3 UV21132 Principles of cleaning and protecting floors, carpets and soft furnishings The aim of this unit is to develop your knowledge and understanding of cleaning and maintaining soft floors and furnishings including the removal of stains and the application of stain treatments. You will learn how to prepare for the cleaning and protection of floors, carpets and soft furnishings, taking into account the health, safety and hygiene requirements and the importance of checking that the area to be cleaned or protected is suitable for the planned treatment. 5 Principles of cleaning and protecting floors, carpets and soft furnishings Learning outcomes On completion of this unit you will: 1. Know how to prepare to clean and protect floors, carpets and soft furnishings 2. Know how to maintain soft floors and furnishings Evidence requirements 1. Knowledge outcomes There must be evidence that you possess all the knowledge and understanding listed in the Knowledge section of this unit. In most cases this can be done by professional discussion and/or oral questioning. Other methods, such as projects, assignments and/or reflective accounts may also be used. 2. Tutor/Assessor guidance You will be guided by your tutor/assessor on how to achieve learning outcomes in this unit. All outcomes must be achieved. 3. External paper There is no external paper requirement for this unit. UV

6 Developing knowledge Achieving knowledge outcomes You will be guided by your tutor and assessor on the evidence that needs to be produced. Your knowledge and understanding will be assessed using the assessment methods listed below*: Projects Observed work Witness statements Audio-visual media Evidence of prior learning or attainment Written questions Oral questions Assignments Case studies Professional discussion Where applicable your assessor will integrate knowledge outcomes into practical observations through professional discussion and/or oral questioning. When a criterion has been orally questioned and achieved, your assessor will record this evidence in written form or by other appropriate means. There is no need for you to produce additional evidence as this criterion has already been achieved. Some knowledge and understanding outcomes may require you to show that you know and understand how to do something. State the importance of removing superficial dust and debris before starting the cleaning process b. State the importance of softening ground-in soil and/or stains c. State the importance of carrying out test cleans before applying treatments d. Describe safe working practices when working at heights e. 9 Unit content This section provides guidance on the recommended knowledge and skills required to enable you to achieve each of the learning outcomes in this unit. Your tutor/assessor will ensure you have the opportunity to cover all of the unit content. Outcome 1: Know how to prepare to clean and protect floors, carpets and soft furnishings Personal hygiene: Appearance (clean uniform, dress, clean hair, make-up, jewellery), washing hands, use personal protective equipment (PPE), reporting of personal illness to supervisor. Importance of maintaining personal hygiene: Reduce spread of germs and cross-contamination, to promote health and safety, to comply with workplace legislation, to maintain the organisation s brand image, to meet job requirements. Appropriate personal protective equipment: Suitable footwear, uniform, gloves, specialist equipment (goggles, kneeling pad). Importance of wearing the appropriate PPE: Protect from accidents, comply with current health and safety legislation. Organisational requirements: Current compliance with legislation, health and safety of staff and customers, tasks completed to the required standard (within the required time and cost), maintenance and upkeep of floors, carpets or soft furnishing. Importance of checking health and safety instructions: Avoid damage to materials/equipment, prevent accidents, effective use of equipment (making sure they do the job properly), prolong the life of floors, carpets and soft furnishings, comply with any warranties, comply with legislation. Deep cleaning equipment: Will include suction cleaners, rotary machines and pads, steam cleaners, buckets, cloths, scrubbing brushes, ladders. Importance of following checks and restrictions: Prevent damage to flooring or equipment, avoid accidents, comply with health and safety legislation, ensure effective use of equipment, prolong the life of the floors, carpets and soft furnishing. Materials: Carpet and upholstery shampoo and cleaners, dry powder, solvents and specialist stain removers, disinfectants, detergents, polishes, caustic soda. Importance of checking that the material is suitable for the planned treatment: Prevent damage to floors, carpets, soft furnishing or equipment, avoid accidents, cost-effective use of materials, prolong the life of the floor, carpet or soft furnishing, comply with any warranties. 10 Outcome 2: Know how to maintain soft floors and furnishings Importance of removing superficial dust and debris before starting the cleaning process: Prevents build-up of soil and dirt at the base of the pile of carpet, prevents spread of dust and debris, dust and debris may be harder to remove once it is wet. Importance of softening ground-in soil and/or stains: Loosens ground-in dirt, prevents the stain becoming permanent, can extend the life of the surfaces, gives surfaces a cleaner and healthier look. Test cleans: Applying material to inconspicuous area. Importance of carrying out test cleans before applying treatments: Prevent damage to the surface, check colour fastness, helps find damage that is not cleanable. Safe working practices when working at heights: Follow guidance given during training, use of appropriate equipment to get to the hard-to-reach places (vacuum attachments, long-handled dusters, step ladder), removing the dust from the area with a vacuum cleaner, comply with health and safety legislation, risk assessment, put control measures in place (warning signs, cordons, PPE). Importance of removing any excess moisture from the area which has been cleaned: Prevent mould, mildew and odours, prevent discoloration and damage to fabric, prolong life of product, prevent accidents to staff and customers, avoid customer complaints. 8 UV21132
