CaGBC Manitoba Chapter Leadership Board: Election Slate Allan Baskin...1 Brent Kolton...3 Jennifer Webber...4 Liane Wychreschuk...6 Louisa Garbo...8 Marten Duhoux Nick Bockstael Rob Spewak Allan Baskin Partner, Senior Mechanical Engineer, SMS Engineering Credentials: BA, HBA, MA, B.Eng., P.Eng., LEED BD+C, HFDP Knowledgeable in all aspects of mechanical building systems, Allan has more than a decade of experience in health care, industrial and commercial projects. His diverse background includes the design of heating and cooling systems, large fire protection systems and building control systems. Allan led the design team on the Seven Oaks General Hospital Access to Care Redevelopment, St. Boniface General Hospital Cath Lab Renovations, University of Manitoba Duff Roblin Sprinkler Upgrade, Steinbach Aquatic Centre Splash Park and the Monsanto II Addition. Q: Why Do You Wish to Serve on the Chapter Leadership Board of the Manitoba Chapter? A: As a professional engineer I strive to incorporate sustainability into all projects I am involved with. Joining the Manitoba Chapter board would allow me to share my knowledge and experience with other members and help the chapter to promote green building design. A: I contribute actively on the design of mechanical systems that are used on LEED projects. This often involves proposing mechanical systems that use less water and energy, incorporate energy recovery and meets the 1

operational requirements of the users. Since October 2015 I volunteered as secretary for the MB Chapter interim board. A: Through my daily activities I am often face to face with decision makers and stakeholders including building owners, facility managers and property developers. This direct contact affords me the opportunity to provide input on the building design approach to be followed. I am also an active member in my own professional association (EGM) which provides an avenue for further information sharing and advertising of Chapter news and events. Q: What do you believe the priorities should be for the green building industry in Manitoba over the A: Individuals including stakeholders react most positive to ideas when there is a direct benefit to be seen. In order to foster and engrain a sustainable approach to building design in the future we need to show key stakeholders the direct benefits of this approach. This can be accomplished by presenting real-world local examples on the performance (through metrics) and tangible advantages of LEED buildings. 2

Jennifer Webber Project Coordinator- Power Smart High Performance Buildings, Manitoba Hydro Credentials: B.A. (Geog), B.Ed., LEED AP BD+C Jennifer is very passionate about sustainability and the green construction industry in Manitoba. She looks forward to joining the Chapter Leadership board to strengthen, support and educate the community to establish Manitoba as a leader in sustainable building in Canada and around the world. Jennifer is currently the Project Coordinator for the Power Smart New Buildings Program at Manitoba Hydro, which encourages new construction projects to be more energy efficient than minimum code. She has the pleasure of working with several new construction project teams in the Province and has experience on over 10 LEED Certified projects to date. Jennifer is also a CaGBC Faculty member and a competitive Crossfitter. Q: Why Do You Wish to Serve on the Chapter Leadership Board of the Manitoba Chapter? A: I want to be a part of the chapter leadership board to strengthen, support and educate the green building community in Manitoba. I am very passionate about the mandate of the CaGBC and believe that Manitoba has a lot of work to do to align with other leading provinces in Canada and the USA. A: I currently work for our province s utility in the area of demand-side management (aka Power Smart). I am the project coordinator for the New Buildings Program, which aims to get MB new construction projects to build to energy efficiency standards above the Manitoba Energy Code for Buildings. The program has over 170 participants, with more joining every day. We have aligned our program with the LEED NC rating system in terms of commissioning requirements and energy modeling requirements. I am involved with a large number of projects in MB and have contact with owners and project teams. I am currently a member of the interim Chapter leadership board and have been assisting the re-launch of the chapter here in Manitoba. My previous role was a Sustainability Project Manager (LEED Coordinator) in a local architecture firm. A: As mentioned above, I have the pleasure of seeing a large number of projects in the province, all with different project teams and owners. I also sit on the Construction Specifications Canada Winnipeg chapter Board. This position has given me experience working with a volunteer board and also strategic planning and monthly event planning. This association has a wide range of members from varying aspects of the construction industry, which will be a benefit for Cross-promotion of our events and education. I am a strong believer in continuing education, so I attend relevant education 4

courses whenever I can (most recently one on Passive house). I am also approved CaGBC faculty for Manitoba and will be teaching my second course this week. This also gives me great insight into what is needed in our community. Q: What do you believe the priorities should be for the green building industry in Manitoba over the A: I think with the re-launch of the chapter, we have a great opportunity to solidify our mission and alignment with the CaGBC and the products they promote. I see community-building and education as the two main priorities for us in the near future, as we re-establish membership. In my opinion, some industry specific education and outreach is required to bring some new faces to the chapter and green building industry. For example, reaching out to contractors specifically and to the MB Home Builders Association. Many of these people right now feel that content isn t always relevant to them and I think it s important to highlight was a large role they play in moving the industry forward here in MB. 5

