1 ACT 2017 CATALOGUE No Fuss: easy care plants and turf Functional: greenlife with practical uses Reliable: dependable greenlife

2 IMPORTANT NOTES GROWER KNOWLEDGE: This is a general catalogue for the region. For local information on which plants work in your area contact your local grower (see our website). Local grower knowledge is vital, and this catalogue is no substitute. HEIGHTS: Heights in this catalogue are for general gardening conditions. In well maintained gardens, some plants will get taller. PLANT NAMES: In this brochure, the genus species and cultivar name are listed like this example: Lomandra longifolia LM300. LM300 is the PBR and cultivar name. The brand name or trade name for this plant is TANIKA, and should not be confused with the true cultivar name. The cultivar or true plant or turf name will always immediately follow the species name enclosed in quotation marks. POT SIZES: In general, most growers have our plants available in 140mm/1.3L pots. Other common pot sizes include 200mm/5L pot, 90mm/410ml pot, 50mm/250ml landscape tube (also known as forestry, native or grow tube). Pre orders are recommended for 90mm pots. Viro tubes are only available for Strappy Leaf Plants and Native Grasses. Our Advanced Trees range is available in 200mm/5L pots and above only. All other ranges are supplied in 250ml pots and above. No Fuss, Functional, Reliable No Fuss: plants and turf that are easy to care for. Functional: the right plants and turf for the right situation. Whether its green roofs, green walls, rain gardens, roadsides or more, you will find the right functional plant for your situation. Reliable: plants and turf that are tested and proven to work in your region. For further technical support and information please visit where you will find licensed growers and articles on all products. A Guide to Our Logos Drought Tolerant: When planted in normal gardening conditions these plants generally require no or little irrigation for most populated areas of Australia. Plants will require watering up to 8 to 12 weeks until established. They are often used on roadside plantings, where they receive almost no maintenance and no irrigation. In extra dry environments, very sandy soils and in severe drought occasional top up watering may be required in the warmer months and will provide more beautiful plants. Cold Hardy: Will tolerate cold and frost. Check with your local grower if you are in a severely frost affected area to see if the plant is suitable. Highly Recommended for Mass Plantings: These plants are recommended for mass plantings as they may help reduce weeds, are low maintenance and can generally be used in tough landscapes such as roadsides. 4 Quick Plant Selection Guide This new feature makes comparing and selecting plants from Ozbreed easier. Each plant has basic information such as its size, uses and position. Height Plants are arranged by height from smallest to tallest (height guides are on the side of the page). More Information The page number on the top right corner of each plants box will direct you to more in-depth information. Density Per m 2 For dense plant growth, far less gaps and quicker weed control use the higher rate listed. For the form of the plant to be enhanced or if you are happy to wait a little longer for weed control use the lower rate listed. For full specimen planting with larger gaps, a lower density should be used based on your own preference e.g. The recommended rate for Tanika Lomandra is 3-6/m 2, you may go as low as 1/m 2 but there will be no weed control. Some plants control weeds better than others, so consider this if planting for weed control. Density Per LM Linear metre spacing is for hedging or edging plants. As above use the higher rate listed for a denser hedge or edging. 40cm Yareena Page 42 Myoporum parvifolium PARV01 A Aussie Rambler Page 37 Carpobrotus glaucescens CAR10 A Fire Bells Correa pulchella COR11 A Page 39 Royal Rambler Grevillea RR01 A Page 41 Crisp, clean, longer lived Myoporum; masses of white flowers 10cm h x 1m w Excellent groundcover, good for coastal positions Sandy to heavy clay soils Density 1 2 plants per m² Native spreading Carpobrotus ground cover with large flowers 20cm h x 2m w Ground cover for coastal/inland plantings Sun to light shade Most soil types Density 1 2 plants per m² Very compact, dense ground cover 25cm h x 80cm w Small gardens, containers for patios Full sun to light shade Prefers reasonably drained soil