Commercial Excellence Sundance Square Cassidy Building Fort Worth, Texas Producer Member: Advanced Architectural Stone Fort Worth, Texas Architect: Bennett Benner Partners / David M. Schwarz
Sundance Square Cassidy Building Commercial Excellence What is the scope of the project? This is a new 99,000 square feet building constructed in the Sundance Square district of downtown, Fort Worth, Texas. It is the last building of three erected in this area and is also the largest.
Sundance Square Cassidy Building Commercial Excellence What is the role of Cast Stone? The façade for The Cassidy is influenced by modern Danish architecture from the mid 20th century, incorporating horizontal ribbons in a repeating design of cast stone. Cast Stone is often thought of as a traditional style building material. This building illustrates the flexibility of Cast Stone to create a modern design.
Sundance Square Cassidy Building Commercial Excellence How was Cast Stone critical to the success of the project? The architect for the project referenced how the Cast Stone and window design worked perfectly together to provide a sophisticated feel of both timeless and contemporary design. He stated The flexibility of Cast Stone design helped us achieve a unique design. The Cast Stone pieces at the arches required special coordination with the mason since they had to be set with a 110 ton crane.
Sundance Square Cassidy Building Commercial Excellence Judges Comments High degree of difficulty Brise-soleil across the windows very well done Non-traditional contemporary use of Cast Stone is refreshing Cast Stone gives a depth to the façade and works shade and shadow. Simple profiles that add depth to the façade
Commercial Excellence Sundance Square West Building (Also known as The Westbrook) Fort Worth, Texas Producer Member: Advanced Architectural Stone Fort Worth, Texas Architect: Bennett Benner Partners
Sundance Square West Building Commercial Excellence What is the scope of the project? This is a new 6 story Class A office building facing a new 3 block open-air plaza in downtown Fort Worth, Texas. The building contains 93,000 square feet. This building is part of many buildings within the Sundance Square complex.
Sundance Square West Building Commercial Excellence What is the role of Cast Stone? Cast Stone is the building material of architectural design used on all buildings within the 35 block Sundance Square area. However, Cast Stone was used differently on almost all buildings. On The Westbrook Building Cast Stone was used in the overall design of the building to be reminiscent of the Art Deco structures located in many areas of this city. Most of those Art Deco designs are incorporated into either over and under panels at all windows and entrance ways.
Sundance Square West Building Commercial Excellence How was Cast Stone critical to the success of the project? This building was completed at about the same time as its bookend building on the east side of the plaza was finished. While the design of the Cast Stone is completely different on this building Art Deco versus acorn adornment on the sister building- it shows the versatility of Cast Stone in architectural design.
Sundance Square West Building Commercial Excellence Judges Comments Impressive amount of Cast Stone Art deco reliefs, traditionally done in metal are well done with the Cast Stone
Commercial Excellence St. Peter Chancery and Colonnade Houston, Texas Producer Member: Stone Castle Industries, Inc. Houston, Texas Architect: Jackson & Ryan Architects
St. Peter Chancery and Colonnade Commercial Excellence What is the scope of the project? The new construction of the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter and Colonnade was an elaborate project and was built to be an extension of the existing courtyards of Our Lady of Walsingham Catholic Church and Shrine. The Cast Stone was used for string courses, detailed entry way, archways, balcony, and Cast Stone window sills that complimented the existing Church on the same property.
St. Peter Chancery and Colonnade Commercial Excellence What is the role of Cast Stone? The role of the Cast Stone in this project was crucial in this project to continue with the masonry detailing such as using the Cast Stone sills on the window openings. The intricate features using Cast Stone in the entry way gives the impression of walking through an Italian palace. The archways in the colonnade show the well-crafted workmanship that went into this project.
St. Peter Chancery and Colonnade Commercial Excellence How was Cast Stone critical to the success of the project? The Cast Stone really tied everything together and was crucial to the success of this project. The Cast Stone added detailing that highlighted the entire project. The sophisticated Cast Stone string courses, beautifully detailed Cast Stone entry, and sills on the window openings both interior and exterior really differentiates this building.