Liane Wychreschuk Architect, Prairie Architects Inc. Credentials: Bachelor of Environmental Design, Master of Architecture, LEED AP BD+C Liane is an architect and has been working in the profession since During this time, she has had the opportunity to engage in a variety of public projects that include schools, child care, and community centres. While Liane was born and raised in Manitoba, she has travelled a great deal for university and pleasure. Her travels have exposed her to new cultures and activities that have helped inform her understanding of design and the need for community- driven architecture. Liane enjoys working on multiple projects + being involved in the many stages of design and construction as it provides opportunity to build smartly and more efficiently for the end user. Q: Why Do You Wish to Serve on the Chapter Leadership Board of the Manitoba Chapter? A: As a passionate advocate for green building, I have spent the last 10 years getting experience and exposure to a number of LEED certified projects of many levels. Being able to talk to owners, clients, contractors and engineers about the importance of 3rd party certification and how that translates into the work being able to fit the original environmental goals through design and construction is key. As the board is currently going through a transformation and consolidation with the national organization, it seemed like a fitting time to get involved and see if my expertise could be of use. With a point of view from the private professional design perspective, I think it s important to be able to address the concerns that happen often in private practice, while at the same time ensuring that we are keeping in line with the larger goals of addressing the key role of building green in the fight against climate change. A: I have been working as an architect in the local industry with a keen interest in improving building design for not only the environment, but ultimately the people. I think that the green building industry has to reach beyond its limits to engage with people outside of the construction industry, including schools and other environmental organizations. This can help lead to informed and passionate advocates outside of the traditional industry. My in-depth understanding of LEED as it applies to design & construction have helped me contribute to the people that eventually become the everyday occupants. The most gratifying projects have been schools where you can see students enjoy, understand and appreciate that the space in which they learn is also helping the planet in a real concrete way, whether that be with water re-use in the toilets, access to fully daylit spaces, etc. A: I currently belong to the MAA, Manitoba Women in Construction in addition to the CaGBC. I think that those organizations have a variety of interests and the diversity that bring together many different 6

types of events. The design of sustainable buildings is something that takes passion and participation from suppliers, contractors and designers. Also, I have found that attending CSC events and seeing how the discussion affects those from a very different viewpoint makes me appreciate the limits of the programs and how it can be improved. Learning about up and coming technologies and shifts in the industry is key to bringing all of these networks together. the well building standard is intriguing in that it connects to the health and wellness industries in a useful way, and I am excited to see it progress over time as it becomes part of the conversation surrounding building design & operations. Q: What do you believe the priorities should be for the green building industry in Manitoba over the A: I think that the industry needs to see a shift and understanding that LEED is now more than ever a tool to produce better buildings, and that certification should not be perceived as a barrier to owners. The Manitoba energy code being in effect has brought the language of many of these items into the forefront. Energy modelling is expanding and becoming even more important during building design. Integrating professionals including consulting engineers into one room to discover common goals during design can be the easiest way to eliminate the past confusion. The Manitoba green building policy is doing a good job in terms of privately funded projects, but are there other methods/incentives that can be seen as advantageous to those projects that are privately funded? Manitoba hydro has been making progress with its multiple power smart programs, but are there other avenues? I think having good relationships with other lifestyle environmental initiatives is a way to bring the whole picture together; this could be opening up the discussion with active transportation advocates, local market and CSA food and waste diversion initiatives, etc. The goals are similar and it only strengthens all to connect those working towards them together. 7

Between 2005 and 2012 I served on the board in different director capacities including the chair position from I want to serve on the chapter leadership board to help re-establish a strong and vibrant chapter in Manitoba. It is important to have a strong local representation of the CaGBC here in Manitoba to be able to improve the building industry locally and as Manitoba to have a voice nationally to 2012.I served on the CaGBC national board from 2010 to 2012 as the chapter representative. I have been involved in/designed over 50 LEED and LEED for Homes projects. A: As a principal in a successful medium sized architectural firm in Winnipeg and having projects across the prairies and in the far North, I have had the opportunity to work with a wide variety of industry stakeholders, such as engineers and consultants, contractors, all levels of government as well as developers and not for profit clients. In addition we have been working together with Red River College and University of Manitoba on performance research of past projects and products. Q: What do you believe the priorities should be for the green building industry in Manitoba over the 10

A: I believe that the first priority for the Chapter is to re-establish relations with industry stakeholders and industry partners. The Chapter will need to serve the industry stakeholders through education and networking opportunities and by providing leadership in advocating change in building and operating of buildings. 11