Density 2 5 plants per m² 2 3 plants per LM Low growing ground cover Grevillea 20-30cm h x 2-5m w Ground cover, specimen plant Full sun to light shade Light, well drained soil; sandy to loam Density 1 2 plants per m² 60cm Sea Urchin Page 52 Aloe hybrid ANDsea A intended Baby Bliss Dianella revoluta DTN03 A Page 25 Gold Cluster Grevillea juniperina H22 A Page 39 Savanna Blue Page 27 Lomandra filiformis LMF500 A Compact, tight and dense Aloe 30cm h x 30cm w Mass planting, borders, specimen planting Most soil types Density 6 12 plants per m² 3 6 plants per LM Small blue native Flax Lily 30cm h x 30cm w Border plant, ground cover Well drained to clay loam Density 6 12 plants per m² 3 6 plants per LM Low growing ground cover Grevillea 30cm h x 80cm 1m w Ground cover, specimen plantings ph below 7, free draining to moderately heavy soils Density 1 2 plants per m² Compact, fine leaf, blue Lomandra; tough with a nice texture 30cm h x 30cm w Mass plantings & specimen gardens Full sun to light shade Wide variety of types Density 6 12 plants per m² 4 6 plants per LM 2 OZBREED ACT CATALOGUE

12 Which Turf Variety Should I Use? There isn t one miracle turf for every situation. Whether it s for shade, wear tolerance, low maintenance or something else, use this as a guide to find out which turf will work best for you. Residential For Shade Up to 40% shade: Nara native turf Up to 60% shade: Palmetto Buffalo For Lowest Maintenance If you don t have time to mow and edge, these are the slower growing, lowest maintenance varieties: Palmetto Soft Leaf Buffalo The lowest maintenance popular Buffalo in Australia. For Avoiding Pesticides Nara native turf All Zoysia types such as these are highly resistant to lawn grub, particularly Army Worm and Web Worm. For Near Salt Water If you live near the ocean or have a salt water pool, these are the best varieties. Full sun to light shade: Nara native turf Nara Zoysia is far more salt tolerant than Couch, Kikuyu and Buffalo. Shade and sun: Palmetto Buffalo As long as the salt water is no higher than the average for pool salt water, this Buffalo is more salt tolerant than other Buffalos. For High Traffic If you have dogs or hard playing kids, these are the best wear tolerant turf varieties. Full sun: Kenda Kikuyu It has 4 times more underground growth than regular Kikuyu. Up to 40% shade and sun: Nara native turf. It has better wear tolerance than Buffalo, Couch and Kikuyu in full sun, although Couch and Kikuyu recover better from wear as they grow faster. In semi shade Nara has better wear tolerance than Couch and Kikuyu. Commercial For Amenity Use (Parks, Factories, Offices etc.) Full sun to 40% shade: Nara native turf Zoysia types need far less mowing, thus saving on maintenance costs. Nara Zoysia is hard wearing allowing it to cope with pedestrian use in amenity areas. Nara native turf is highly resistant to lawn grub. The last thing the public want to be walking on are lawns sprayed with pesticides. Full sun to 60% shade: Palmetto Buffalo If shade is higher than 40%, Nara turf will not work, hence Palmetto Buffalo would be the best choice. 10 OZBREED ACT CATALOGUE

13 For Golf Courses Golf Course Rough: Nara native turf Nara turf can be left longer without mowing, grow far slower, and keep weeds out when mown less frequently like roughs are. It also looks better than other grasses mown at a higher height. Golf Course Fairway: Stadium Couch (high maintenance input) or Kenda Kikuyu (for green winter colour) High input, high profile golf courses are mown very regularly, so they can use a high input Couch that is denser and manicures well like Stadium turf. Kenda has 4 times as many rhizomes as normal Kikuyu allowing it to repair divets more quickly. For Council Type Sports Ovals Rugby, Soccer & AFL (low to moderate maintenance): Kenda Kikuyu This Kikuyu has 4 times as many rhizomes as common Kikuyu, so it wears a lot better. It keeps growing in winter when other warm season turf types stop. Cricket & Baseball: Stadium Couch Fields that do not have specialised full time groundsman working on that field alone often miss scheduled mows. High thatch sports Couch types perform badly when scheduled mows are missed, where Stadium scalps less if a mow is missed when grown in slightly lower nutrient fields, which is typical of most council ovals. High Profile Sports Fields Stadium Couch Stadium turf is a dense, lower thatch, hard wearing type sports Couch, that performs brilliantly on high wear area