St. Peter Chancery and Colonnade Commercial Excellence Judges Comments Refreshing and powerful but the Cast Stone does not dominate in either the interior or exterior use Nice consistency in and out to knit the project together with Cast Stone Complexity of the parts Cast Stone compliments the architecture of the building
Commercial Excellence Mohammedi Masjid Complex Houston, Texas Producer Member: Siteworks, Inc. Houston, Texas Architect: Kakhruddin Sabir FS Group Architect
Mohammedi Masjid Complex Commercial Excellence What is the scope of the project? This project was an addition to an existing building. The addition consists of a three story main prayer hall and a two school building. The Cast Stone on this project includes wainscot, water table banding, window surrounds, and medallions.
Mohammedi Masjid Complex Commercial Excellence What is the role of Cast Stone? Cast Stone was chosen for this project because of its ability to achieve the look envisioned by the architect along with its ability to seamlessly tie with the Egyptian limestone and brick used throughout the project.
Mohammedi Masjid Complex Commercial Excellence How was Cast Stone critical to the success of the project? Cast Stone was able to fulfill the architect s vision at an affordable price. Other alternatives were considered but could not be afforded in the budget allowed.
Mohammedi Masjid Complex Commercial Excellence Judges Comments Mosque differentiated from the school which is appropriate Cast Stone detail work is exceptional Complimentary palette throughout the design Intricacy of the castings is incredible Scale of Cast Stone elements is fitting with architecture
Commercial Excellence Lake Park Crescent Chicago, Illinois Producer Member: Architectural Cast Stone West Chicago, Illinois Architect: VOA Architects
Lake Park Crescent Commercial Excellence What is the scope of the project? This was the first phase of a multi-phase low income housing project in Chicago. The seventeen building first phase consisted of many different sized building using different color brick.
Lake Park Crescent Commercial Excellence What is the role of Cast Stone? Cast Stone was used to unify the different buildings within the project and more importantly to add an element of design to the project not typically seen in low income housing.
Lake Park Crescent Commercial Excellence How was Cast Stone critical to the success of this project? Given the intricacies of the design elements in both the panels and window heads, limestone proved to be cost prohibitive. By standardizing panel and window head sizes, we were able to capture all of the architectural design intent and provide the Cast Stone within the project s very tight budget. The molds used on this first phase will be used on subsequent phases, making the future phases even more cost-effective.
Lake Park Crescent Commercial Excellence Judges Comments Pushing the boundaries for low income housing Cast Stone unifies the buildings regardless of color of brick Dress up low income housing with Cast Stone
Commercial Excellence SMU Residential Complex & Dining Commons Dallas, Texas Producer Member: Advanced Architectural Stone Fort Worth, Texas Architect: KSQ Architects
SMU Residential Complex & Dining Commons Commercial Excellence What is the scope of the project? This is a nine-acre commons complex of all new facilities including five residence halls, a dining commons, and an 800 space parking garage. The complex provides campus housing for 1,250 students. The project cost $146 million. Cast Stone is an important architectural feature throughout the SMU campus.
SMU Residential Complex & Dining Commons Commercial Excellence What is the role of Cast Stone? Cast Stone is the product used to define and implement the overall campus design. The architects for the school defines the campus buildings as Collegiate Georgian style architecture. Cast Stone is used exclusively to convey the Georgian design of these buildings.
SMU Residential Complex & Dining Commons Commercial Excellence How was Cast Stone critical to the success of the project? The new commons area was key to implementing a residential commons model of campus living at SMU. Living in campus housing, particularly in a living-learning community, has a significant positive effect on students learning outcomes. An important aspect of this approach is to incorporate the visual look and feel of the overall campus design. The use of cast stone produced in new and innovative design created a strong tie to the existing campus while showing the creative design potential of Cast Stone.
SMU Residential Complex & Dining Commons Commercial Excellence Judges Comments Lots of Cast Stone and consistently produced The project would be very dull without the Cast Stone Cast Stone is the unifying element to tie the buildings together and is appropriate for the architecture
Restoration Excellence Texas A&M University Flagpole College Station, Texas Producer Member: Stone Castle Industries, Inc. Houston, Texas Architect: Texas A&M In-house Panel of Architects
Texas A&M University Flagpole Restoration Excellence BEFORE BEFORE AFTER What is the scope of the project? This project was to completely replace the Cast Stone flag pole base that was donated to the University by the 1934 graduating class of Texas A&M. Due to the legacy, tradition this flagpole show honor to the past and was very important to complete to perfection. The impeccable details show the flawless and remarkable workmanship that was put into completing this project to Texas A&M s approval.