Nick Bockstael Manager of Operations, Bockstael Construction Credentials: Diploma in Structural Engineering Technology, Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) Nick is a Professional Engineer and he joined Bockstael Construction Limited in January Prior to joining Bockstael, Nick spent five years in the engineering and construction industry with expertise in project management, planning, design, implementation, testing, and inspection services. Nick was a consulting engineer and, prior to that, gained experience as a seasonal construction worker providing fieldwork, estimation, and project coordination services. His engineering and construction background gives him a unique insight into his work, and provides him with a special understanding of projects. Q: Why Do You Wish to Serve on the Chapter Leadership Board of the Manitoba Chapter? A: I wish to serve on the board to further the interests of sustainability in the construction industry. Through training and implementation of lean construction practices it is clear that the culture of the industry needs to change to eliminate waste in the entire supply chain. CaGBC has influenced the culture of the industry and i believe that it can continue to take steps in integrating the industry to eliminate waste. A: I have worked on several green and LEED projects. Bockstael employs a full time sustainability coordinator that attends events and presents sustainability topics to our staff. A: I am currently the chair of the Young Construction Leaders of Manitoba and an active member in LCI-C, WCA, CCA. As the chair of YCLM i set the agenda of events for the year. I see a variety of trends and opportunities in the industry, particularly in integrated project delivery and lean that can integrate into the Chapter s Mission. Q: What do you believe the priorities should be for the green building industry in Manitoba over the A: The priorities should be on eliminating waste in the entire supply chain including design. I would address this issue through a focus on integrated project delivery and education on how uninformed decisions effect waste and in turn the sustainability of the industry and environment. 12

Rob Spewak Technology Centre Manager, Red River College Credentials: B.Sc. Agricultural Engineering, M.Sc. Agricultural & Bioresource Engineering Rob Spewak is the Centre Manager for the Building Envelope Technology Access Centre at Red River College. Rob has an M.Sc. degree in Agricultural & Bioresource Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan, and prior to this completed his B.Sc. degree in Agricultural Engineering at the University of Manitoba. He has worked in the agricultural implement industry, agricultural engineering consulting, as well as several years in the technical sales field. Rob joined Red River College s Applied Research & Commercialization Department as Research Manager in 2007, upon completion of a Technology Commercialization Internship with the Westlink Innovation Network. Rob s work at RRC has focused on building construction research, and he helped author a successful Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) grant in 2009 for $2.3 Million. Rob is continuing his work in this area with the establishment of the new Technology Access Centre, which is another funding program available through NSERC and available for renewal every five years. Rob enjoys joining in on the field work where possible, especially the large building airtightness testing days; he also has completed his Level 1 thermography training. Q: Why Do You Wish to Serve on the Chapter Leadership Board of the Manitoba Chapter? A: I have been involved in building construction research for 7 years now, and am quite passionate about the impact our built environment has on our world. In our climate, we spend a lot of time in our buildings. How they perform with respect to their full life cycle costs is very important. With my role as a Centre Manager in the area of building constructions, I think it would be beneficial to be on the Board and contribute with my knowledge in my specific area, as well as network with other board members in discussions about how we can all advance our local building industry. A: I am currently managing a new Centre to support the building construction industry specifically in the area of building envelopes. The Centre, the Building Envelope Technology Access Centre (BETAC), provides a suite of services directed at improving the performance (durability and energy performance) of building envelopes in Manitoba s climate. Prior to the establishment of the Centre, I managed a $2.3million funding grant from natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, titled Improving the energy performance of buildings. Between 2009 and 2014, over 40 projects were conducted with over 60 industry partners; the projects ranged from the use of renewable energy in buildings, recycled materials in building materials and building envelope testing and monitoring. 13

A: With the focus on building envelopes at BETAC, we are continually working on the cutting edge of the building industry and keeping abreast of new standards, codes, trends, and innovative materials that are being used or developed for the building industry. We are in contact with not only the local industry players, but also across Canada and North America. Much of this knowledge can help inform and benefit the Chapter s mission. Q: What do you believe the priorities should be for the green building industry in Manitoba over the A: I am biased towards building envelopes as this is my area of focus, but further to that I believe much more attention needs to be directed toward demand side energy initiatives and lowering the energy usage of buildings. Also, the word green tends to be a lightning rod of discussion and intense scrutiny with many references to greenwashing. I think some efforts could be directed as to what really is green just because a material is made with recycled materials for instance does not necessarily make it green ; how it performs over its life span should be looked at in a comprehensive manner. For instance, a recycled insulation material may not be using virgin material, lowering its embodied energy, however it may not perform as well as other materials which may increase heating/cooling costs. 14