sports fields, but like other sports Couch types, it needs regular mowing at correct heights if highly fertilised. It needs to be manicured, hence being suitable for high end sports fields that need a high performance couch. Beach Side Use Full sun to 40% shade: Nara native turf Nara native turf is the most salt tolerant, and is the natural Australian choice when it comes to coastal turf. Full sun to 60% shade: Palmetto Buffalo If the shade levels are high, then Palmetto turf is a better choice for most salt laden windy situations. For Roadside Use Nara native turf Zoysia types need far less mowing, thus saving on maintenance costs. For Oversowing with Rye Grass Stadium Couch Stadium turf is lower thatch and allows the rye to grow amongst it very well. OZBREED ACT CATALOGUE 11

For this reason you cannot rely on plant selection alone to stop bush fires, but it makes sense to use plants that generally delay in their ignition. 25 STRAPPY LEAF PLANTS Variegated Tanika Lomandra longifolia NPW3 A A variegated form of the popular Tanika Lomandra. It takes the popular evergreen Tanika Lomandra and gives it a lightly variegated appearance that makes it a great contrast for green plants. Variegated Tanika Lomandra can handle full sun, but is best planted in light to moderate shade in a protected area away from hot, dry winds. In Canberra, it is best suited to sheltered gardens as frost may burn the foliage. This variegated form is tough, but will need pruning a little more often after 1 3 years. This is because blemishes show up more on variegated foliage. Autumn and winter are good times to cut plants back to reinvigorate them for spring and for healthy new growth. A good balanced slow release fertiliser in spring or autumn once every 1 2 years is all that is required. Variegated fine leaf Tanika Lomandra Density 3 6 plants per m² 2 3 per linear metre Height & Width 50-60cm x 65cm Flowering Small yellow flowers from Apr-Oct Best Planting Time March - November For garden plantings and maintained landscapes Light to moderate shade Tolerates frost and drought Sandy to well drained clay soils Care Trim/cut back to remove discoloured leaves as required; see website for pruning Shara Lomandra fluviatilis ABU7 A Shara Lomandra is a great evergreen alternative to Poa for cold or hot climates. It is a tidy, compact Lomandra fluviatilis and has more flowers than most forms that sit well above the foliage. It does not produce seed. Research shows it is far tougher than Lomandra confertifolia types. It was the number one performing roof top garden plant in university monitored trials. Shara Lomandra is an evergreen performer in Canberra and a more compact alternative to the popular Tanika Lomandra. LM600 A Compact, wet feet tolerant and evergreen Lomandra with fine leaves. A compact form that handles drought and wet feet has been highly sought after. Tanika Lomandra proves how popular a fine leaf, tough, evergreen strappy leaf plant can be. However, in some situations a tough smaller plant is needed, and finally a Lomandra longifolia based plant has the answer. Evergreen Baby Lomandra gets lots of golden flowers in spring and is sterile. This fine leafed, compact and evergreen plant is about half the size of the popular Tanika Lomandra. Unlike the multitude of compact Lomandra confertifolia types out there, the Evergreen Baby plant came from a Lomandra longifolia origin and is Phytophthora resistant. This is important because longifolia plants are far tougher in the heat and in the wet compared to the traditional small Lomandra confertifolias that really only occur in dry shade forests. Longifolia types grow on planes, dry slopes, near creeks and in full sun harsh conditions, as well as shade in a multitude of soil types. They are simply less fussy than confertifolia types. Compact fine leaf clumping plant Density 4 8 plants per m² 2 4 per linear metre Height & Width 40 45cm x 45cm Flowering Yellow flowers in spring Mass planting, feature plant, borders ; tolerates frost, drought and periodic wet feet Sandy loam to heavy clay Care Occasional watering in dry periods and pruning every 3 to 5 years Evergreen Baby Lomandra confertifolia Great White Lomandra longifolia MURU A A variegated form of Lomandra with bigger flowers and a more dense, compact form. Also looks good in specimen plantings and commercial plantings such as roadsides, golf courses, factories and offices. Lives on natural rainfall in most populated areas in Australia. Occassional top up watering will be required in extreme drought. Tolerates windy and salt laden windy positions, but avoid foredune situations too close to the beach. Semi-compact, variegated fine leaf Density 4 6 plants per m² 2 3 per linear metre Height & Width 40 50cm x 40 50cm Flowering Masses of perfumed yellow flowers from Oct Nov Mass planting & specimen planting Full sun to moderate shade Tolerates cold & drought Sandy, sandy loam to clay soils Care Water as required for 8 13 weeks until established; prune as required

