any newly installed cable clamps at Distribution Enclosure and sensor hand tight, then one (1) turn with a wrench. CAUTION: INCOMPLETE TIGHTENING OF CABLE CLAMP OR COVER SCREWS CAN ALLOW WATER TO ENTER SENSOR RESULTING IN ERRATIC OPERATION. l. Replace sensor module cover and secure with four (4) captive screws. m. Test gas detector operation using Capital Controls Gas Sensor Test Kit, BM-4709 or a convenient source of gas. 1.3 Sensor Element Replacement (See Figure 3) WARNING: USE ONLY CAPITAL CONTROLS SENSOR ELEMENT OR THE WRRANTY IS VOID. INCORRECT OPERATION WILL RESULT IF ANOTHER SENSOR IS USED. WARNING: SENSOR ELEMENTS CONTAIN ACID. DO NOT DISASSEMBLE. DO NOT INCINERATE SINCE SENSOR IS SEALED AND COULD EXPLODE. NOTE : If any moisture appears on the sensor element, protect your hands with gloves and wipe away the moisture with a clean, dry cloth. If any acid contacts your hands or other parts of your body, wash with soap and water. If acid has come in contact with any printed circuit boards, replace the printed circuit boards Turn OFF power at the receiver Loosen the four (4) screws and remove the cover on the sensor module Remove the three (3) screws holding the snesor element assembly and the printed circuit board in the sensor module. 10 1.3.4 Unplug the sensor element from the printed circuit board Remove the shorting line from the pins on the back of the new sensor element Plug the new sensor element (4 pins) into the printed circuit board Reinstall the sensor element assembly and printed circuit board, securing them with the three (3) screws Turn ON power at the receiver Check the sensor voltages. See operations section of Instruction Manual for procedure Replace the sensor module cover and secure with the four (4) screws Test sensor response using Capital Controls Gas Sensor Test Kit, BM-4709, or another convenient gas source.
