5 The Land Conservancy of New Jersey Preserve Now - Protect Forever Who We Are Founded in 1981, The Land Conservancy of New Jersey is a member supported non-profit land trust dedicated to preserving and protecting our vital natural lands and water resources. We are working to inspire and empower individuals and communities to take action to preserve land and protect the environment in New Jersey. The Conservancy has preserved more than 18,000 acres of land and helped towns secure $220 million in county, state, and federal grants for their land conservation projects. We have worked in 78 municipalities in 13 counties benefiting millions of people who live, work, or visit our state. Saving the Best of New Jersey Every dollar counts! With New Jersey s valuable natural lands disappearing at an alarming pace and open space funding shrinking, the work of The Land Conservancy of New Jersey is more important than ever. We take our responsibility seriously - we are forging new partnerships, leveraging scarce funding resources, and making wise use of every dollar available to us. We are providing creative solutions to concerned individuals, landowners, communities, businesses, and government entities who are committed to take action now to preserve New Jersey s land and drinking water resources, protect wildlife, and care for our parkland, farmland and open spaces. By working together, we are making New Jersey a better place to live, work, and raise a family - providing healthy, livable, sustainable communities. Contact us today to see how you can help! Accredited by the national Land Trust Accreditation Commission in 2009, The Land Conservancy of New Jersey joins 135 organizations nationwide recognized for meeting the highest quality standards for protecting open space, upholding the public trust, and ensuring that our conservation efforts are permanent. Conservancy Programs our dollars at work Land Preservation Preserving land is at the heart of our work ensuring: A plentiful supply of safe, clean drinking water Productive land for agriculture Sustainable land for wildlife and forests to thrive Neighborhood parks and natural areas for people to walk, play and enjoy a healthy lifestyle Partners for Greener Communities This unique program fosters sustainable communities, providing technical expertise in open space planning, flood mitigation, and land preservation to municipalities and counties throughout the state. From planning and mapping, to advising and negotiating, to putting land deals together and leveraging scarce funding resources, the Conservancy provides the tools and critical resources to help bring land projects to a successful conclusion. Partners for Parks Through our award-winning stewardship program, we put teams of volunteers from corporations and civic groups to work on community service projects in the parks. Since 1996, more than 7,500 volunteers have participated in the program. The Scholarship Program The Conservancy awards two annual scholarships, the Russell W. Myers Scholarship and The Rogers Family Scholarship to New Jersey college students pursuing careers in environmental preservation. Since 1984 we have awarded more than $154,000 in scholarships. 19 Boonton Avenue Boonton, NJ Fax

6 ite Proje T h ets he Stouth B ranch R estoration r a t i o n S P roject c t o t s e ou R h c h Bran Every once in a while preserving a property can become the catalyst for great change. Such was the case when on June 9, 2010 The Land Conservancy of New Jersey partnered with The Trust for Public Land, Mount Olive Township, Morris County, and the State of New Jersey to purchase the 135-acre Rezamir Estates property. Preserving this site was critical because it lies within the headwaters of the South Branch of the Raritan River, a drinking water source for more than 1 million New Jersey residents. Immediately upon closing, the property was transferred to The Land Conservancy which agreed to own, restore, and manage the land as a watershed resource to be known as the South Branch Preserve Restoration Project. When The Land Conservancy of New Jersey took possession of the property that day it didn t look like any other land we had preserved. A blighted landscape was all that was left of a once beautiful site. The former owner had subdivided the property to construct 16 single-family homes and built more than a mile of gravel roads, channelized streams with seven concrete culverts, constructed two large detention basins and a home foundation, while stockpiling massive piles of construction debris, boulders, and soil throughout the property. The result was the destruction of wetlands, the diversion and siltation of streams, the fragmentation of a healthy mature interior forest, and the disruption of the property s hydrology. Not to be deterred, The Conservancy had a vision for what was possible for this site. We began restoring the land to its natural state completing the first restoration of a residential subdivision ever accomplished in New Jersey! As a result, the springs and streams on the property are once again flowing unimpeded, carrying clean drinking water downstream to residents and businesses. Detention basins have been filled in and 14 vernal pools have been created in their place - providing outstanding new wildlife habitat. When the site was altered for residential development, many plants and trees were destroyed. These have now been replanted on the site, helping to bring it even closer to its pre-development state. In total, hundreds of pounds of native grasses and over 300 trees and 700 shrubs were planted throughout the South Branch Preserve Restoration Site. A fence now surrounds 100 acres of the property keeping the deer out and making it possible for native plants to begin to grow once again in the forest. Given some time to grow, protected from deer, our hope is that the forest will be on the rebound within five to ten years! What does the future hold for South Branch Preserve? We view this as a remarkable opportunity to demonstrate to the public that a high profile property such as Rezamir Estates, thought lost to development, can be restored and managed as a functioning part of the natural ecosystem. While the physical restoration of this site may be complete, ongoing monitoring of the property is critical to ensure that it continues to thrive. The Land Conservancy of New Jersey is working to add more preserved land to the South Branch Preserve. Our Board of Trustees envisions the South Branch Preserve will one day encompass 1,000 acres including a mile and a half of the South Branch of the Raritan River, protecting one of New Jersey s critical drinking water sources.