Texas A&M University Flagpole Restoration Excellence What is the role of Cast Stone? Although the project was extremely challenging and very difficult due to the installation, fine details, and high expectations; we delivered an amazing and unique final product that Texas A&M is proud to display in front of the Administration Building. The Cast Stone was virtually the entire project including but not limited to the star shaped foundation that also functions as a bench. The five sided base depicts the components on which Texas A&M was founded: Military, Agriculture, and Mechanics and the other sides embrace bronze plaque with past college presidents.
Texas A&M University Flagpole Restoration Excellence DURING DURING DURING How was Cast Stone critical to the success of the project? The Cast Stone was crucial to the success of this project due to the meticulous details involved in the construction. The original base was salvaged and transported to Houston where it was cut into five individual panels. Each of the original panels had to be restored using rubber, wood, Bondo, and fiberglass hydro stone plaster in order to create a positive.
Texas A&M University Flagpole Restoration Excellence Judges Comments Standout Restoration Project Lovely detail and replication from small pieces to the finished product Good before and after photos of the fabrication Was badly deteriorated and did great job with the restoration Beautifully executed project and explanation of the work
Restoration Excellence Highland Park DPS & Town Hall Highland Park, Texas Producer Member: Advanced Architectural Stone Fort Worth, Texas Architect: RPGA Design Group, Inc.
Highland Park DPS & Town Hall Restoration Excellence What is the scope of the project? This is a restoration and expansion project for the affluent incorporated city of Highland Park, Texas. The original building dates from The project increased the elevation of the building while not increasing the footprint of the structure. All of the Cast Stone was replaced by our company.
Highland Park DPS & Town Hall Restoration Excellence What is the role of Cast Stone? This original building was built approximately 85 years ago in a Spanish-Colonial design. The Cast Stone and other materials had been maintained, but needed updating and improvement in scale due to the addition of the second story. The restoration and expansion built on the original and highly ornamental use of Cast Stone products with a central dome design providing for a seamless transition from the original one story structure to a new second story. Cast Stone is the primary design element expressing the Spanish-Colonial design.
Highland Park DPS & Town Hall Restoration Excellence How was Cast Stone critical to the success of the project? The timeless beauty of Cast Stone is evident with this project. The ability of the architects to direct the replacement of certain pieces of stone and scale while designing new Cast Stone for the larger and improved building were critical to the successes of the project.
Highland Park DPS & Town Hall Restoration Excellence Judges Comments Can t tell the original from the new building because it all matched consistently A lot of complexity and the Cast Stone ties it all together Respectful of the existing design
Hardscape Excellence Cantigny Park Wheaton, Illinois Producer Member: Architectural Cast Stone West Chicago, Illinois Architect: DLA Architects
Cantigny Park Hardscape Excellence What is the scope of the project? Cantigny is a 500 acre park donated by the McCormick Family for public use. The McCormick s founded International Harvester and owned the Chicago Tribune. For the park s 60th anniversary a new main entrance was constructed. All new hardscape elements utilized brick and Cast Stone.
Cantigny Park Hardscape Excellence What is the role of Cast Stone? Cast Stone was used extensively on the hardscape elements to help architecturally link the new improvements with the existing hardscape and building elements.
Cantigny Park Hardscape Excellence How was Cast Stone critical to the success of the project? Cast Stone was the perfect material for this new entrance because it delivered the exact design that the architect wanted and was much more cost effective than limestone.
Cantigny Park Hardscape Excellence Judges Comments Use of Cast Stone is not overbearing Strikes a nice balance of the other masonry Consistency of the coloration work (not too much contrast and the mortar helped to coordinate the project. )
Manufacturing Excellence SMU Residential Complex & Dining Commons Dallas, Texas Producer Member: Advanced Architectural Stone Fort Worth, Texas
SMU Residential Complex & Dining Commons Manufacturing Excellence What is the scope of the project? This is a new nine-acre commons complex including five residence halls, a dining commons, and an 800 space parking garage. The complex provides campus housing for 1,250 students. The project cost $146 million. Cast Stone is an important architectural feature throughout the SMU campus.
