3 INTRODUCING NINE NEW PAINT COLOURS The creation of new colours is an incredibly exciting time at Farrow & Ball. It s not something we do often, making it feel all the more special. It begins with our Head of Creative, Charlotte Cosby and Colour Curator, Joa Studholme. Drawing on lasting design trends and the expertise of our Colour Consultants, together they start blending paint shades by hand and growing colour groups that both surprise and feel as though they ve always belonged. An extraordinary amount of time and thought goes into each new hue, from refining its exact shade to dreaming up the perfect name and telling the story behind the rich pigments. And it s not just the colours we introduce, but the ones we choose to archive - sparking the fascinating process of rebalancing our carefully curated palette, as you ll discover on page 28. We hope you ll enjoy imagining how you might incorporate our new additions into your own home, both inside and out. P.S. TRERON No.292 A dark grey green This enduring colour is a dark green version of Farrow & Ball classic Pigeon, hence being named after the green variety of the same species.

14 PAEAN BLACK No.294 A chic red based black This Georgian inspired red based black creates an intimate feel in super contemporary or bohemian homes, while adding a distinguished look to traditional exteriors. 16 SULKING ROOM PINK No.295 A romantic and muted rose Not to be seen as overtly pink, but rather a muted rose with enormous warmth, its powdery feel makes it incredibly soft and easy to use with complementary tones. 18 RANGWALI No.296 An exotic and adventurous pink This colour is exotic, happy and vital. The most adventurous of our pinks, Rangwali is incredibly friendly and takes its name from the powder which is thrown so enthusiastically during the Holi festival of colours in India. Though bright, it has an absorbing depth of colour which is achieved by adding a small dose of black pigment. 16 Above Walls: Rangwali No.296 Estate Emulsion. Perfect for those who want to embrace stronger colour in the home, its sober tone creates rooms that feel calm and serene - especially when combined with soft pinks and browns. The exact shade is rooted in a regency palette but is inspired by the cloth of everyday workwear made in the French city Nîmes. 30 BEHIND THE SCENES AT FARROW & BALL Step into the wonderful world of colour creation at Farrow & Ball as we sit down with our Head of Creative, Charlotte Cosby and Colour Curator, Joa Studholme. Over the next few pages we ll give you a glimpse into the highly secretive process of blending new hues, revealing how it s not just the colours we introduce, but the ones we choose to archive evolving our curated palette of 132 paint colours. Though not an exact science, our experts are so immersed in the nuances of colour and how they respond to both light and shade that the creation of our paint becomes almost instinctive.

Where do you begin? The creation of our colours starts in the simplest of ways - at a kitchen table with paint filled ramekins which are mixed and remixed for weeks on end.

31 Where do you begin? The creation of our colours starts in the simplest of ways - at a kitchen table with paint filled ramekins which are mixed and remixed for weeks on end. They tend to fall into three very broad brackets. The first is trend-led colours that feel relevant and will nourish the contemporary home. Second is existing shades that might need a very slight tweak for today s market - Smoked Trout and Sulking Room Pink are recent examples of this. And finally, some of our most popular hues just beg to have lighter or darker accents. Next, it s over to the technical experts in our Dorset laboratory, usually with up to six versions of the same colour. We carefully analyse every colour in our range of finishes and in varying light conditions until we are happy with the exact formulation and pigment levels throughout. How do you gather inspiration for colour stories and names? We hope that our names spark curiosity and intrigue, letting the imagination run wild trying to visualise the colour. But they are never invented just on a whim. Each story is meticulously researched, as was the case with down to earth De Nimes. Inspired by the colour of workwear first woven in the southern French city of Nîmes, denim was once the uniform of the textile factory worker but is now beloved across the globe. How do you decide which colours to archive? Colours are retired to our archive collection with a very heavy heart, but in the happy knowledge that they are always available to order. Some may have fallen out of favour, others are deemed too close to another Farrow & Ball shade, and one or two are reinvented with a twist to appear on the next colour card. Tell us more about the intricate processes of remapping the colour card? This can be totally mind boggling! We must bear in mind the layout of our colour card to ensure it flows tonally and within distinct colour families. The process is one that involves a lot of snipping, tacking and brain ache as the variations are endless. This time it was fascinating to see three different solutions, but in the end we settled on an amalgamation of all three. How do you keep the secret? During the development stage it can be agonisingly difficult! Excitement levels are high and we can t wait to share them with the world. However, in the year between finalising our new colours and the closely guarded launch date they must be protected. Our new colours become all the more special by being kept secret until the very last moment.
