1 NEWTOWN LINFORD PRIMARY SCHOOL Emergency Procedures Policy Aim The aim of this policy is to outline emergency procedures resulting from incidents and situations which could have a possible effect on the school. These are as follows; 1. School closure due to weather / power cut / flood / similar 2. Fire procedures 3. Bomb threat / terrorist threat 4. Intruder on site during school opening times who may carry a potential danger to the school 1. School closure due to weather / power cut / flood / similar In the event of a closure before school opening hours due to the above situation/s, the Head Teacher will ultimately provide a decision whether the school remains open / closed. Call Parents will be used to text staff and parents to inform them of this. A list is also kept by the Headteacher, Senior Teacher and Administrative Officer of people who need to be phoned instead. The Head Teacher will also contact local radio stations and use the school website ( to inform parents. The Headteacher will also notify the Local Authority if there is a closure. It is noted that staff should, when possible, still make every reasonable effort to come to school in the event of a closure, as children may still arrive at school and therefore need to be educated as normal. In the event of the above occurring whilst children are at school, every effort to re-house children within the school will be taken. *If an enforced closure during the day is required, children s parents will be contacted by office staff to be collected. If certain children cannot be collected and the school is unusable, the local Cricket Ground will be used and contact with those parents will be made. The safety of the pupils and staff is the overriding priority in such an instance. With support from office staff the most senior member of staff on site takes this responsibility. They will ensure they have contact list of all children and the school mobile phone. 2. Fire procedures Fire drills are held termly and recorded as necessary. All staff have received fire awareness training. All exit routes are marked and staff are aware of their responsibilities in such a situation. Please refer to * for arrangements for care of children in the event of a fire. The procedures for a fire drill are contained in appendix A and displayed in every room within school.

2 3. Bomb threat / terrorist threat / explosion In the event of receiving a bomb or terrorist threat, the same procedure as a fire drill will occur to remove the children. Once checking of numbers has taken place, they will not remain on the school grounds but be moved to the Cricket Ground. Relevant authorities (all emergency services and the Local Authority) will be contacted. The safety of the pupils and staff is the overriding priority in such an instance. With support from office staff the most senior member of staff on site takes this responsibility. They will ensure they have contact list of all children and the school mobile phone. In the event of an explosion (bomb / gas etc), the school will be evacuated in the same way as for a fire drill and children removed away from the building off site if necessary to be checked for numbers. They will then be moved by staff to the Cricket Ground. Relevant emergency services will be contacted and at that point, directives will be taken from those services. 4. Intruder on site during school opening times who may carry a potential danger to the school In the event of the above occurring, the safety of the pupils and staff will be the overriding priority. Entrance to the school grounds is through a key-coded gate. All gates are closed during the day although main access gates need to be unlocked for delivery and emergency service access. If the intruder does not appear to show any visible signs of physically endangering anyone, he or she (at a distance) should be asked to leave by the Head Teacher or Senior Teacher person left in charge and contact with the police should be made immediately. If he or she refuses, again contact with the police should be made immediately. If an intruder presents any physical danger, or there is any slight concern, he or she should not be approached by staff unless it is in direct protection of a pupil. The police will be contacted immediately. In both cases, all children should immediately be removed to the interior of the school where they should remain until safe to be outside again. The latch should be put down on the main door and both fire escapes locked within Bradgate Classroom. For this reason during the day these keys should be kept in Bradgate Classroom. These situations are of course highly unlikely. Highly detailed procedures could hinder the speed and success of dealing with such a situation but the outlined plans and procedures contained in this policy will ensure appropriate action is taken to safeguard pupils and staff should any emergency situation arise. In all occasions, the Headteacher or most senior member of staff on site in their absence, is responsible for managing info exchange between staff, pupils, governors, parents, carers and the Local Authority. 3 FIRE PROCEDURES In the event of a fire being discovered, all staff must act immediately. The Headteacher (or senior Teacher in her absence) is the identified Fire Marshall. THE ALARM IS RAISED BY PUSHING HARD ON THE GLASS IN THE BREAK GLASS BOX On hearing the alarm children will: Be silent Stand still Listen for instructions On hearing the alarm teachers and teaching assistants will: Ensure that children are calm and quiet Check their designated area as coloured on the plan of school inform Fire Marshall if area is clear or they have been unable to check due to fire or smoke Line up class ready to be exited out of nearest safe exit Take the children to assemble at the front of the school Check the register and report to the Headteacher/Senior Teacher Disabled Visitors should leave via Bradgate Classroom Fire Exit No-one should stop to collect their belongings or children to change their shoes No-one will be allowed to re-enter the school building under any circumstances until given the all clear by the Headteacher or Fire officer Office Staff will check the office, head s room, staffroom and disabled toilet if safe to do so. They will then take all registers, pupil contact details, visitors book, children s signing in and out book, contractor s signing in and out file (which contains asbestos information) mobile phone and the staff in and out board to the meeting point. If the office is unmanned the Headteacher will undertake this duty. The Headteacher will check the upstairs ICT suite and library area if safe to do so. She will also check the alarm panel to see where fire is located/check if it s a false alarm. She will inform Abel swiftly if this is the case to stop the Fire Brigade attending and then stop the alarm sounding. If it is a real fire she will ring the fire brigade. If Bradgate Classroom s Fire Exit is blocked she must ensure that Disabled Visitors are evacuated.

4 If the Senior Teacher or the teacher in charge of school that day is acting as Fire Marshall in the Headteachers absence, the Nursery Nurse will take control of his/her class to enable them to undertake the Fire Marshall role. Once outside the Headteacher will ensure all sweep areas as coloured on the site map are clear by checking with each sweeper to be able to inform the Fire Brigade that site is/isn t clear. If site is clear registers no longer need to be continued to be taken/visitor books to be looked at. Lunchtime Same routines remain except Mid-day Manager to sweep Bradgate and Tyburn classrooms and all toilets if safe to so and report to Headteacher. After-School Clubs Person s holding the club will evacuate children as teachers would during the school day. They will take their own register and emergency contact list. The Headteacher/teacher in charge on-site would sweep the whole building if safe to do so and take out the coloured plan to enable the Fire Brigade to be informed that site is/isn t clear. Before and After School If the fire alarm sounds depending on staff already/still in school the above routines should be followed wherever possible. The coloured site map should be ticked off with the attached market as each area has been swept (if safe to do so). If necessary the most senior teacher on site will sweep an area themselves/request a member of staff to do. This information can then be passed to the Fire Brigade. Evacuation Procedure In case of real emergency/danger the school is to be evacuated to the cricket ground playing field. The Headteacher/teacher in charge is to make this decision. All contact details should be taken to enable parents to be contacted.