SMU Residential Complex & Dining Commons Manufacturing Excellence What special molding or casting techniques were necessary to illustrate the Architect s concept on the project? There were many extremely large pieces of Cast Stone on the project. The pieces at the rotunda and entry averaged over 4 cubes per piece. The casting of such large pieces presented special planning - proper and timely tamping and turning of the pieces. The rotunda design of the dining area with its 30,000 sq. ft. area, created the most planning from a manufacturing perspective. The Cast Stone pieces at the roof cornice had a 35 degree radius. The Cast Stone sign, spanning over 100 ft., for the dining commons consisted of a radius design supported by Cast Stone columns.
SMU Residential Complex & Dining Commons Manufacturing Excellence Degree of Difficulty This project consisted of over 23,000 pieces of Cast Stone. The size and critical timing of this project made this project difficult. There was a small amount of space for storage of the Cast Stone at the job site, therefore scheduling, shipping accuracy and coordination were critical.
SMU Residential Complex & Dining Commons Manufacturing Excellence Were there unique project requirements that presented particular challenges and how were they met? The completion of the project coinciding with the opening of the residence halls for the fall semester was a project requirement. Due to unrelated construction issues the project was delayed, which meant that production of Cast Stone was delayed but he final turnover date was not changed. The project was completed within the time frame needed by the school.
SMU Residential Complex & Dining Commons Manufacturing Excellence What a great Cast Stone project! Judges Comments It s like a cast stone brochure within itself: sills, arches, copings, balusters, window surrounds, entryways, columns, etc. Massive display of Cast Stone in size and detail with excellent color consistency Huge project with strict time constraints Variety of Cast Stone items making it good representation of the Cast Stone Industry Love the Snake Seat Wall Coping and radius rotunda Very nice finished product
Manufacturing Excellence St. Peter s Anglican Church Tallahassee, Florida Producer Member: Advanced Architectural Stone Fort Worth, Texas
St. Peter s Anglican Church Manufacturing Excellence What is the scope of the project? This is a new 36,000 square foot, multi-towered, English-inspired, gothic cathedral-size church. The building contains three 100-foot high bell towers, 24 spires, 7 crosses, and two 12 panel cast stone rose windows.
St. Peter s Anglican Church Manufacturing Excellence What special molding or casting techniques were necessary to illustrate the Architect s concept on the project? This project consisted of 68 molds, not including molds that were blocked-down. The volume of molds was a challenge. The spires and the rose windows molds, due primarily to size, were exceptional molds. The 24 spires and the 7 crosses were produced by the wet pour method and all other pieces were made via the dry tamp method.
St. Peter s Anglican Church Manufacturing Excellence Degree of Difficulty The accuracy and size of the molds for the rose windows and the spires as well as the color and texture uniformity requirements were the challenges on the project.
St. Peter s Anglican Church Manufacturing Excellence Were there unique project requirements that presented particular challenges and how were they met? We determined which casting methods were best for the ornamental pieces of Cast Stone including the spires, crosses, and rose windows. After discussion with the masons and other installers on the project, we were able to make precise recommendations on both casting methods and best practices in installation. The precise color and texture matching between both wet and dry cast methods of production were achieved.
St. Peter s Anglican Church Manufacturing Excellence Judges Comments Excellent color consistency in matching both wet and dry cast methods that best fits each unique profile. Outstanding use of Cast Stone featuring the unique elements of: the Rose Window, Spires, and Crosses. Intricate Molds

Texas A&M University Flagpole Manufacturing Excellence BEFORE AFTER BEFORE Were there unique project requirements that presented particular challenges and how were they met? The condition of the original flagpole presented a huge challenge due to the cracks and deterioration of the stone. The details were hardly visible if any at all. With the help of the University s archives we were able to restore all of the original detail that had been worn off or destroyed by the past 80 years of the Texas elements and the daily flag rising by the Corp of Cadets.
Texas A&M University Flagpole Manufacturing Excellence Judges Comments An awesome display of how Cast Stone can be utilized. Unique and difficult mold process, using several different methods for this dry tamp project Challenging fabrication and installation Amazing research and replication of original flag pole Excellent mold and casting work Different type materials used for just one mold
