1 Introduction Alameda County Project HeartSAFE Monthly Check of Automated External Defibrillators To comply with California regulation, California Code of Regulations, Title 22, Social Security, Division 9, Chapter 1.8, 10041, AED Service Provider Operational Requirements and the California statute, Health and Safety Code, Division 2.5 Section ,.. the defibrillator is checked for readiness after each use and at least once every 30 days if the AED has not been used in the previous 30 days. Records of these periodic checks shall be maintained. You are receiving monthly reminders to inspect your AED and log into the OneSource Data Manager to report your inspection. You will also be receiving an telling you that the pads/battery are about to expire at 60 days and 30 days before the part is to be replaced. You do not need to respond to this ; it is for information only. The replacement parts will come from ICE Safety Solutions* in a timely manner. Perform the following steps to perform the inspection: Step 1: Inspecting the Cabinet Alarm Insert the cabinet key into the alarm switch on the top right side of the cabinet and turn the key to the horizontal position. Open the AED cabinet and check for a VERY loud alarm flashing strobe light on top of the cabinet. Turn the alarm switch key to the vertical position to turn off the alarm. If the alarm sounds AND the light flashes, proceed to Step 2. *ICE Safety Solutions: ( or denise@getice.com) Page 1

2 Cabinet Alarm Troubleshooting If the alarm does not sound, or the light does not flash, do the following: In the inside top of the cabinet, unscrew the two wing nuts holding the alarm cover in place and remove the cover. Replace the 9-volt battery and turn the alarm switch key to the horizontal position to recheck the light and alarm. Turn the alarm switch key to the vertical position to disable the alarm. If the alarm is still not loud or the light does not flash, the proprietary 12-volt battery may need replacing. Contact ICE Safety Solutions* and order a replacement battery. Replace the alarm cover. Step 2: Inspecting the AED Remove the AED from the cabinet and do the following: 1. If your AED has pediatric capabilities, check to ensure that the pediatric key is in the FRx case. If the key is missing, order one from ICE Safety Solutions. *ICE Safety Solutions: ( or denise@getice.com) Page 2

3 2. Check the expiration dates on the installed and backup pads (located in the hidden compartment). If either set of pads has passed the expiration date, discard the expired pad(s) and replace with new pads (see AED Troubleshooting below on how to replace pads). 3. Look at the status indicator on the upper right side of the front of the AED. If the status indicator is a green flashing light, the AED is ready for service. Proceed to Step 3: Inspecting the Grab and Go Kit. Otherwise, follow the steps below. AED Troubleshooting If the status indicator is not flashing a green light, listen for 10 seconds. If you hear a beeping sound, press the i" button. A voice indicates one of the following problems: 1. The pads need to be replaced - Open a new package of pads and do the following: a. Remove the old pads by tugging strongly on the plug connecting the pads to the AED. b. Insert the plug of the new pads in the AED. Push firmly to make sure the plug is in the socket. *ICE Safety Solutions: ( or denise@getice.com) Page 3

4 AED Troubleshooting (continued) c. Lift the gray tab that covers a compartment of the left side of the AED. d. Place the grey case in the compartment and seat the pads case with the pictures facing you. e. Discard the old pads and order a new set from ICE Safety Solutions*. 2. The battery needs to be replaced - Do the following: Take the AED out of the red carry case by turning the case over and pushing on the black nylon area with both thumbs. *ICE Safety Solutions: ( or denise@getice.com) Page 4

5 AED Troubleshooting (continued) Locate the battery release lever on the back left side of the AED and push down on the lever to release the battery. Clean the brass electrical contacts on the battery and AED with a lint-free cloth. Replace the battery and see if the status indicator flashes green. If the status indicator becomes a flashing green light, continue to Step 3: Inspecting the Grab and Go Kit below. If the status indicator is not a flashing green light, do the following: *ICE Safety Solutions: ( or denise@getice.com) Page 5

6 AED Troubleshooting (continued) Take the spare battery from the hidden compartment in the carry case. Write today s date on the back of the spare battery with a Sharpie pen. Remove the old battery and insert the spare battery. The expired battery can be placed with your battery recyclables. Order a new battery from ICE Safety Solutions*. 3. The AED needs servicing - Report this to ICE Safety Solutions*. Philips will FedEx a replacement AED and retrieve the disabled AED. There is no fee if the AED is under the eight-year warranty. Step 3: Inspecting the Grab and Go Kit Open the Grab and Go Kit attached to the AED with the Ice Safety Solutions logo on the soft case. Verify that the following items are in the kit and out of their plastic wrappers (for faster access during an emergency): Scissors Barrier mask Gloves Towelette Razor Notify ICE Safety Solutions* if any of the parts are missing. Step 4: Examining the AED and Case If either the AED or the case are soiled, they can be cleaned with a cloth that has been soaked in any one of the following solutions: isopropyl alcohol, soapy water, hydrogen peroxide, or ammonia-based cleaners. *ICE Safety Solutions: ( or denise@getice.com) Page 6

7 Step 5: Inspecting the AED Sign If the AED sign is not present above the AED, tell your site coordinator or manager. Some facilities have more than one sign directing responders to the AED. Make sure that the signs have not been obscured. If so, the sign may have to be moved to a more visible location or the object hiding the AED needs to be moved. Step 6: Rearming the Cabinet Alarm Before leaving the AED cabinet, do the following: 1. Replace the AED in its case 2. Place the case in the cabinet 3. Turn the alarm switch to the horizontal position to rearm the cabinet alarm. Step 7: Logging Your Inspection Online Log your inspection into the system using the link provided in the monthly reminder e- mail.
