13 th Annual Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop Renaissance Hotel Oklahoma City, Oklahoma September 12 15, 2017 Casing Gas Separator: A New Gas Separation Technology Brian Ellithorp BlackJack Production Tools
Casing Gas Separator (CGS) Creates a new avenue to produce wells at their ultimate potential without adding any new processes to drilling or completions Virtually NO-RISK and can be utilized over the well s entire lifecycle Utilizes the oldest and most widely proven process for gas separation in a new package adapted to horizontal wellbores Greatly increases potential on ROI and is very heavy frontweighted, yet stretches benefits for potentially decades over many lift types Sept , Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 2
CGS Basic Fundamentals A full joint of 7 casing sheaths the 5.5 longstring at KOP and the unit is all held together with two special end cap connections A CGS is handled and made up into the longstring with no changing of the tongs or slips; simply pick up, torque up, and drop in the hole A CGS is landed at KOP and normal cementing operations take place with no alteration to typical processes Sept , Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 3
CGS Initial Installation Video Sept , Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 4
CGS Basic Fundamentals (cont.) A newly developed dissolvable polymer blocks the CGS annular space between the 7 ID and the 5.5 OD keeping cement and other contaminants out of the annular space Over time the polymer dissolves as designed to open the annular space naturally to create a conduit to route fluids and gas through There are no sleeves to shift, no profiles to mill, just a clear unobstructed ID matching the remainder of the longstring Sept , Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 5
Dissolvable Polymer Video Sept , Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 6
Dissolvable Polymer Proprietary dissolvable material derived from misapplied frac ball and plug material (DPP) Extensively lab tested in OBM and WBM at 200 F and 250 F for 72 hrs than submerged in 4% KCL for 96 hrs; simulating real well Degradation rates proved to be very consistent and dependable per fluid type and temperature Sept , Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 7
Dissolvable Polymer 2:3 scale tests conducted to account for truest accuracy of dissolve Sept , Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 8
CGS Put Into Action When a well liquid loads or is top-killed a form of lift, an ESP or rod pump for instance, may be run and set within the CGS Virtually any lift form can be adapted to work with a CGS simply by adding a lift specific isolation tool to the string upon run in The result is anticipated to be the most volumetricallycapable and lift-flexible gas separation technology available for horizontal wells Sept , Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 9
CGS Nodal Analysis Across Top Ports w/ ESP Above Top Ports w/ ESP Traveling Up Inside CGS ESP Motor 3.0MMcfd, 3000bfpd, 1000#PIP, 1000:1GLR Sept , Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 10
Lift Installation Video Sept , Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 11
The CGS s Measurements ~53 in overall length and comes fully assembled to location weighing in ~2500 lbs. 5.5 lift sub on top and a 5.5 stabbing sub on bottom 7 outer body is ~40 in length and the weight is chosen to match the max required treating pressure during frac operations 5.5 inner-string is matched to the remaining longstring Proprietary dissolvable sleeve is designed per well specifics and is customizable to end-user requirements by altering stack height Sept , Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 12
What a CGS Will Do Creates route-around for all gas to be avoided by pumps Greatly increase ability to draw well down more aggressively without generating gas interference problems This allows much faster ROI; it is estimated as much as % greater CUM volume capabilities, namely in the first 6 months Improve pump efficiency and reduce over-engineering AL systems Eliminate slugging seen at pump intake thus limiting on-off cycling and inherent problems (sand fallback, stuck pumps, heat cycling) Reduce failures and downtime as well as lost/deferred revenues Sept , Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 13
CGS Results and Data Currently only the extended lab tests and simulations have been conducted The first tests wells are anticipated to be running by EOY All data that can be shared will be made available to the public as soon as possible The creation of new space is expected to have a major impact on overall lift performance that is otherwise impossible with normal longstring casing design Real well data will prove the anticipated claims quickly Sept , Sucker Rod Pumping Workshop 14
Conclusion CGS is a cost-effective, low-risk, artificial lift lifecycle improving separation device anticipated to create real performance and profit altering results In retrospect, may be seen as how many hz wells should have always been completed; could become standard in some unconventional plays allowing better lift performance over the well s life The industry is far overdue for a technological advancement on this front as it relates to horizontal wells.
