6 th Annual Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop Wyndham Hotel, Dallas, Texas September 14 17, 2010 Double String Pumping Systems *Patent Pending Dennis R. Wilson, Advisor, Artificial Lift Engineering ConocoPhillips, Lower 48, San Juan Business Unit
Double String Pumping System Simple Hollow rod pump adapted to a larger wellbore with solids problems Uses existing rod pump technology and metallurgy. Only changes way liquid exits downhole rod pump and travels to surface. Provides a tubing/hollow rod annulus Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 2
Double String Pumping System Development In 2006 my Engineering Manager Rob Stanfield challenged me to develop artificial lift for slimhole wells with 2-7/8 casing. In developed Slim Hole Hollow Rod Pump concept solution Installed five Slim Hole Hollow Rod Pumps and tested Developed Double-String System Concept Installed two with fifteen more scheduled to install Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 3
Slim hole Hollow Rod Pump Rod Pump 4-1/2 casing or larger Gas is produced up casing annulus. Production Tubing Water is pumped up 2-3/8 tubing string. Sucker Rods Reciprocate 2010 Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 4
Slim Hole Hollow Rod Pump Mcfd 2010 Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 5
Double String Pump Rod Pump Gas is produced up casing annulus. Water is pumped up 2-3/8 tubing string Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 6
Double String Pumping System Low Liquid Volume Intermittent Pumping Developed to facilitate intermittent pumping of low liquid volumes laden with solids (coal fines or sand). Lifts solids due to higher liquid velocity in small diameter hollow rod string. Prevents solids from falling back onto and into the pump. Advances liquid and solids upward every stroke or POC cycle due to ball checks. Provides rod/tubing annulus for many uses. Can be configured to eliminate gas locking Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 7
Sucker Rod Pumping Solids Rod Pump Gas is produced up casing annulus. Water is pumped up 2-3/8 tubing string Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 8
Sucker Rod Pumping Solids Rod Pump Low Liquid Rates Intermittent Pumping Solids begin to settle and build on top of pump Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 9
Sucker Rod Pumping Solids Rod Pump 2-3/8 tubing BPD = ½ FPS 32% of our coal well failures are due to stack outs, wear, and tubing failures. 68% of our coal well pump failures are due to fill Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 10
Double String Pumping Solids Double String Pump Clean chemically treated liquid to control pump environment in tubing annulus. 1 IJ tubing - 46 BPD = ½ FPS Gas is produced up casing annulus. Liquid is pumped up hollow rod/tubing string Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 11
Double String Pumping System Pumping Liquid with Solids Solids such as coal fines and or sand pass through the pump up through the hollow rods to surface Liquid velocity in small diameter hollow rod string keeps solids moving. Multiple checks keep solids from falling down to the pump. Clean liquid slippage (from surface down tubing/hollow rod annulus) flushes and lubricates plunger/barrel contact. Balanced pressures at the pump (hollow rod vs. tubing annulus) prevents solids invasion between barrel and plunger 2010 Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 12
Hollow Rod Ball Checks Double String Pump Ball checks enable intermittent pumping Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 13
Norris Mold On Rod Guides Pulled hollow rod/tubing string from slimhole well after 2-1/2 years service the only hollow rod string we have pulled to date. 4/22/ Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 14
Norris Mold On Rod Guides 2010 Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 15
Double String Pumping System Uses of the Double String Annulus Balance system to flush, lubricate, and directional slippage control. Provide additional liquid to slurry solids. Closed loop chemical treatment. Chemical treatment delivery anywhere in the wellbore eliminates need for capillary string. Filled with lubricant to reduce wear and friction Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 16
