On February 28, 2000, L&J purchased Durlam Associates, (now Durlam Inc.). is located in Houston, Texas and is the leading manufacturer of fiberglass reinforced plastic (FRP) Derakane 470 conservation vents and fittings. On March 31, 2000, L&J purchased Delavan Process Instrumentation in Naugatuck, CT. is a well-established name in ultrasonic, capacitance and microwave point level and continuous level measurement for liquids and solids. Delavan was relocated to L&J Technologies corporate headquarters in Hillside, Illinois. Today, the L&J family of companies is the world s largest manufacturer specializing in the monitoring, management, and control of bulk liquids. 4 1.0 INTRODUCTION Mounting/Process Connection: One inch NPIM 1.1 Description: This device is a single point, 4-wire electronic switch for level control of liquids. Typical Applications: The switch provides on-off control of liquids. Typical products are: Crude and refined petroleum, solvents, and other liquid chemical and almost all other liquids. 1.2 Principle of Operation: The switch is comprised of a sensor, amplifier, and output relay; all of which are packaged as a self-contained unit. The sensor is magnetostrictive device consisting of a diaphragm, 4 element mechanical resonant circuit, nickel drive tube, bias magnet, drive coil and pickup coil. The sensor diaphragm is electronically driven to oscillate at its resonant frequent with a high-velocity, low-amplitude motion. When the product level covers the sensor, the diaphragm is damped. This produces a change in the output signal level from the sensor's pickup coil. The control amplifier, which is in a regenerative feedback loop circuit with the sensor, processes the signal change, and actuates the output relay for the desired end function. SELF-TESTING FEATURE: A logic network is included in the feedback loop to "prove" the mechanical and electrical integrity of the sensing circuit. Remove plastic protective closures from sensor tip and from conduit boss in housing. 2.2 Mechanical: This unit is position sensitive. For proper operation, the sensor must be mounted from the side of the vessel in the horizontal plane. Screw the sensor into the fitting in the vessel. Use pipe dope or Teflon tape to prevent galling. Tighten only by wrenching on the wrench flats on the sensor. Maximum torque: 150 Ib/ft. Attach conduit for power and control wiring to 1" NPTF conduit hub in the side of the housing. Conduit hub should face down to prevent water (condensate) from damaging electronics. 6 3.0 OPERATION 3.1 General: This section contains the operating information for SONAC Model 110 A. 3.2 Controls & Indicators/Calibration:(See Figure 1): The failsafe switch position determines the relay state when the product is present. Failsafe high or failsafe low does not indicate the physical location of the sensor installed in the vessel. Relay De-Energized When Fail safe: Switch Position: Sensor is: Low Level: Toward Gain Control Uncovered (DRY) High Level: Toward Relay Covered (WET) Set Failsafe Switch to position required by your process Product Status Indicator: A RED (LED) is illuminated when product is present Relay Status Indicator: A YELLOW (LED) is illuminated when the relay is energized Gain Control: A Gain Control (twenty (20) turn potentiometer) with slip clutches at both ends is provided to adjust the unit's sensitivity for liquid service Time Relay Control: A one-turn potentiometer allows relay to actuate from 50ms (fully counter clockwise) to greater than 10 seconds (fully clockwise). 3.3 Calibration: Bench Test of Sonac 110 A This unit is factory calibrated and no further adjustments should be required With power connected to the terminal strip per figure #1 check these conditions: When the function switch is placed towards the relay (high level failsafe) the yellow LED should be on and the red LED should be off NOTE: If the time delay is not at minimum, the yellow LED won't respond until timed out Place function switch away from relay (low level failsafe). Both red and yellow LED's should be off Pressing the sensor face should cause the LED's to come on Field Adjustment: If the unit needs to be adjusted, do so according to the following procedure: This unit should be mounted in its permanent location With the product level below the sensor (uncovered or dry) apply power to the unit Adjust the gain control fully (20 turns) counter clock wise, and the time delay control fully (1 turn) counter clockwise The red LED should be on and if set for failsafe high, the yellow LED will be off Adjust the gain control clockwise until the red LED just goes off. This is the threshold Adjust the gain control (4) full turns clockwise beyond the threshold When the product is brought over the sensor, the red LED should come on Set the time delay control to the maximum allowable delay for proper operation and to correct for splashing Pressing lightly on the face of the sensor with your finger should cause the LED's to change state. 6

7 4.0 MAINTENANCE & SERVICE 4.1 Trouble Shooting: Trouble shooting without complicated moving parts, these devices have little that can malfunction if the units are properly installed. The first two things to check are that the correct unit for your application and that it is installed correctly --- as this manual describes. Table (1) shows you how to trace down problems that could occur. No power at relay contacts. 4.2 Product Warranty: DELAVAN INSTRUMENTATION, control products will be replaced, put in good operating condition, or the purchase price refunded, at the option of DELAVAN, free of charges except transportation, if defective in their manufacture, labeling, packaging, or shipping, and if notice of said defect is received by DELAVAN within one year from the date of shipment. The cost of such replacement, repair or refund of purchase price shall be the exclusive remedy for any breach of any warranty, and DELAVAN shall not be liable to any person for consequential damages for injury or commercial loss resulting from any breach of any warranty. DELAVAN makes no warranty of fitness for a particular purpose, and makes no other warranty, express or implied, including implied warranty arising from course of dealing or usage of trade. 7
