3 BACCHARIS PILULARIS TWIN PEAKS /DWARF COYOTE BRUSH by groundcover; grows much wider than its height Size: between 1-3 tall; can get up to 8 wide Flowers: spring flowering; white blooms Soils: sand and clay tolerable Sun: afternoon shade Growth: very fastgrowing Maintenance: performs best when cut back after spring flowering; Water: drought-tolerant but looks better when given supplemental water during periods between rainfall 3

4 ENCELIA CALIFORNICA/COAST SUNFLOWER Size: between 3 tall; 5 wide Flowers:spring/fall yellow flowers; season will extend with deadheading Species support: excellent for butterflies and bees Soils: sand and clay, including alkaline clay tolerable; very adaptable Sun: full Water: drought-tolerant but will go dormant in summer if no supplemental water is given Growth: many slender branches sprouting from plant base; allows for cutting/gathering/use indoors 4

5 HETEROMELES ARBUTIFOLIA/TOYON Soils: tolerates sand, clay, serpentine soils Sun: partial sun to shade in inland climates Water: drought-tolerant but does tolerate seasonal flooding Wildlife support: birds, butterflies Lifeform: tall tree Size: depending on maintenance, can be 6 8 high, 4-6 wide Foliage: evergreen, 2-4 leaves with berries that turn red in November December annually and white flowers 5

Excessive summer watering can be toxic to this species. Soils: grows in multiple soil types, including sandy loam and red loamy clay Sun: full sun Excellent companion plants: black sage, California buckwheat, California sagebrush 9