57 Kenda Pennisetum clandestinum KIK203 A DROUGHT TOLERANT TURF Common Kikuyu male flower Kenda 4 times as many rhizomes Best winter colour of any warm climate turf. Kenda Kikuyu is fast establishing, has great wear recovery, beautiful winter colour and is drought tolerant. Kenda turf has extra large prostrate runners and lots of rhizomes, making it a very fast establishing, quick wear recovery Kikuyu. Its fast horizontal and underground growth surprisingly does not lead to much more mowing than other Kikuyu varieties. It will still need more mowing than Couch, Buffalo and Zoysia varieties. Proven in research to have better winter colour than other Kikuyu, any Couch or Buffalo. Holds its colour better than any other warm season turf in Canberra. It will brown off in the heart of winter, but will stay evergreen for longer. Kenda Kikuyu turf is unlikely to seed.* Excellent for sporting facilities that require a turf to perform under the stress of extreme wear and at the same time, stay far greener in winter than any Couch. Now that Kenda Kikuyu has 4 times as many rhizomes as common Kikuyu, and with its other benefits over Couch, it is a far better sports turf choice. Kenda turf is perfect for sunny home lawns that will get a lot of wear from kids or dogs. It is not recommended for shade or around gardens with no hard edges, as it will grow into them. Yellow leaf in Kikuyu is a common problem. Kenda Kikuyu turf has shown less evidence of yellow leaf in times of wet weather and heat. * As seeded Kikuyu is all over Australia now, it is possible for an occasional plant of common Kikuyu to invade from seed, also we have not ruled out the fact that conditions may someday be right for Kenda turf to produce the occasional viable seed. We have procedures in place to minimize this as much as possible. However, some level of contamination may be unstoppable. Its unique growth habit makes it harder for seeded Kikuyu to invade it compared to other Kikuyu types. Kenda proving its toughness on racecourses Generally sterile, dark green Kikuyu Mowing Height 2 5cm Best Planting Time January December Domestic, commercial and sports grounds Full sun to partial shade; Drought & frost tolerant Sandy, sandy loam to clay soils Care Mow regularly, fertilise once to twice a year More Information See Quick Turf Selection Guide p11 or website Care Water as required until established; top up water in dry periods; see website for pruning OZBREED ACT CATALOGUE 55

60 Plant and Turf Research Summaries of scientific papers and research Over the last 10 years Ozbreed has spent over $400,000 on research, discovering important information about our plants and turf varieties. A lot of Ozbreed s research is internal or uses private enterprise consultants. Where economical, we have worked with universities. Our efficient mix of academics, professional consultants and internal research has allowed us to publish more intensive and far reaching studies, bringing specifiers and users more comprehensive information and confidence in our products. Green Roof Trials Green roofs need more than just succulents if they are going to fulfill all the goals and benefits wanted from a podium environment. Research from Australia, including a paper from the University of Western Sydney, and a USA Texas study have shown many of our native plants do better than introduced succulents. They also show that organics are a viable low maintenance option for green roofs. In the past, advocates of mineral substrates used an argument that you cannot use organics because they slump and the water runoff would be unclean. This research proves both these assumptions to be incorrect. No shrinkage in the two stabilised organic mixes that differed from the mineral mix. Apart from the first flush of water, no significant differences were noted between the water run off quality between the different substrates. Reuse of drainage water for irrigation could be feasible based on long term water qualities. Bare substrate temperature exceeded base of the planter box by C. Green roofs are cooling. 