The first meeting will be a lecture and demo by David Knittle on Azaleas. This is an important one to attend. It starts off a new year of attendance records for the next round of free raffle tickets for MABS Spring Festival in April To get one of these tickets it appears you need to shoot for perfect attendance. I hope to see everyone at this program. The club is putting together a picture reference on how you overwintering your trees. We are looking for club members to send photographs such as the one below to Bob Ruhe at uscvs11@yahoo.com. Bob will be putting together a program similar to the one given by Linda Kondikoff on "Bonsai as Art". The picture shows one way I use to overwinter my tropicals. They are on top of my refrigerator. Note that they are on humidity trays. They receive plenty indirect light from the sky light above. They are watered a least once a week and are in a 70 degree temperature range. It is easy for me to keep an eye on them because I'm always hungry! Let us hear about your storage techniques. 2 BSLV 2015 Spring Semester Our NEW meeting room is C-309. It is the last room in the C-Wing across the parking lot from the greenhouse where we used to meet. Enter through garage door. All meetings are held at the Bethlehem Area Vocational-Technical School at 7:30 pm unless otherwise noted. In case of inclement weather, please call Jack Note: No smoking anywhere on BAVTS campus! February 24 (Tuesday) David Knittle, Waterbury, VT. David will discuss the general care of azaleas. He will also explain the two main schools of thought on azalea bonsai maintenance and how to create bonsai from collected or nursery material. If you have an azalea bonsai and can get to it without harming it, please bring it to the program. MABS Registration Raffle -We will continue to sell tickets for this event and will hold the drawing at the end of the meeting. David Knittle Bio After developing a strong background in woodworking, David Knittle moved to Erie, Pennsylvania in 1980 to start his company, Tansu Woodworking. His focus was to design and build tansu, shoji, tokonoma and oriental style furniture. Lynn Perry introduced him to the art of bonsai and he further developed his skills under Bill Valvanis, who also taught him about refining and displaying bonsai. David then directed his woodworking skills towards building tables, stands and other items used in bonsai display. His education in display continued as he participated in numerous bonsai conventions as both exhibitor and vendor. David attended classes and seminars on Keido with Susumo Sudo and Kunio Kobayashi. His bonsai interests lead him to begin Tansu Unique Horticulture, a business in which he both develops and imports bonsai and related products. Another business accomplishment was to partner with Jim Doyle and Don Gould to create Keystone Arts, a company formed to market Jim s tools, Don s containers and David s woodworking. David founded the Great Lakes Bonsai Society and continues to teach bonsai classes and workshops. March 24 (Tuesday) Basics of Styling Our own Jim Gillespie will discuss and demonstrate the styling of deciduous trees using a Japanese maple as victim. The styled tree will be raffled. Also, our own Dave Tettemer will reprise and update the 5 Year Maple Plan he presented last fall. MABS Exhibit Trees BSLV has committed to providing 3-4 trees to the exhibit. If you would like to participate, please bring in the tree for comment and suggestions. If taking the tree out of winter storage is not safe at this point, bring a photo of it or at least give the particulars of the tree (common name, species, variety, age, years in training) and any info about the pot.

There will be the traditional vendor area, bonsai exhibit, banquet and auctions as in the past. 4 BSLV 2015 Spring Semester, cont d BSLV 2015 Spring Semester, cont d April 28 (Tuesday) 7:00 Lecture/Demo by Mauro Stemberger, Italy Demo material will be raffled. This is a combo meeting with Pennsylvania Bonsai Society (PBS) and will be held at the Greater Plymouth Community Center. BSLV and PBS have united for this meeting so that this presentation by a world-reknowned bonsai artist such as Mauro Stemberger can be kept affordable. The GPCC is only about 1/2 hour from the PA NE extension entrance off Rt. 22 (Lehigh Valley) Directions: May 26 (Tuesday) BYO Bring your own bonsai or pre-bonsai material for work and consultation June 27 (Saturday) Annual Picnic/Auction at the Kondikioff Farm (more details to come) Ornamental plants are beautiful, but I get tired of them because there is no sense of season. Bonsai is a traditional art that has continued for several hundred years and it should remain in our lives. I think young people, in their own modern way, are rediscovering Japan s bonsai culture of enjoying the microcosm. Kenji Kobayashi Page 4

6 Silent Auctions and Contests We ve decided to hold silent auctions during all club meetings to continually raise funds for activities. Here is a beautiful ash platter hand-crafted by Bob Ruhe with an illustration painted by Linda Kondikoff. The platter was won by Joe Sauer. Congratulations, Joe! We have also enjoyed various other auction donations including trees, pots, books and equipment. Maybe YOU would like consider submitting an item for our next meeting! You keep 75% of the final price, the club gets 25%.
