1 National Research Council Canada Institute for Research in Construction Conseil national de recherches Canada Institut de recherche en construction CCMC R &&0& EVALUATION DIVISION REPORT Issued Revised Re-evaluation due Lumacell Series RSNVII, RSNVIII Thomas & Betts Manufacturing Inc./Thomas & Betts Fabrication Inc. 700, avenue Thomas Saint-Jean-sur Richelieu (Quebec) J2X 2M Plant: Always-On UPS Systems Inc. 150 Campion Rd., #100 Kelowna, British Columbia V1X 7S8 Tel.: (450) Fax: (450) This Report is provided without representation, warranty, or guarantee of any kind, expressed or implied, and the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) provides no endorsement for any evaluated material, product, system or service described herein. NRC has evaluated the material, product, system or service described herein only for those characteristics stated herein. The information and opinions in this Report are directed to those who have the appropriate degree of experience to use and apply its contents. NRC is not undertaking to render professional or other services for or on behalf of any person or entity nor to perform any duty owed by any person or entity to another person or entity. 1. Purpose of Evaluation The proponent sought confirmation from the Canadian Construction Materials Centre (CCMC) that Lumacell Series Products can serve as an emergency power supply in compliance with the intent of the National Building Code of Canada (NBC) 1995, to maintain the emergency lighting and fire alarm systems required by the NBC when the primary power source fails. 2. Opinion Subject to the limitations and conditions stated in this report, test results and assessments provided by the manufacturer show that Lumacell Series Products comply with CCMC s Technical Guide for AC Inverter System for Emergency Power Supply, Masterformat number 16530, dated , and provides a level of performance equivalent to that required for emergency power supply in: - 1 -
2 NBC 1995, Article , Emergency Power for Lighting; Article , Emergency Power for Fire Alarm Systems; and Article , Emergency Lighting. Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation permits the use of this product in construction financed or insured under the National Housing Act. 3. Description The Lumacell Series Products are batterypowered, uninterruptible power systems, that provide emergency AC power for lighting circuits in the event of a primary power source failure. The selected loads will continue to receive sinusoidal waveform power during AC power failure. The equipment consists of a battery bank, battery charger, transformer, and the associated electronic equipment to convert DC power to AC. The microprocessor-controlled unit also provides selfdiagnostics and monitoring of the operating parameters. The Lumacell Series Products are offered in many configurations as outlined in the manufacturer's literature. Single-phase units with ratings ranging from 3.8 kva kva are for emergency lighting and other critical loads, except units with ratings below 10 kva with output voltages of 347 volts are for emergency lighting loads only. Three-phase units with ratings ranging from 15 kva-60 kva are for emergency lighting and other critical loads, except units with ratings below 30 kva with output voltages of 480/277 volts, or 40 kva with output voltages of 600/347 volts, which are for emergency lighting loads only. The kva ratings and the corresponding input/output voltage combinations indicated in Table 2 are suitable for emergency lighting loads as well as other critical building loads, except the ratings indicated with an asterisk (*) in Table 2, which are suitable for emergency lighting only. The system is capable of powering any combination of lighting (electronic ballast, power factor corrected ballast, and self-ballasted fluorescent, incandescent or high intensity discharge [HID] lighting). This system must be connected to a properly rated 60Hz +/-5% line. Voltage tolerance must be +/ - 10% of nominal. 4. Usage and Limitations The Lumacell Series Products are intended for use as an emergency power supply for buildings that require an alternate emergency power supply. The Lumacell Series Products may be used, subject to the following precautions: Once installed, the system shall be inspected, tested in accordance with the manufacturer s Operating and Maintenance Manual, and certified by a professional engineer. The system is not considered suitable for hospitals or nursing homes unless it qualifies under CSA standard CAN/CSA-Z32.4-M86, Essential Electrical Systems for Hospitals. The system s Operating and Maintenance Manual shall be kept on site at all times. Operating parameters can only be changed by a professional engineer who can certify that life safety parameters will not be affected. The Operating and Maintenance Manual shall be upgraded accordingly. When the system is located in a sprinklered building, the service room where the system is installed shall be sprinklered and the enclosures housing Lumacell Series Products shall be waterproof. Batteries must be labeled with the manufacturer's model and number, and bear a certification mark. Batteries must be enclosed in a locked cabinet that is ventilated
3 The system must be located in a ventilated room where the ambient temperature shall be maintained at not less than 10 C and not above 40 C, with a relative humidity less than 90% for single-phase systems and less than 80% for three-phase systems. Where permitted, auxiliary loads shall be supplied by circuits that are separate from those supplying the emergency lighting loads. Figure 1. ž ŠŒŽ Ž Žœ žœ œ Ž ŠœŽ Ž Š ŽŽ ŠœŽ Site-specific information required includes a single line diagram of the installation, panel schedules for all connected lighting panels, equipment room layout showing the location of the system and required auxiliary equipment, and a list of external devices required for the operation, including location of feeder circuit switches and/or circuit breakers for the system and required auxiliary equipment, interlocking devices and, where installed in a sprinklered room, the sprinkler zone shut-off valve location. All aspects of the installation must be in compliance with the Canadian Electrical Code and with applicable local requirements. The Lumacell Series Products must be labeled with the following information: product name; handling precautions; manufacturer s name; certification marks for compliance with CSA General Use Power Supplies, and UL 1778 Uninterruptible Power Supply Equipment ; CCMC R; and manufacturer s certification mark indicating battery performance is equivalent to the requirements of UL 924 Emergency Lighting and Power Equipment
4 5. Performance Testing was conducted at an independent laboratory recognized by CCMC. The test results for the Lumacell Series Products demonstrate that the product complies with the requirements of the UL 924- standard as well as the CSA C and C standards, as amended in the Technical Guide. The tables below show the Lumacell Series Product output configurations capable of supplying sufficient current to allow a 20-amp branch circuit breaker, for a lighting circuit downstream for the system output, to open in the event of a short circuit to ground or neutral of the lighting circuit. Only the combination of system units kva ratings and input/output voltages indicated in Table 2 may be used for auxiliary loads as well as emergency lighting. Table 1a.