61 Rain Garden Plants Rain gardens or bioretention areas help to remove excessive nutrients from water runoff before they enter our waterways, reducing erosion and pollution. Rain gardens catch water from roofs and other hard surfaces; they clean and filter water through its layers of plant roots, sand and gravel before the water travels through to the storm water system. Plant selection has proven to be the most contributing factor to overall success of a rain garden. Recent research has found that the following list of plants are suitable under various conditions. List of recommended Ozbreed rain garden plants Variety Plant Name Evergreen Yearly pruning required Mostly wet rain gardens Wet and dry rain gardens Baloskion Feather Top Carex Dianella Breeze King Alfred Little Jess Lucia Juncus Lepironia articulata Twizzler Liriopes Amethyst Isabella Just Right Pure Blonde Silverlawn Pink Pearl Lomandra fluviatilis Shara Lomandra hystrix Katie Belles Southern Cascade x Nandina Blush Flirt Obsession Pennisetum Black Lea Cream Lea Nafray Pennstripe Purple Lea Turf Empire Westringia Grey Box x Not suited to ACT. Lomandra hystrix performs better when compared to other plants. This is due to its constant evergreen characteristics, even in dry or wet conditions for most of the year. Other plants such as Carex and Juncus have proven to go brown and straw-like. When dormant like this, the plants do not filter or perform their purpose. Lomandra hystrix varieties, however, stay evergreen, continuing to filter water, sand and gravel all year round. Using turf within and surrounding the rain garden is another option that works well. A recent USA study found that turf produces less run off than plants. A great lawn variety for this purpose is Empire Zoysia turf. It is very low maintenance and very drought tolerant. Ozbreed has used Empire turf in its trial gardens as a filter for our dry river beds and it has thrived in both wet and dry conditions. 62 Turf is a Positive Sequester of Carbon Turf takes in more than 4 times the carbon emission of a lawn mower! Results from multiple studies have found that turf tested positive as a carbon sequester, and now we can confirm that warm season turf uses less water than many ornamental plantings. How to maximise carbon sequestration of turf: A recent USA study* found that carbon sequestration of turf grasses can be maximised by: Cutting regularly and at the appropriate height Feeding with nutrients left by grass clippings Watering in a responsible way Not disturbing grass at the root zone All these measures help grass actively pull pollutants from the air, creating a greater carbon benefit. Turf sequestrates up to 90% of the carbon in a home environment: A recent paper released by Ohio State University, Columbus* concluded that lawns are a positive net sink for atmospheric CO2 under all evaluated levels of management, and that in an average home: Trees sequestrate about a 7 to 14 % of the carbon. Shrubs about 1 to 2% of the carbon Turf approximately 80 to 90 % of the carbon When a tree dies, most of the carbon escapes back to the atmosphere, whereas turf generally keeps the carbon in the soil Turf is one of the most water wise plants: There is a long held sentiment that turf uses too much water. However, a study by the University of Western Sydney* showed that warm season turf has watering requirements about the same as native plants, and turf accounted for much less water than exotic gardens. In another comprehensive study* researchers carefully documented water use in a Buffalo grass (Stenotaphrum secundatum) and an adjacent native (to the US) in a mixed species landscape with the following results: Year one the lawns used significantly more water than the surrounding native landscape. Year two the turf still used more than the adjacent shrubs although at a much lower rate than year one. Year three there was no difference between the lawn and the plants. Year four the plants used more than double the amount of water compared to the turf. In summary, there are vast amounts of scientific research available that show turf is not only carbon positive, but that it is the most environmentally friendly urban planting system available. This is exciting news for the turf industry as a whole, and provides solid facts to governments, lobby groups, sporting