7 DISCLAIMER You must read, understand and follow the label to the T. It is the LAW!! Not all Manufactures have requested revisions to the 2009 label revisions yet. Not all requested revisions are showing up on the labels yet. Older label products will sell out and the newer product with labels reflecting any revisions will begin to emerge.

9 REVIEW OF EPA LABEL CHANGES In 2009 EPA revised the Environmental Hazards Statements and general Directions for Use for all Pyrethroid pesticide products used in non agricultural outdoor settings. Reduce potential for offsite runoff and drift Spell out good Stewardship and BMP s Clarify how these types of products are intended to be used

10 REVIEW OF EPA LABEL CHANGES The good Stewardship, BMP s and Environmental hazards label spelled out how these products were to be used by: Professional Pesticide control operators (PCO s) Residential consumers in residential, commercial, institutional and industrial settings. Applied to all synthetic pyrethroid insecticide products intended for outdoor use

11 REVIEW OF EPA LABEL CHANGES Stakeholder Response In 2011 EPA started receiving request for clarification, and in some cases approval to make revisions to the revised label language(epa) Most of these requests dealt with the treatment of overwintering or (occasional invaders) These came from states, professional commercial applicators and industry groups.

12 REVIEW OF EPA LABEL CHANGES 2013 Revisions to 2009 revisions Treatments made by PCO s to treat overwintering pests will be allowed in size larger than crack and crevice or spot if treatment area is above turf or vegetation and when pests are present Treatments to large structural areas above impervious surfaces will still be prohibited

13 REVIEW OF EPA LABEL CHANGES 2013 Revisions to 2009 revisions Because the chemicals are expected to wash off into nearby sewer systems and water bodies during first rain event, prophylactic treatments to large areas of structural surfaces exposed to rainfall will not be allowed. These can be made if areas are covered by permanent structures (awnings or similar)

14 HOW THIS EFFECTS YOU!! All outdoor applications, if permitted elsewhere on the label, must be limited to spot or crack and crevice treatments only, except the following permitted areas, if allowed elsewhere on the label (list 6, below are pertinent to our industry) Areas around structures with soil or vegetation Applications are limited to 3 height above grade on buildings This is why Tempo can not be used outside in certain area like we used too

38 Selective Herbicides Allows removal of unwanted weeds from desirable crops and vegetation Examples include 2, 4 D for removal of dandelions from lawns and broadleaf weeds from some crops

40 Factors that Influence Treatments Soil texture clay, silt, sand Organic matter strong absorption Soil ph May effect persistence of herbicide Soil Moisture Herbicides perform poorly under drought conditions. A light rain before of after an application is sometimes even helpful. Not a downpour! Temperature effects growth of plants and the herbicide in more effective when plants are growing well

42 Volatilization A chemical process whereby the herbicide changes from a liquid to a gas Can happen in high temperatures and may move up to a mile with air currents Always read the label for instructions!

43 Be aware of your surroundings Check with local and state laws Remember, re treatments will most likely be necessary! And ALWAYS wear appropriate PPE Rotate chemistry to avoid herbicide resistance READ THE LABEL IT S THE LAW
