The actual MOQ for a custom order will be clarified by or in the formal quotation. Minimum order quantities are applicable since our factory is faced with minimum quantities of electrical components from the component manufacturers, the costs of packaging customised LED chips, machinery setup and tooling costs. If smaller quantities than the stipulated MOQ are required, there will be a significant cost penalty. The turn-around time for orders with customised components may exceed 4 weeks, in order to source the epi-wafer chip, mix the correct phosphor colour compound mix, and package it.

4 Colour Rendering Index Choosing the right colour rendering index for your lighting application can be the difference between a successful installation or a dismal failure. The higher the CRI the more pure the colour representation of objects lit by the lighting source, compared to how the objects colour would be in natural sunlight. A high CRI is usually required in applications where colours are important, such as in a jewelry store, in a graphics studio, or in a retail store where the colour of items on display is important. As a rule of thumb, as the CRI increases the brightness of the LED decreases. If you require extreme levels of brightness as well as a very high CRI you should opt for high CRI LED chips with an increased number of LED chips. Whilst not impossible, it is difficult to source LED chips with a CRI above 90. LED chips with higher CRI values are more expensive than those with lower CRI values. Below is a good visual representation on how a white LED light with different CRI values would make an object appear.

Lifespan. Heat is the enemy of an LED chip, and as such a good heat sink is essential in achieving a good lifespan. Light quality.

The cheaper (usually mainland China) LED chips will often use a cheaper phosphor mixture. Light consistency.

Consistency is required in terms of colour & brightness, not only immediately after production but also over time.

5 LED Chipset Considerations Despite the plethora of LED chip brands available, they differ in performance and price. Brightness. Measured in lumen. The better quality LED chips will maintain their brightness for longer. Efficiency. Measured in lumen per Watt. Only the better quality (i.e. more expensive) LED chips can achieve an efficiency over 100 lumen per Watt. Lifespan. Heat is the enemy of an LED chip, and as such a good heat sink is essential in achieving a good lifespan. Light quality. The quality of the light produced is determined by the quality of the phosphor used in the LED chip packaging process. The cheaper (usually mainland China) LED chips will often use a cheaper phosphor mixture. Light consistency. It is imperative in a flexible strip that each chip produce a consistent light across the strip, and often, across a batch of strips. Consistency is required in terms of colour & brightness, not only immediately after production but also over time. LUMUL only ever use LED chips from the most reputable chip and epi-wafer manufacturers. Our preference is for Epistar chips due to their excellent quality and performance and affordable pricing. Epistar is based in Taiwan has a patent sharing agreement with Cree, the leading American LED chip manufacturer. As a testament to their quality, Epistar chips are used for backlighting in Samsung LED TVs. Our chip packaging partner use top quality phosphor mixes by one of the leading Chinese Universities and gold wire in the LED chip connection. Choosing the appropriate chip package is also important, as it influences the brightness, efficiency and heat dissipation of the LED.