facilities and users that should now consider a carbon scheme to recognise this. For more detail, visit ozbreed.com.au/ landscape-gardening-plants-and-turfresearch. * All references to studies completed are also noted on the above mentioned link. Turf cancels out the bad environmental effects of mowers Measuring the Drought Tolerance of Plants The information gathered in this study will help Landscape Architects and Designers choose drought tolerant plants based on real world data and accurate measurements. Formulas for calculating irrigation requirements of plants were taken from a previous study completed in California, and then applied to plants included in this study. Various roadside landscapes that recieved approx. 30mm rain/month were examined closely, and found that the following list of plants survived drought, i.e. plants proven to be in the low water use category. 63 Fire Retardant Plants: Literature Review and Plant List There s a great deal of information available for fire retardant plants, some based on opinion and others based on years of experience from farmers. The CSIRO has recently completed a study testing the ignitability of Australian plants, and this is the only scientific study that tests how quickly both dry and moist leaves of certain plants take to ignite. In recommending Ozbreed plants, we have taken this information into account. It must be noted that any plant can burn when exposed to enough flames and heat, it is just that some are less likely to ignite or may take longer. For this reason you cannot rely on plant selection alone, but it makes sense to use plants that generally delay their ignition. E.g. Lomandra longifolia was shown to ignite significantly slower in the CSIRO study, making it a good choice for fire prone areas. Erosion Control Research Quantifying and strengthening soil can be achieved with commonly used plants and turf. The purpose of this research was to test the influence 31 different commonly used landscape plants and three commonly used erosion control turf varieties have on soil shear strength. Varieties were chosen from regularly used erosion control landscape plants and turf types from Australia and many improved varieties were also tested to investigate how they compare to common forms of the same genus. The following tables detail the best soil strengthening plants and turf based on research completed this is vital information for anyone using plants or turf on slopes, stream banks, roadsides, or anywhere prone to erosion. The shear vane tester is used to test the strength of roots OZBREED ACT CATALOGUE 61

Empire turf was also found to be the best erosion control turf, with an increase of 48% to bare soil. This data can help Engineers, Landscape Architects, and Erosion Control Professionals choose plants and turf that better strengthen the soil and enhance erosion control of slopes, batters, stream embankments, roadsides, retaining walls, and shore lines. It will also provide a basis for future plant breeders to develop plants and turf that better strengthen the soil. For more detail, visit ozbreed.com.au/landscapegardening-plants-and-turf-research. 65 Playground Mulch Trial Abstract There is demand and interest in growing non-woody plants in playground mulch in and around play equipment, including fall zones. This planting allows playgrounds to look more natural and to reduce the open, bare appearance of equipment in mulch, without compromising safety. Incorporating plants into playgrounds forms a more attractive and stimulating environment than mulch alone, which benefits children using the playground in numerous ways. Ozbreed, in conjunction with Fiona Robbé Landscape Architects, The Hills BARK BLOWER and Acousto- Scan investigated planting techniques to use when incorporating non-woody plants within the surfacing around play equipment. The area was monitored for three and a half years from 2010 to In this period two Critical Fall Height (CFH) tests were undertaken to ascertain the impact attenuation properties of the plants and mulch surfacing, in accordance with the Standard test method AS/ NZ4422:1996. This resulted in positive findings which confirm that plants can be grown in mulched fallzones. Overall conclusions Plants (especially soft wooded plants) can successfully be grown in a 300mm deep mulched fallzone in playgrounds Plants establish faster when planted using the Soil Base Method (collar of soil underneath plant, see planting