3 British Columbia Plant Pathology Report 2015 October 5, 2015 Prepared by: Siva Sabaratnam, Plant Pathologist Greenhouse Vegetables Commonly reported diseases, Cucumber: Root rot (Phytophthora, Pythium & Fusarium spp.) and vascular wilt (Fusarium oxysporum) Peppers: Vascular wilt (Fusarium oxysporum) and stem rot (Fusarium solani) Research Projects completed 1. Two-year research project on management of important diseases (gummy stem blight, Fusarium and Pythium root rot) of cucumber using biological agents. Affiliation: B.C. Ministry of Agriculture, B.C. Greenhouse Growers Association and Simon Fraser University. 2. Two-year research program on improving greenhouse sanitation practices and detection of Clavibacter michiganensis and Salmonella in greenhouse irrigation system. Affiliation: B.C. Ministry of Agriculture, B.C. Greenhouse Growers Association and Ohio State University. Greenhouse Floriculture A wide range of crops are grown in B.C. greenhouses. Several pathogens are known to can cause diseases, depending on the crop, growing conditions and management strategies implemented. Please refer the Plant Health Laboratory s Diagnostic Report. ALBERTA: Alberta Plant Pathology Report 2015 Research Projects completed at Alberta Innovates - Technology Futures (Reported by Jian Yang) 1. A two-year research project on Evaluation of silver nanoparticles as alternative strategy for disease management in greenhouse vegetable production funded by Alberta Crop Industry Development Fund Ltd. and Alberta Innovates - Technology Futures 2. One-year research project on The effect of luminescent solar concentrators (LSC) on growth of greenhouse mini-cucumbers funded by Soliculture and Alberta Innovates - Technology Futures

Christmas Tree producers insect issues; reported mild spidermite, aphid and spruce bud worm. Greenhouse bedding plant producer issues Insect: Aphids, thrips and spider mite at average

5 levels Greenhouse bedding plant producer issues Disease: Root rot (Pythium or Rhizoctonia) below normal levels, Powdery mildew, leaf spot, leaf mold, Phytophthora and Botrytis were at normal or below normal levels. Greenhouse vegetable producer issues Insect: Spider mite, aphids, thrips were average, leaf hopper and leaf hopper, plant bug, leaf roller and cabbage moth were present in a few greenhouses at low levels. There were other environmental and nutritional issues but that was about it. Greenhouse vegetable producer issues Disease: High levels of powdery mildew in the spring cucs, leaf spot, Pythium, blossom end rot, leaf mold, Rhizoctonia, were at average levels. Home and garden High levels of needle drop still coming in, hot dry spring in Regina area is showing up as heavy needle drop in the centre of the tree this fall with good growth and bud set from this year. High levels of Popular borer in columnar aspen and tower popular. (need treatment options) One sample of bronze leaf disease on aspen
