This document describes how to model broadband network devices and access MIB attribute information from the model information view. The SM-BSC1000 Management Module lets you monitor the operating condition of a broadband network by modeling its devices (e.g., set top boxes, cable modems, etc.) within the Topology view of a Container model. Creating the Container Model This involves creating the Container Model, Modeling Devices, and accessing information from the Model Information view. To create the Container model, select Edit > New Model in the Universe Topology view and use the BbSrvContainer model type to create the model. Note: You can create more than one Container model to separately monitor different parts of a network. A Container model can be created inside other Container models, and it can be cut or copied and pasted into the Dev Top Cablewalk on an appropriate interface to provide port resolution for the broadband devices. Where and how you model the Container(s) and devices depends on your network configuration and how you want to view it in SPECTRUM. See Modeling Devices. The Container model s Icon Subviews menu provides the following options that let you monitor broadband network devices. Topology accesses the Topology view, in which you can create models of your network devices. Device Management Page 3 Broadband Service Containers
Model Information accesses the Model Information View (Page 4), which displays general information about the Container model itself and information about the overall condition of the models you created (i.e., the network devices you chose to model in the Container). Modeling Devices Once the Container model has been created, you model devices in its Topology view as follows. 1 Select Topology from the Icon Subviews menu. The Topology view displays. 2 Select File > Edit to change to the edit mode. 3 Use either the Edit > New Model or the Edit > Model by IP method to manually model the devices. The device icons appear in the Topology view. Note: Modeling Devices You can model devices using AutoDiscovery in the Topology view; however, AutoDiscovery lets you model all available devices. To restrict modeling to particular broadband network devices, select your AutoDiscovery method and IP addresses to include only those devices. Access: From the Icon Subviews menu for the Container model, select Model Information. This view displays general information about the Container model itself, condition information about the devices modeled in the Container, and thresholds for changing the color of the Container model icon s sticky label (which indicates the overall condition of the network). The Model Information view is divided into five areas; General Information (Page 5) Internal Attributes (Page 5) Child Count Attributes (Page 5) Significance Level (Page 6) Rollup Thresholds (Page 6) Device Management Page 4 Broadband Service Containers
General Information This area of the Model Information view displays the following Container administrative and condition information. Model Name The name you established during modeling. Security String The security string set during modeling. Contact Status Displays whether contact with the Container has been established. Condition The Container alarm condition (normal, minor, major, or critical) as set by the Rollup Thresholds (Page 6). Polling Status Controls whether polling is on or off for the devices in the Container. Internal Attributes This area of the Model Information view displays the following read-only fields. Condition Value The condition of the Container expressed as a number. The number is associated with the alarm status of the Container as indicated by the Container model icon s sticky label. Number Alarm Status 0 Normal Green 1 Minor Yellow Composite Condition The percentage of devices in the Container that are down (excluding those devices whose models were never active). Child Count Attributes Label Color 2 Major Orange 3 Critical Red This area of the Model Information view provides count and condition information about the devices modeled in the Container. Child Count The total number of devices in the Container, which includes active, Initial Child, and Lost Child models (see below). Device Management Page 5 Broadband Service Containers
Initial Child Count The number of devices in the Container whose models are in the Initialized state (blue icon sticky label). Lost Child Count The number of devices in the Container that were active but have lost contact with the network (red icon sticky label). Significance Level This area of the Model Information view displays the significance levels for the BbSrvContainer model. Significance levels weigh the importance of the model for each possible alarm severity the model may reach. In the case of the BbSrvContainer model, the significance levels represent the importance of the cable modems and set-top models. When a BbSrvContainer model is collected by a parent container and the BbSrvContainer model reaches a particular alarm severity, the significance value will be used to calculate the parent container's alarm severity. Rollup Thresholds This area of the Model Information view contains three read-write values that control when the Container model s sticky label changes color and also when alarms are sent to SPECTRUM s Alarm Manager. Each of the threshold values represents the percentage of active devices in the Container that have gone down (see Note, below). When the actual percentage of devices that are down equals or exceeds a threshold value, the Container model s sticky label changes to the color associated with that threshold and a commensurate alarm is sent to the Alarm Manager. The color of the Container model s sticky label can provide a quick indication of the state of your broadband network. SPECTRUM uses the colors yellow, orange, and red to indicate three levels of alarm condition, with red being the highest state of alarm. Alarms are also provided by SPECTRUM Alarm Manager. Note: Expressed mathematically, the Rollup Threshold value is the Lost Child Count divided by (Child Count minus the Initial Child Count) multiplied by 100. In other words, models that have never been active are excluded from the percentage value. Device Management Page 6 Broadband Service Containers
Set the thresholds to suit your requirements or leave the default values. The recommendations for these threshold values are given below. Yellow Threshold Minor alarm threshold. The default value is 50. Establishes when the Container model s sticky label turns yellow and a commensurate alarm is sent to the Alarm Manager. You might use this threshold to indicate a network condition that is less than optimum but does not threaten service. Orange Threshold Major alarm threshold. The default value is 70. Establishes when the Container model s sticky label turns orange and a commensurate alarm is sent to the Alarm Manager. You might use this threshold to indicate a network condition that should be examined before it threatens service. Red Threshold Critical alarm threshold. The default value is 90. Establishes when the Container model s sticky label turns red and a commensurate alarm is sent to the Alarm Manager. You might use this threshold to indicate a network condition that has a serious impact on service. Device Management Page 7 Broadband Service Containers