methods diagram to the right) Playbark pine bark mulch is the best choice based on this trial as it had very low slumpage and sustained good plant health throughout the trial That plants in mulched areas contribute positively to the CFH rating of the mulch they are planted in That plants can be used in fallzones of play equipment of any height up to 3m (within the requirements of the Australian Standards) Recommended best practice The following is recommended best practice based on this trial to comply with AS/NZ4422:1996 and promote best possible plant health and growth. Playbark pine bark mulch should be used at a 300mm depth Adequate drainage is important (1:50 slope to base of mulch Drop testing on the Tanika plant area plus use of agricultural pipe to drain the excavated area) Larger pot size i.e. 200mm/5L pot or larger Plant selection of non woody plants (Tanika Lomandra so far is the only non woody plant tested to the Australian Standard test method AS/NZ4422:1996) Plant using the Soil Base Method Recommended establishment period of at least 1 month with no traffic on plant areas Plants should not be planted where they may become trip hazards, but rather be used to the side of anticipated trafficked areas If selecting plants other than Tanika Lomandra or Naringa Westringia, plant species should be carefully selected not to pose hazards to children eg choking hazards, toxicity, thorns, etc Fertilising of plants in freshly laid mulch will aid the initial establishment of the plants as there is little competition for the required nutrients Planting methods More on plant variety selection The soft clumping Tanika plants grew particularly well and would be a variety recommended for planting into a fall zone area of a playground. It is important to note that although Naringa plants passed the CFH tests, the branches could present a hazard if a child fell onto this shrub so it is not recommended to use in immediate fall zones, but can be used in the edges of fallzones. The following plants could also be anticipated to perform well in fall zones: The Lomandras Shara, Variegated Tanika and Tropic Cascade. Little Jess Dianella, Sweet Mist Phormium, and Liriopes Just Right, Amethyst, Isabella, Silverlawn and Pink Pearl. Nandinas Blush, Flirt and Obsession would be suitable as they have not produced berries. Visit ozbreed.com.au/landscape-gardening-plants-andturf-research for more information. 67 Plants are Continuously Being Substituted Substitution of plants can ruin your design. Plants that are of a totally different size, shape or texture are often substituted. Worse still, they are sometimes substituted with plants that will not perform in that situation, or even completely different species. Why Do They Substitute? Usually contractors substitute to save a few percent on price, which helps their profit, or allows them to win the bid. Sometimes it is the supplier selling the wrong plant. Lomandra confertifolia: A Bad Substitute Sometimes, Lomandra confertifolia types are substituted for Lomandra hystrix and longifolia varities even though they generally don t survive in tough landscape conditions. Lomandra confertifolia occurs naturally only in dry shade and is unable to handle full sun. In comparison to other Lomandra types, Lomandra confertifolia are weaker, smaller and unable to survive in wet feet. Our Lomandra longifolia and hystrix varities including Tanika, Katrinus DeluxeA, Nyalla and Katie Belles have been proven to work in tough, low maintenance conditions for years, often staying evergreen when other varieties are browning off. Blue Lomandra confertifolia Lomandra confertifolia Little Con Lomandra confertifolia Evergreen Baby Lomandra (left) after two and a half years has no loss to root rot, while Lomandra confertifolia (right) has been devastated. How Can You Protect Your Design From Substitution? Ask for a certificate of authenticity in the contract or in the quality assurance documents (see below). The contractor at the time of purchase must obtain from the supplier a certificate of authenticity that the plants supplied are authentic and true to type. The plants on the certificate must be the same as the ones in the specification. OR The contractor at the time of purchase must obtain from the supplier a certificate of authenticity that the plants marked with an * in the schedule are authentic and true to type. The plants on the certificate must be the same as the ones in the specification.
