2 Graduation Plan: All tracks Submit your Graduation Plan to the Board of Examiners (Examencommissie- Mentors and Delegate of the Board of Examiners one week before P2 at the latest. The graduation plan consists of at least the following data/segments: Personal information Name Jorik van den Bos Student number Telephone number Private address Name / Theme Teachers / tutors Argumentation of choice of the studio Graduation project Title of the graduation project Heritage and Alexander de Ridder, Nicholas Clarke, Bas Gremmen I believe that the low population growth in Europe will put more emphasis on improving the quality of the existing built environment rather than adding new environments. More personally, in Heritage and I can put my personal passion for history and old buildings to good use. Not just a brick in the wall Goal Location: The posed problem, Nieuwstad, Zutphen The relation between old and new has always been a delicate matter, especially in cities with multiple layers of history. The 1992 St. Elisabeth assisted living complex has diminished the urban qualities that are characteristic for this historical part of Zutphen. It also outright replaced a caretaking complex that grew over the course of the 19 th and 20 th century. The complex spans over 2 formerly closed building blocks and forms a barrier to viewing and understanding the relation of Nieuwstad with the medieval city wall, as well as the Berkelpoort and the St. Elisabeth chapel two landmarks from different time periods. On a functional level there is a challenge to improve the assisted living program in its own right, but in relation with the urban qualities. research questions and - Which spatial interventions can be done in the St. Elisabeth residence and its surrounding buildings to
3 design assignment in which these result. improve both the accessibility and the historical readability of Nieuwstad, while improving its present function and qualities? - What is the ideal concept for assisted living, considering the urban and demographic context of Nieuwstad? - How can public, semi-public and private space be rearranged to improve the accessibility of the historical landmarks? - Design new spaces between the wings of the St. Elisabeth residence, to improve the relation of the inner city of Nieuwstad and the historical landmarks. - Design public spaces around the St. Elisabeth residence that are attractive for visitors and residents. - Design dwellings and hallways to improve the wellbeing of the St. Elisabeth s residents. Process Method description To help understand what creates a relation between contemporary cities and their historical walls, case studies will be done for places that are similar to Nieuwstad. To improve the assisted living, a literature review will be done to find out how to make this living concept suitable for future trends and generations. Some additional information from the local situation might be necessary, such as interviews or municipal data. The insights from these studies will have to be translated in the context of Nieuwstad, using design as a research tool. This implies making variations of specific interventions, to see what is possible from a spatial point of view. This has to be done on both an urban scale (volumes, public spaces) and an architectural scale (interior spaces). Priorly, extensive research and value assessment has been done on the urban and architectural context of Nieuwstad and the St. Elisabeth. For the analysis, the 7 Shearing layers as described by Stewart Brand has been used. The layers describe a building in layers from the large to the small, and the lifecycles of each layer. To come to a detailed and structured assessment of the values, the value matrix has been used as a basis. This matrix also adapts the 7 Shearing layers, but puts them against different types of values (historical, age, artistic, etc.). The conclusions from these analyses serve as the guiding principles in considering future design interventions.

Reflection Relevance The aim of this project is to improve the urban and architectural qualities of a multifunctional residential area from the perspective of both its historical significance and current-day social needs. This fits into a broader and contemporary understanding of the term sustainability in which the social aspect is an integral part. Furthermore, the project covers the issue of elderly housing which will undergo continuing changes in the European context due to demographic pressure and a new outlook on aging.
