1 Coelia bella Prepared by: Carrie Buchman NJOS Orchid Auction Photos and cultural information from OrchidWiz Encyclopedia 12.3 (with a few exceptions) = Fragrant (good or bad) Strong Air movement 58 F to 75 F at night Water often while actively growing; excellent drainage When new grows mature, allow to dry between waterings, but not stay dry for long. Reduce/eliminate fertilizer until new growth starts and heavier watering is resumed in spring. Best grown in shallow, well-drained containers with an open, fast-draining medium that dries fairly rapidly. Repot as infrequently as possible. Repotting should be done just as new roots start to grow. 1 V. falcata (Syn. Neofinita falcata) Paph. Charmingly Wood (Memoria Christopher Follansbee x Wood Wonder) Dappled to Bright indirect light.. Heavy water when actively growing. Let the plants dry out between watering. Reduce water during cooler winter days. Fertilize very lightly every other watering during the growing season, once a month during the winter. Repot in the spring and early summer, every two years. Clay, plastic, net pots, or wood baskets work. Shaded to dappled light cool to warm conditions, or. Do NOT allow mature plants to dry out between waterings. Grow in a plastic pot with media that drains well but retains moisture. Commonly cultivated indoors. Fertilize weekly, very lightly. Common media: fine fir bark, with a little perlite. 2 V. (Bangkhunsri x Udom Gold) x V. Fuchs Horizon Ceratostylis pleurothallis 66 F to 85 F at night Ideally grown in a basket or mounted, with daily watering. May be grown in pots with coarse media. Fertilize weekly, heavily (full dose) while actively growing but less during the cooler months. Common media: coarse fir bark, charcoal, sphagnum moss. Bright to Shade; Footcandles (bright indirect light, strong shadowing) Intermediate; 55 F min. to 85 F max. Black Meadow 4 5 Brassavola subulifolia Epi. parkinsonianum Very bright light Strong air movement Water often when actively growing; roots must dry rapidly When new grows mature, allow to dry between waterings, but not stay dry for long. Reduce/eliminate fertilizer new growth starts and heavier watering is resumed in spring. Pendent plants may be mounted or placed in hanging pots/ baskets with a very coarse, open, fast draining medium. Use small shallow pots. Repot when new roots are just starting to grow. Plants do not normally respond well to frequent dividing, if the medium is still fresh juts move to larger pot. 6 As much light as possible, short of burning the foliage Keep actively growing plants moist with only slight drying between waterings. Reduce water gradually in autumn after new growths have matured. In winter, reduce water &allow to dry out between waterings, but notremain dry for long. Occasional early morning mistings may prevent the plants from becoming too dry. For 1-2 months in late winter/early spring, limit water to only occasional mistings. Increase water when the flowers start to develop. Reduce/eliminate fertilizer until water is increased in spring. Due to pendulous, branching habit, mount on cork, rough bark, or tree-fern slabs or grow in hanging pots/ baskets with open, fast draining medium. 7 2

3 Dendrobium lichenastrum (Syn. Dendrobium prenticei) Dappled to bright indirect light. 58 F to 75 F at night. Require lots of water; Reduce water somewhat in water; must never dry out Grow mounted on cork or tree-fern slabs. Some growers layer sphagnum moss between 2 thin pieces of treefern. Plants are then mounted on this sandwich. This mount retains more moisture than a regular slab, but still allows free air movement around the roots. Is slow growing and can be difficult to establish. Cattleya Eximia (Cattleya warneri x Cattleya purpurata) Dappled to bright indirect light Mature plants MUST dry out between waterings. Grow in a pot with a porous, freedraining media. Fertilize weekly, weakly. Common media: fir bark, tree-fern fiber, expanded clay, lava rock, charcoal or a combination. 8 9 Vanilla planifolia (variegated) Dappled to bright indirect light 66 F to 85 F at night. Water heavily when actively growing, with excellent drainage. Never dry out. Growers report that stressing a mature plant, when it is at least ft. (3-4 m) long, by letting the plant get drier between waterings for a few weeks will often initiate blooms. A dry period will not initiate blooms if the plant is immature. Reduce water light is low or temps are cool. In nature, Vanilla vines root in the soil and then clamber up trees producing new aerial roots at each node. Cultivated plants are often potted in a mixture of peat moss and sand, but whatever mix is used, it must have excellent drainage. Vanilla is a heavy, climbing vine that requires a trellis, post, bench, or other sturdy support. Plants do not need to be vertical to bloom, so they can be grown horizontally along a rafter or the edge of a bench. Brassavola David Sander (Brassavola cucullata x Rhyncholaelia digbyana) to bright indirect light 66 F to 85 F at night Mature plants MUST dry out between waterings. Grow in a pot with a porous, free-draining media. Fertilize weekly, weakly. Common media: fir bark, tree-fern fiber, expanded clay, lava rock, charcoal or a combination. Rutgers 10 Member 11 3

4 Oncidium velutinum Polystachya pubescens Water heavily while actively growing, but roots must always dry rapidly after watering. Reduce water in late autumn. It may be tolerant of cool (58 F to 66 F) nights. Ideally grown in a basket or mounted, with daily watering. May be grown in pots with coarse media. Fertilize weekly, heavily (full dose) while actively growing but less during the cooler months. Common media: coarse fir bark, charcoal, sphagnum moss. 66 F to 85 F at night. When used as directed, it is safe for Orchids and all genera of house and garden ornamentals. Mega Thrive is not a fertilizer additive nor a standalone fertilizer. It is used in conjunction with your regular feeding program. It is a foliar spray. It s also a concentrate, so you have to dilute at 3 ounces (or 6 tablespoons)/ 1 gal of clean water. Sspray the tops and undersides of the leaves Spray enough so that you see runoff. Repeat application every 2 weeks, for about 2 months for the fastest results.
