4 WHAT IS PRODIGY INSECTICIDE? Prodigy is a very specific insecticide that is only active on caterpillar pests. It is highly selective to beneficial insects. When used early in the season Prodigy provides an ideal foundation for a robust IPM programme. Prodigy has ovi-larvicidal activity and controls eggs and caterpillars. After ingestion, caterpillars stop feeding within hours and death occurs within several days. Prodigy, used in a spray rotation programme with other products (e.g. Delegate Insecticide), can reduce the likelihood of insecticide resistance developing. Prodigy has an excellent toxicological profile. Unprotected re-entry to the orchard is allowed as soon as the product has dried. PRODIGY FEATURES Excellent control of lightbrown apple moth. Kills eggs and caterpillars. Registered for use in all grape crops. Approved for use on export wine grapes by AWRI. Highly selective to beneficial insects (IPM compatible). 6 PRODIGY ACTIVITY Prodigy is a 2nd generation Moult Accelerating Compound (MAC). It disrupts insect moulting. However, unlike the 1st generation MACs, Prodigy has greatly increased ovicidal activity and will control later (4th and 5th) caterpillar instars. OVICIDAL ACTION Eggs sprayed with Prodigy or laid on surfaces treated with Prodigy will be killed. 7 Prodigy Insecticide Technical Manual LARVICIDAL ACTION Note: No holes in leaf Prodigy is extremely active on LBAM caterpillars. When ingested by caterpillars Prodigy mimics the activity of the moulting hormone ecdysone. After ingestion, caterpillars stop feeding within hours and begin a premature and lethal moult. Treated caterpillars form a new cuticle, but cannot shed the old cuticle and as a result die within several days. UNTREATED: 3 days after caterpillars put on leaf Caterpillar begins lethal moult PRODIGY: 3 days after caterpillars put on leaf Caterpillar dies UNTREATED: 7 days after caterpillars put on leaf PRODIGY: 7 days after caterpillars put on leaf Results from laboratory study 3rd instar caterpillars were introduced onto vine leaves previously treated with the label rate of Prodigy RESIDUAL ACTIVITY Prodigy is not broken down by Ultra Violet (UV) light and will remain active on plants for up to 21 days. Prodigy is not systemic, therefore new leaves or fruit produced after the spray application will not be protected. 07

8 SAFETY PROFILE BENEFICIAL INSECTS Not harmful to predatory insects such as ladybirds and predatory mites. Not harmful to parasitoid wasps. Not harmful to bees. MAMMALS Low oral, dermal and inhalation toxicity. Very mild eye irritant, avoid contact with eyes and wash hands and face after use. Non-irritating to skin, not a skin sensitiser. Non-mutagenic, non-carcinogenic, non-teratogenic. Rapidly broken down and excreted in urine and faeces. ENVIRONMENTAL Non-toxic to vertebrates and birds. Moderately toxic to shellfish, fish and freshwater invertebrates. Do not contaminate waterways. BUFFER ZONES Grapes, blueberries and coffee DO NOT apply when there are livestock, pasture or any land that is producing feed for livestock within 5 m downwind of the application area. Tomato, peppers, egg-plant and okra DO NOT apply when there are livestock, pasture or any land that is producing feed for livestock within 15 m downwind of the application area. BEHAVIOUR IN THE SOIL Broken down by microbial activity. Degrades by binding to soil and incorporation into soil components. Tightly binds to soil particles hence low leaching potential. 08

10 USE DIRECTIONS In the following table, all rates given are for dilute spraying. For concentrate spraying, DO NOT use at rates greater than 5 times the dilute spraying rate. Crop Pest Dilute Spraying Rate Grapevines Lightbrown apple moth 25 ml/100 L Thorough leaf tip and bunch coverage is essential. SPRING GENERATION Apply from pre-flowering onwards targeting eggs and small (5-6 mm long) larvae (up to 3rd instar). Apply a second spray days later. SUMMER GENERATION Apply at first sign of activity targeting eggs and larvae up to 5-6 mm long (up to 3rd instar). The summer generation can only be detected by monitoring. 10

11 Prodigy Insecticide Technical Manual EXPORT WITHHOLDING PERIODS Export wine: Do not apply after 80% capfall. Export Fruit: Consult your winery, industry spray diary or peak industry body for the recommended withholding period. Domestic wine, dried fruit and table grapes: Do not harvest for 21 days after application. SPRAY WATER QUALITY Prodigy is stable (not affected by hydrolysis) in water within a ph range of 4.0 to 9.0. STORAGE OF SPRAY MIX Prodigy is stable in the spray mix for up to 48 hours without degradation. Prior to application the spray mix must be agitated to ensure adequate suspension throughout the tank. RAINFASTNESS Prodigy is rainfast within 6 hours. RE-ENTRY PERIODS Unprotected re-entry can occur once spray is dry. COMPATIBILITY Prodigy is compatible with most commonly used commercial insecticides and fungicides and foliar fertilisers. When tank-mixing any new product combinations, always conduct a bucket test to confirm physical compatibility. 11

13 Prodigy Insecticide Technical Manual CONCENTRATE SPRAYING Use a sprayer designed and set up for concentrate spraying (that is a sprayer which applies water volumes less than those required to reach the point of run-off) and matched to the crop being sprayed. set up and operate the sprayer to achieve even coverage throughout the crop canopy using your chosen water volume. Determine an appropriate dilute spray volume (see Dilute Spraying opposite page) for the crop canopy. This is needed to calculate the concentrate mixing rate. The mixing rate for concentrate spraying can then be calculated in the following way. Example only Dilute spray volume as determined above e.g L/ha. Your chosen concentrate spray volume e.g. 500 L/ha. The concentration factor in this example is 3 (i.e L 500 L = 3). if the dilute label rate is 25 ml/100 L, then the concentrate rate becomes 3 x the dilute rate; that is 75 ml/100 L of concentrate spray. The chosen spray volume and the sprayer set up and operation may need to be changed as the crop grows. Do not use a concentrate rate higher than that specified in the CRITICAL COMMENTS (refer to product label). For further information on concentrate spraying, users are advised to consult relevant industry guidelines, undertake appropriate competency training and follow industry Best Practices. 13

14 TRIAL RESULTS ON LIGHTBROWN APPLE MOTH Independent trials have been conducted in key wine growing regions of Australia to compare the efficacy of Prodigy with that of Mimic against lightbrown apple moth. The results follow.
