3 Which? urges action on misleading supermarket prices The consumer body Which? has called on the regulator to act over confusing and misleading supermarket prices. It has launched a super-complaint, a legal move which means the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) must respond within 90 days. Which? Said it had repeatedly exposed the tactics, but that these dodgy offers remained on the shelves. Industry body the British Retail Consortium (BRC) said it did not accept the implications of the complaint. The main concerns identified by Which? are: Confusing and misleading special offers Lack of easily comparable prices because of the way unit pricing is being done; And shrinking pack sizes without any corresponding price reduction. Big four lose chunk of entertainment market, thanks to GTA V They was robbed! All big four supermarkets lost share of the entertainment market in the past three months and much of the blame lies with Grand Theft Auto. The grocers share of physical video games sales fell 10.9% in the 12 weeks ending 15 March 2015 compared with the same period a year ago, while online retailers grew their share 6.6% and high street stores 4.4% [Kantar Worldpanel]. Across the total video games market, the biggest titles of the quarter were the versions of Grant Theft Auto V. The grocers accounted for only a third of sales of the title as customers opted instead for specialist retailers.

6 Waitrose extends Fairtrade range Poundworld unveils website Poundworld has launched its new ecommerce website Poundworld Plus. The launch of the site, comes eight months after the discounter pulled out of the website poundshop.com after just six months. Poundworld said Poundworld Plus would offer its customers over 4,000 products at 1 as well as over 1,000 multi-price deals for more than 1. Delivery will initially be 3.95 to the UK, with plans for EU-wide delivery in the summer. There will also be a next-day delivery option of Waitrose has extended its roll out of Fairtrade certification to its own label chocolate. The retailer s own label Seriously and Belgian block chocolate ranges now carry the Fairtrade mark to reflect that the cocoa and sugar, among other ingredients, have been sourced on Fairtrade terms. The certification follows the supermarket s move to make all its own label speciality baking sugars Fairtrade certified in November last year. Coincidentally, the move comes as the Co-op steps back from its commitment to Fairtrade. Since Waitrose started selling Fairtrade bananas in 2007, the supermarket has apart from sugar and chocolate converted its tea, coffee and wine. Earlier this year, Waitrose announced a first of its kind partnership with the Fairtrade Foundation, whereby the two work collaboratively to share best practice, experiences and a joint ambition to build upon their sustainable supply chain models.

8 Tesco pension changes to be fought by union Union leaders have told Tesco staff they will try to overturn the retailer s plans to scrap its end of salary pension scheme. An official consultation process between Tesco and Usdaw began today and will run for a minimum of 90 days. Every member of the pension scheme is due to receive a letter this week from Tesco setting out the reasons for the changes, with CEO Dave Lewis having pledged that it will being in a competitive defined contribution scheme to replace the existing scheme. However, Usdaw, which has attracted widespread criticism from Tesco staff for failing to do enough to oppose Tesco s ongoing staff shake-up, said it would try to get the changes reversed. Tesco posts record 6.4bn annual loss Tesco has reported the worst results in its history with a record statutory pre-tax loss of 6.4bn for the year to the end of February. That compares with annual pre-tax profit of 2.26bn a year earlier. It is the biggest loss suffered by a UK retailer and one of the largest in the country s corporate history. Around 4.7bn of the losses were the result of the fall in property value of its UK stores, 43 of which it said would close earlier this month. The decline in the value of its property portfolio comes as a direct result of declining footfall in many of its out of town superstores.

9 Iceland looks to move in on Tesco and Morrisons layoffs Discounter Iceland has been seeking to take advantage of the woes of rival Tesco and Morrisons by snapping up staff made redundant under its restructure. A van with a billboard advertising store vacancies in buying, food technology, marketing and retail at Iceland, was parked outside the soon to be closed down Tesco HQ in Cheshunt today (21 st April 2015). Thousands of Tesco staff are to be made redundant or taken voluntary redundancy under CEO Dave Lewis restructure, with its head office, soon to transfer to Welwyn Garden City, amon the worst hit. Iceland also sent an identical van to the Morrisons HQ in Bradford yesterday, days after it announced it was shedding 720 head office jobs.
